Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the New York Library Club The present Manual Of'the New York Library Club represents much thought and many efforts on the part of the last two administrations. The preceding Manual had been issued as a supplement to the Bulletin in March, 1913. Union with the Long Island Library Club in. 1914 necessitated a new record, and the present issue must be credited to the first President of the enlarged club, Mr. Frederick W. Jenkins, his successor, Dr. Frank P. Hill, Miss F rick, the Secretary, and the committees that worked with them. For their interest and devotion to the cause the thanks Of the Club are due. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Private Libraries of New York The separate articles have all undergone a careful revision, while many have been en tirely rewritten, and a few new ones added. As it now stands, the work may be consid ered as giving a tolerablv fair account of most of the private collections in New York, and will be a sufficient guide to the student as to the sources from which he may hope to derive information, not to be found in the public libraries. This has been a prominent object in the preparation of these articles, and has operated in a no less degree with the collectors of the various libraries in frankly permitting an account of them to be given to the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valentine's Manual of Old New York, Vol. 3 Time passes so rapidly that in a few years subscribers to the Manual will be amazed at the amount of valuable material concerning New York which will be in their possession. NO single volume can adequately show the extent of the work, but when a dozen issues have been completed we think our friends will be more than pleased with the result of the investment. Interest in New York is growing with every passing day, and after the War it will be even greater than ever before. The present management of the Manual does not look upon it as a private venture; it is more in the nature of a public enterprise. We sometimes regret the lack of sup port by our Municipal authorities, even in a modified de gree. On the other hand, we enjoy a measure of editorial freedom which must in the end tend to the advantage of the Manual, as it enables us to select such material as commends itself to our judgment with no Obligation from any quarter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time she reached her late twenties, Eudora Welty (1909–2001) was launching a distinguished literary career. She was also becoming a capable gardener under the tutelage of her mother, Chestina Welty, who designed their modest garden in Jackson, Mississippi. From the beginning, Eudora wove images of southern flora and gardens into her writing, yet few outside her personal circle knew that the images were drawn directly from her passionate connection to and abiding knowledge of her own garden. Near the end of her life, Welty still resided in her parents' house, but the garden—and the friends who remembered it—had all but vanished. When a local garden designer offered to help bring it back, Welty began remembering the flowers that had grown in what she called “my mother's garden.” By the time Welty died, that gardener, Susan Haltom, was leading a historic restoration. When Welty's private papers were released several years after her death, they confirmed that the writer had sought both inspiration and a creative outlet there. This book contains many previously unpublished writings, including literary passages and excerpts from Welty's private correspondence about the garden. The authors of One Writer's Garden also draw connections between Welty's gardening and her writing. They show how the garden echoed the prevailing style of Welty's mother's generation, which in turn mirrored wider trends in American life: Progressive-era optimism, a rising middle class, prosperity, new technology, women's clubs, garden clubs, streetcar suburbs, civic beautification, conservation, plant introductions, and garden writing. The authors illustrate this garden's history—and the broader story of how American gardens evolved in the early twentieth century—with images from contemporary garden literature, seed catalogs, and advertisements, as well as unique historic photographs. Noted landscape photographer Langdon Clay captures the restored garden through the seasons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeply informed, yet playful and ironic look at how the internet has changed human experience, memory, and our sense of self, and that belongs on the shelf with the best writings of Roland Barthes and Jean Baudrillard. “One day, as I was daydreaming on the boulevard Beaumarchais, I had the idea—it came and went in a flash, almost in spite of myself—of Googling to find out what I’d been up to and where I’d been two evenings before, at five o’clock, since I couldn’t remember on my own.” So begins Maël Renouard’s Fragments of an Infinite Memory, a provocative and elegant inquiry into life in a wireless world. Renouard is old enough to remember life before the internet but young enough to have fully accommodated his life to the internet and the gadgets that support it. Here this young philosopher, novelist, and translator tries out a series of conjectures on how human experience, especially the sense of self, is being changed by our continual engagement with a memory that is impersonal and effectively boundless. Renouard has written a book that is rigorously impressionistic, deeply informed historically and culturally, but is also playful, ironic, personal, and formally adventurous, a book that withstands comparison to the best of Roland Barthes and Jean Baudrillard.
