Remedy In justice to the designers it might be noted in passing, that, at that time, subways were somewhat of a novelty and this one being the first in New York, it might have been assumed that the conditions were so peculiar that results would Obtain here which did not Obtain in sub ways Oi London, Paris and Boston. On the other hand it is quite as evident that engineers, expert in ventilating, were not called into con saltation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Air and Ventilation of Subways This volume is the outcome of studies carried on for two and one-half years for the Board of Rapid Transit Railroad Commissioners for the City of New York and, after that board went out of existence, for the Interborough Rapid Transit Company to whom the first New York subway is leased. The work was begun in the summer of 1905 and concluded in 1907. The original data covering about 2000 pages have never been published, although reports summarizing many of the facts have appeared in the official transactions of the Rapid Transit Commissioners or been read by the author before the Society of Arts of Boston, the New York Academy Of Medicine or elsewhere. At the conclusion of the investigations it seemed desir able to have some of these reports bound together for private circulation, but it was finally decided to put the work into somewhat more extended form and offer it to the general public. Download or read book Subnature written by David Gissen and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are conditioned over time to regard environmental forces such as dust, mud, gas, smoke, debris, weeds, and insects as inimical to architecture. Much of today's discussion about sustainable and green design revolves around efforts to clean or filter out these primitive elements. While mostly the direct result of human habitation, these 'subnatural forces' are nothing new. In fact, our ability to manage these forces has long defined the limits of civilized life. From its origins, architecture has been engaged in both fighting and embracing these so-called destructive forces. In Subnature, David Gissen, author of our critically acclaimed Big and Green, examines experimental work by today's leading designers, scholars, philosophers, and biologists that rejects the idea that humans can somehow recreate a purely natural world, free of the untidy elements that actually constitute nature. Each chapter provides an examination of a particular form of subnature and its actualization in contemporary design practice. The exhilarating and at times unsettling work featured in Subnature suggests an alternative view of natural processes and ecosystems and their relationships to human society and architecture. R&Sie(n)'s Mosquito Bottleneck house in Trinidad uses a skin that actually attracts mosquitoes and moves them through the building, while keeping them separate from the occupants. In his building designs the architect Philippe Rahm draws the dank air from the earth and the gasses and moisture from our breath to define new forms of spatial experience. In his Underground House, Mollier House, and Omnisport Hall, Rahm forces us to consider the odor of soil and the emissions from our body as the natural context of a future architecture. [Cero 9]'s design for the Magic Mountain captures excess heat emitted from a power generator in Ames, Iowa, to fuel a rose garden that embellishes the industrial site and creates a natural mountain rising above the city's skyline. Subnature looks beyond LEED ratings, green roofs, and solar panels toward a progressive architecture based on a radical new conception of nature.

Download or read book Subway written by John E. Morris and published by Black Dog & Leventhal. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dynamic visual history of the world's largest transit system -- in all its intriguing, colorful, and even seedy glory -- is packed with fascinating facts and hundreds of compelling photographs. When the first New York subway line opened in 1904, it was the most advanced in the world and a source of enormous civic pride. Today, it is an essential function to the lives of New Yorkers and a perennial cultural touchstone. To be a New Yorker is to take the train. To celebrate it, or grumble about it. Subway: The History, Curiosities, and Secrets of the New York City Transit System by John E. Morris is both a vivid history of this great transportation system and an exploration of its impact on the city and popular culture. The book covers every remarkable moment, from the technical obstacles and corruption that impeded plans for an underground rail line in the 1800s, to the current state of the system and plans for the future; profiles of the colorful, forgotten characters who built and restored the subway; graphics and imagery showing the evolution of subway cars and the way fares are collected; how subway etiquette rules have evolved with society; great subway chase scenes and songs about the subway; a look at abandoned stations and half-built tunnels; and more. In this visually stunning work, packed with original research, journalist and bestselling author John Morris brings life to this one-time engineering marvel that has united and expanded the city for the last 116 years.
