Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Nonlinear Phenomena-in Physics and Biology was held at the Banff Centre, Banff, Alberta, Canada, from 17 - 29 August, 1980. The Institute was made possible through funding by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (who sup plied the major portion of the financial aid), the National Research and Engineering Council of Canada, and Simon Fraser University. The availability of the Banff Centre was made possible through the co sponsorship (with NATO) of the ASI by the Canadian Association of Physicists. 12 invited lecturers and 82 other participants attended the Institute. Except for two lectures on nonlinear waves by Norman Zabusky, which were omitted because it was felt that they already had been exhaustively treated in the available literature, this volume contains the entire text of the invited lectures. In addition, short reports on some of the contributed talks have also been included. The rationale for the ASI and this resulting volume was that many of the hardest problems and most interesting phenomena being studied by scientists today ar.e nonlinear in nature. The nonlinear models involved often span several different disciplines, °a simple example being the Volterra-type model in population dynamics which has its analogue in nonlinear optics and plasma physics (the 3-wave problem), in the discussion of the social behavior of animals, and in biological competition and selection at the molecular level.

Such systems are characterized by a close relationship between broken spatial and tempo ral symmetries. The main topics of interest included pattern formation in chemical systems, materials and convection, traveling waves in binary fluids and liquid crystals, defects and their role in the disorganisa tion of structures, spatio-temporal intermittency, instabilities and large-scale vortices in open flows, the mathematics of non-equilibrium systems, turbulence, and last but not least growth phenomena. Written contributions from participants have been grouped into chapters addressing these different areas. For additional clarity, the first chapter on pattern formation has been subdivided into sections. One of the main concerns was to focus on the unifying features between these diverse topics. The various scientific communities repre sented were encouraged to discuss and compare their approach so as to mutually benefit their respective fields. We hope that, to a large degree, these goals have been met and we thank all the participants for their efforts. The workshop was held in Cargese (Corsica, France) at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques from August 2nd to August 12th, 1988. Book excerpt: The nonlinear theory of oscillating systems brings new aspects into the study of variable stars. Beyond the comparison of linear periods and the estimate of stability, the appearance and disappearance of possible modes can be studied in detail. While nonlinearity in stellar pulsations is not a very complicated concept, it generally requires extensive and sometimes so phisticated numerical studies. Therefore, the development of appropriate computational tools is required for applications of nonlinear theory to real phenomena in variable stars. Taking trends in variable star studies into consideration, the International Astronomical Union organized a colloquium for the nonlinear phenomena of variable stars at Mito, Japan in 1992. The colloquium served to give an overview of the new frontiers of variable star studies and to encourage further development of this field. The colloquium covered the fundamental theory, interesting observational facts, and the numerical modeling. The publication of the proceedings was somewhat delayed since one of the editors, M. T., was overwhelmed by administrative work. We are sorry that the excellent reviews of Drs. H. :Mori, M. Sano, and K. Makishima cannot be found in the proceedings. We also miss the summary given by Dr. W. W. Dziembowski. Throughout the editing procedure Dr. Y. Tanaka of Ibaraki University kindly helped us. Because of the unfortunate delay of the publication~ the significance of several papers may be affected. Even so, we believe that the papers are useful to variable star researchers because of their scientific importance.

Book excerpt: This NATO Advanced Study Institute, held in Geilo between March 29th and April 9th 1981, was the sixth in a series devoted to the subject of phase transitions and instabilities. The present institute was intended to provide a forum for discussion of the importance of nonlinear phenomena associated with instabilities in systems as seemingly disparate as ferroelectrics and rotating buckets of oil. Ten years ago, at the first Geilo school, the report of a central peak in the fluctuation spectrum of SrTi0 close to its 3 106 K structural phase transition demonstrated that the simple soft-mode theory of such transitions was incomplete. The missing ingredient was the essential nonlinearity of the system. Parti cipants at this year's Geilo school heard assessments of a decade of experimental and theoretical effort which has been expended to elucidate the nature of this nonlinearity. The importance of order ed clusters and the walls which bound them was stressed in this con text. A specific type of wall, the soliton, was discussed by a number of speakers. New experimental results which purport to demonstrate the existence of solitons in a one-dimensional ferromagnet were presented. A detailed discussion was given of the role of solitons in transport phenomena in driven multistable systems, typified by a sine-Gordon chain.
