Korean” is a series of integrated Korean coursebooks created for foreign learners who have started studying Korean because they like Korean culture. The contents of these textbooks include the latest trends in Korean culture, and various activities are presented so that learners can master the 4 areas of language; speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The composition of the series is consistent from the beginner level to advanced, with speaking, listening, reading, and writing presented organically, and listening and reading presented separately by unit, organized to increase concentration of learning in each area. In particular, in the “Step Up!” section, which moves away from activities centered on simply answering questions, learners can develop their communication skills by expanding on what they learned through speaking and writing activities. The “Hi! Korean” series is comprised of 10 Student’s Books (4 beginner, 4 intermediate, and 2 advanced) and an additional “Grammar and Vocabulary Study Book,” as well as 10 Workbooks (4 beginner, 4 intermediate, and 2 advanced), which are sold separately. “Hi! Korean 3A Workbook" is a textbook that can be used together with the “Hi! Korean 3A Student’s Book” in class or for self-study. You can review content step by step, from replacement exercises to expanded practice, using the grammar you learn in the textbook. At the intermediate level, expanded practice exercises are provided to review vocabulary and expressions studied in the Student’s Book, with extended exercises also included in the areas of speaking, listening, and reading. Additionally, writing exercises are provided at the end of each unit so that you can practice for the writing section of the TOPIK exam by writing passages on given topics. ● Systematically improve all language functions. ● Learn the grammar and vocabulary you’ve studied in-depth by practicing the rich and diverse functions presented in the main textbooks and workbooks. ● Study Korean with convenience using the “Grammar and Vocabulary Study Book” and sound files available via QR codes 도서에 포함된 MP3(CD) 음원은 다락원 홈페이지(www.darakwon.co.kr)에서 무료 다운로드 가능합니다. “Hi! Book excerpt: The inspiring and timely story of Sonia Sotomayor, who rose up from a childhood of poverty and prejudice to become the first Latino to be nominated to the US Supreme Court. Before Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor took her seat in our nation's highest court, she was just a little girl in the South Bronx. Justice Sotomayor didn't have a lot growing up, but she had what she needed -- her mother's love, a will to learn, and her own determination. With bravery she became the person she wanted to be. With hard work she succeeded. With little sunlight and only a modest plot from which to grow, Justice Sotomayor bloomed for the whole world to see.

Book excerpt: Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor tells her own story for young readers for the very first time! As the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor has inspired young people around the world to reach for their dreams. But what inspired her? For young Sonia, the answer was books! They were her mirrors, her maps, her friends, and her teachers. They helped her to connect with her family in New York and in Puerto Rico, to deal with her diabetes diagnosis, to cope with her father's death, to uncover the secrets of the world, and to dream of a future for herself in which anything was possible. In Turning Pages, Justice Sotomayor shares that love of books with a new generation of readers, and inspires them to read and puzzle and dream for themselves. Accompanied by Lulu Delacre's vibrant art, this story of the Justice's life shows readers that the world is full of promise and possibility--all they need to do is turn the page. Praise for Turning Pages: * "A sincere and insightful autobiography that also demonstrates the power of the written word. A winning addition to libraries that serve young readers." --School Library Journal, starred review "A personal and appealing book made to inspire." --Booklist "A thoughtful introduction to both the power of reading and an inspiring role model." --Kirkus Reviews "This book would be great as a read-aloud for class discussions of the Supreme Court, or United States government, or of important people in public service. It would also be good for independent reading by students interested in biographies or political figures." --School Library Connection

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Korean historian Jie-Hyun Lim, raised under an anticommunist dictatorship, turned to Marxian thought to explain his country’s development, even as he came to struggle with its Eurocentrism. As a transnational scholar working in postcommunist Poland, Lim recognized striking similarities between Korean and Polish history and politics. One realization stood out: Both Korea and Poland—at once the “West” for Asia yet “Eastern” Europe—had been assigned the role of “East.” This book explores entangled Easts to reconsider global history from the margins. Examining the politics of history and memory, Lim reveals the affinities linking Eastern Europe and East Asia. He draws out commonalities in their experiences of modernity, in their transitions from dictatorship to democracy, and in the shaping of collective memory. Ranging across Poland, Germany, Israel, Japan, and Korea, Lim traces the global history of how notions of victimhood have become central to nationalism. He criticizes mass dictatorships of right and left in the Global Easts, considering Nazi jurist Carl Schmitt’s notion of sovereign dictatorship and the concept of decisionist democracy. Lim argues that nationalism is inherently transnational, critiquing how the nationalist imagination of the Global East has influenced countries across borders. Theoretically sophisticated and conceptually innovative, this book sheds new light on the transnational complexity of historical memory and imagination, the boundaries between democracy and mass dictatorship, and the fluidity of East and West.

Growing out of a continuous tradition of over 2,000 years, twentieth-century Korean literature, termed "modern Korean Literature" by Korean scholars, has been shaped by profound social and political transformations on the peninsula. Those decades of great suffering and change gave birth to poets and writers of broad vision and to works of literature that testify both to actual Korean experience within this history and to the Korean spirit of resistance and transcendence. It is this literature that offers the most concrete and abundant knowledge and intuition of the sensibilities and habits of thought and the moral values and aesthetic views that guided the lives of Koreans in the twentieth century.CONTENTS1900-1945: THE RISE OF MODERN LITERATURE: Two Moderns: Yi Kwangsu and Kim Tong-in Between Enlightenment and Art Elegies for a Lost Era: Kim Sowol and Han Yong-un Social Consciousness and the Rise of Realist Fiction Colonial Pastorals: Rural Sketches in Time of Oppression Modernization of Poetic Language and Imagination1945-1970: LIBERATION AND THE KOREAN WAR: Abundance Amid Privation: The Poetry of So Chongju Exploring Nature and Life: Yu Chihwan and Pak Mog-wol Tradition and Humanity: Kim Tongni and Hwang Sunwon Prose Poetry and Condensations of Poetic Language: Kim Su-yong and Kim Ch?unsu Currents in Fiction: Political Life and Existential Life1970-1990: LITERATURE IN AN INDUSTRIALIZING SOCIETY: The Shadows Cast by Industrialization Continuing Consequences of Korean Division The Expression of Social Concerns in Poetry Women?s Voices Explorations of Existence and Quests for New Language Expansions of Fictional Space ?The Era of Poetry? and Deconstructions of Language

Book excerpt: This book explores practical and theoretical approaches to translation in Korea from the 16th century onwards, examining a variety of translations done in Korea from a diachronic perspective. Offering a discussion of the methodology for translating the Xiaoxue (Lesser or Elementary Learning), a primary textbook for Confucianism in China and other East Asian countries, the book considers the problems involving Korean Bible translation in general and the Term Question in particular. It examines James Scarth Gale, an early Canadian Protestant missionary to Korea, as one of the language’s remarkable translators. The book additionally compares three English versions of the Korean Declaration of Independence of 1919, arguing that the significant differences between them are due both to the translators’ political vision for an independent Korea as well as to their careers and Weltanschauungen. The book concludes with a detailed analysis of Deborah Smith’s English translation of ‘The Vegetarian’ by Han Kang, which won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize for Fiction.
