Book excerpt: This Visual Impact Study, hereafter referred as the "study," supports the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's (NYSERDA) New York State Great Lakes Wind Energy Feasibility Study. First, the study describes the standard procedure for conducting a visual impact assessment and how viewshed analyses would be used to help define the geographic extents of such assessments in the Great Lakes. Second, the study describes the significant factors that affect viewshed calculations and limitations, and what it means for assessments of visual impact for wind energy in the Great Lakes. Third, the study presents high-level viewshed analyses for select hypothetical turbine locations to provide a general sense of theoretical visibility in the region.

Book excerpt: Wind energy has many environmental advantages over other conventional methods of energy production. Despite these benefits, placement of large turbines across the landscape (or potentially in the water) can have negative ecological impacts. Some of these impacts are fairly well understood they have been well studied or are known from past experience or research on similar practices.

Book Synopsis Environmental Impacts of Wind-Energy Projects by : National Research Council
Download or read book Environmental Impacts of Wind-Energy Projects written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-09-27 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation of electricity by wind energy has the potential to reduce environmental impacts caused by the use of fossil fuels. Although the use of wind energy to generate electricity is increasing rapidly in the United States, government guidance to help communities and developers evaluate and plan proposed wind-energy projects is lacking. Environmental Impacts of Wind-Energy Projects offers an analysis of the environmental benefits and drawbacks of wind energy, along with an evaluation guide to aid decision-making about projects. It includes a case study of the mid-Atlantic highlands, a mountainous area that spans parts of West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. This book will inform policy makers at the federal, state, and local levels.
