Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Theology, Vol. 1 In studying his sources the student must guard against the temptation to infer that the doctrines he finds were universally, or even generally accepted. He must satisfy himself as to the probable extent the book he is investigating circulated among the Jews, for there is always the possibility that the literature studied may be the expression of individual opinion only, or at most, of the school of thought to which its author belonged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Theology, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Historical Account of the Teaching of Jesus and of Primitive Christianity According to the New Testament Sources The following work, which has now the honour of being translated into English, and which contains the main pro duct of many years of theological occupation with the New Testament, has met with a more favourable reception in Germany than I could have expected. Not that my anti cipations that it would displease the extreme parties on right and left have been falsified; for even the moderate party now dominant in Germany, whilst regarding it with more respect, has treated it as alien to itself. All the more encouraging is that practical criticism, which consists in the eager purchase, diligent reading, and warm praise of a book by susceptible readers. This experience pleases me the more that I View New Testament theology as the source destined to rejuvenate our traditional Church and doctrinal systems, concerning the insufficiency of which our age, with all its other differences, is pretty unanimous. There are undoubtedly needs and feelings in England like our own, though, perhaps, the power of orthodox scholasticism may not be so great, and the inclina tion to abandon tradition and go back to the Holy Scriptures much stronger; and therefore I hail it as a new sign of the spiritual fellowship of German and English Protestantism, that my effort to promote a deeper and freer conception of the New Testament religion has met with sympathy on the other Side of the Channel, and is to gain a wider Sphere of influence through a careful and intelligent translation. Biblical theology, as a science still in its infancy, is liable to more uncertainty as to what exactly are its idea and the limits of its task than any other branch of theological science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Theology IT has been our endeavor to prepare a book which, on the one hand, shall be sufficiently free from scholastic formality to be fairly acceptable to the general reader, and, on the other hand, sufficiently compact in state ment, logical in arrangement, and fundamental in its treatment of the subject-matter, to be fitted for service as a text-book. The conviction that there is room for a treatise which seeks to exemplify these characteristics is our principal excuse for presenting the volume to the public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Hours, Vol. 1 This volume completes my study of St. Paul. I have striven to keep free from traditional conceptions of any kind, and to set the Apostle and his Epistles before my readers as. He and they would appear to his contem poraries. To transfer our modern developments of ecclesiastical affairs to his age, distorts his whole story and robs it of its most valuable lessons. In theology I have simply stood behind the Apostle, and given his words and arguments without the colour of any school. As to the amplifications introduced in the texts of the Epistles, to make them more easily understood by the ordinary reader, they are seldom my own, but almost always those of the highest critical authorities of our day. I admire the surgical skill of reviewers, and am greatly obliged by their kind estimate of the volume already published, but it may be well if I put them on their guard, lest when they think they are launching an arrow at me, they find they have transfixed one or other of the supreme living or recent masters of New Testament literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Bible, Vol. 1: Dealing With Its Language, Literature, and Contents, Including the Biblical Theology; A-Feasts Give heed to teaching.' Perhaps the Church of Christ has never given sufficient heed to teaching since the earliest and happiest days. In our own day the importance of teaching, or, as we sometimes call it, expository preaching, has been pressed home through causes that are various yet never accidental; and it is probable that in the near future more heed will be given by the Church to teaching than has ever been given before. As a contribution towards the furnishing of the Church for that great work, this dictionary OF the bible is published. It is a Dictionary of the Old and New Testaments, together with the Old Testament Apocrypha, according to the Authorized and Revised English Versions, and with constant reference to the original tongues. Every effort has been used to make the information it contains reasonably full, trustworthy, and accessible. As to fulness. In a Dictionary of the Bible one expects that the words occurring in the Bible, and which do not explain themselves, will receive some explanation. The present Dictionary more nearly meets that expectation than any Dictionary that has hitherto been published. Articles have been written on the names of all Persons and Places, on the Antiquities and Archaeology Of the Bible, on its Ethnology, Geology, and Natural History, on Biblical Theology and Ethic, and even on the Obsolete or archaic words occurring in the English Versions. The greater number of the articles are of small compass, for care has been exercised to exclude vague generalities as well as unaccepted idiosyncrasies but there are many articles which deal with important and difficult subjects, and extend to considerable length. Such, for example, and to mention only one, is the article in the first volume on the Chronology Of the New Testament. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament, Vol. 1 The Sermons of S. Augustine, besides their other excellencies, furnish a beautiful picture of perhaps the deepest and most powerful mind of the Western Church adapting itself to the little ones of Christ. In them, he who has furnished the mould for all the most thoughtful minds for fourteen hundred years, is seen forming with loving tenderness the babes in Christ. Very touching is the child-like simplicity, with which he gradually leads them through what to them were difficulties, watching all the while whether he made himself clear to them, keeping up their attention, pleased at their understanding, dreading their approbation, and leading them off from himself to some practical result. Very touching the tenderness with which he at times reproves, the allowance which he makes for human infirmities and for those in secular life, if they will not make their infirmities their boast, or in allowed duties and indulgences forget God. But his very simplicity precludes the necessity of any preface. His Sermons explain themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive exposition, a leading New Testament scholar explores the unfolding theological unity of the entire Bible from the vantage point of the New Testament. G. K. Beale, coeditor of the award-winning Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament, examines how the New Testament storyline relates to and develops the Old Testament storyline. Beale argues that every major concept of the New Testament is a development of a concept from the Old and is to be understood as a facet of the inauguration of the latter-day new creation and kingdom. Offering extensive interaction between the two testaments, this volume helps readers see the unifying conceptual threads of the Old Testament and how those threads are woven together in Christ. This major work will be valued by students of the New Testament and pastors alike.

Book excerpt: There are many books which set out the case for Islam or for Christianity and point out what they regard as defects in the other religion. This book does that, but it seeks to do so in the form of a workbook which groups of Christians or Muslims might use, and it is conducted in a spirit where truth is paramount but so too is kindness and civility. The two authors have become friends and hope that this can be detected in the exchanges. As the major doctrines of each religion are dealt with, we are conscious that these doctrines are important and need to be examined rigorously and charitably. We hope we have succeeded to some degree at least.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suffering comes in many forms and is an inevitable part of life. But how do we face it? It raises many deep questions about life and what we might find within ourselves. It leaves us confused, looking for something to hold on to. In the midst of suffering, we need comfort and reassurance. When the questions overwhelm us, where can we find answers? We need a point of reference, an anchor that holds us safely to shore. This book explores the complexities of our questions about suffering with the understanding and compassion of personal experience. It provides concrete and practical answers in a meaningful way that we can all relate to. If you want to help others respond to suffering in a way that glorifies God, this book is for you. Dr. Cozzi’s case study on the apostle Paul struck a powerful chord with me when he writes about the three triads of Paul’s suffering. In Christ, Paul “had found ample reason to rejoice” in spite of his suffering. I am recommending this book because it is saturated with a rock-solid biblical theology on suffering. Responding to Suffering by Dr. Luciano Cozzi will be on my list of endorsed readings for my students. —Jeff Christianson President, International Association of Biblical Counselors Founder, The BiblicalCounselingAcademy.com For anyone seeking a thoroughly biblically and truly hopeful word from a fellow traveler who knows adversity and sufferings, I could not recommend more highly Luciano Cozzi’s book, Responding to Suffering. Well informed, avoiding sentimentality and easy answers, Dr. Cozzi shares with us a comprehensive and Christ-centered perspective on our Lord God’s good purpose to compassionately lead us all through those deep valleys of sorrow and sufferings that confront us in this fallen world. —Gary Deddo, Ph.D. (University of Aberdeen) Professor of Theology, Grace Communion Seminary
