Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Zealand and the War The measures which were prepared by the General Conference for organizing a system of government for the Church in New Zealand have been completed; and though based only on the principle of voluntary compact, they promise to be productive of useful results. If the subject of organizing a constitutional government for the Church of England shall ever become a question of practical importance, something may be learned from the New Zealand experiment. It must be interesting indeed, under any circumstances, to witness the difficulties which churchmen have to em counter when thrown upon their own resources in a new country, without law or organization, with out endowments, and beyond the jurisdiction of the ecclesiastical tribunals of the mother country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Zealand, Vol. 1 At one time it was hoped that several persons of great ability and high character, who had amassed much recorded information and had lived long in New Zealand, would combine the results and give them to the world. But that hope has vanished. I learned from one of them, who went to New Zealand in 1839, and lives there now, that on the occasion of a visit to Europe he abandoned the idea of publication, and destroyed his manuscripts. The failure of that project, and encouragement from those concerned in it, embolden me to present the following narrative compiled with a diligent endeavour to test every statement by reference to the most authentic sources of information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Zealand at Home Here was a situation in which diplomacy, tact, and self-reliance were required, together with good sense, self control, and the greatness of mind which acknowledging mistakes is ready to atone for them. In some settle ments these were found in others they were not; and it happened sometimes that war came in spite of everything, and settlers were left in the open exposed to violence. Of these, some stood their ground, but most came in to the towns, and for a time there was a life of blockhouses and militia training. The peaceful citizen, placing wife and bairns in safety, patrolled round about. Regiments were locally raised, volunteers came to the front, and there was a stirring time, with death on the battlefield and tough fighting in the deadly ambuscade. All these events were eagerly watched from all Sides; public opinion everywhere ceased to be parochial; and the national character was hardened in the fire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Zealand War: The Second Year of One of England's Little Wars The silence of the local press as to the real merits of the Taranaki war induced me to send home to England in May, 1860, a few remarks on that subject, which were published the form of a letter to His Grace the Duke of Newcastle, the Secretary of State for the Colonies. The letter on its return was reprinted by the local press, and became widely circulated through the Colony. Nobody here has been rash enough to attempt a refutation of a single statement contained in it. But what nobody has ventured to do here, Professor Harold Browne has not shrunk from doing in England. A little knowledge will sometimes deter from rashness, when absolute ignorance only tends to engender boldness. As Mr. Fox's pamphlet, The War in New Zealand, published in London, and Sir William Martin's Taranaki Question, have confirmed every statement of importance contained in my letter, besides establishing in the clearest way the illegality of the Governor's proceedings at Taranaki, it will be necessary that some only of the numerous misstatements occurring in Prof. Browne's pamphlet should be noticed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Zealand Wars, Vol. 1: A History of the Maori Campaigns and the Pioneering Period; 1845-1864 HE increasing interest in the study of New Zealand's past emphasizes the need for a history of the wars with the Maoris since the establishment of British sovereignty and of the era of pioneering settlement and adventure, which was prao tically conterminous with those campaigns. Although there is in existence a considerable body of war-time literature written by participants in the conflicts, it is not possible to gather in any of the works on the subject a connected account of the successive outbreaks and campaigns which troubled the colony from 1845 to the beginning of 1872. Most of the printed narratives deal chiefly with events which came within the soldier-writers' own experi ence, and'other contributions to the story of the campaigns are scarcely written in the impartial spirit of the historian. Some of the earlier works, and even the blue-books, contain many state ments which careful inquiries and a better understanding of the Maori side of the struggle have now demolished. Most of the useful books, moreover, are out of print, and the student who Wishes to make a complete. Survey of the field of contact between pukeha and Maori is compelled to work through many volumes, pamphlets, and newspaper-hles in the public libraries. The fragmentary and scattered nature of our war-time literature therefore necessitates this endeavour to provide a standard history in convenient compass. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Shadow of the Bush: A New Zealand Romance Some, indeed, of these so-called townships never reach any further stage than the initial one in which they appeared on paper, in all the glories of the sale plans, with streets of high-sounding titles, and terraces and squares; never, it is to be feared, to resound to that busy roar of traffic which the promoters, or at least the unfortunate individuals who were induced to buy sections there, may have looked forward to. A few there are that from superiority of position, and through fulfilling the wants of advancing settlement over a large surrounding district, make rapid progress and soon outstrip their less fortunate rivals.
