Book Synopsis The Reception of Classical German Literature in England, 1760-1860, Volume 10 by : John Boening
Download or read book The Reception of Classical German Literature in England, 1760-1860, Volume 10 written by John Boening and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensive scope of this collection means that this documentary record of the reception of German literature in England is a valuable scholarly resource. One of the most important features of British literary and intellectual history over the past 250 years is the influence of German literature. From the second half of the 18th Century, through the first decades of the 19th, German books and ideas attracted, then gained the attention of a nation. Despite the acknowledged importance of the influence on writers such as Coleridge and Carlyle the subject, though often alluded to, was rarely studied. This collection provides a guidebook through the masses of periodical and allows the English side of the Anglo-German literary relationship to be explored in detail. In order to make the collection useful to scholars with a wide range of interest, it has been divided into three parts: Part 1 is a chronological presentation of commentary on German literature in general. It also contains collective reviews of multiple German authors, notices of important anthologies and reactions to influential works about Germany and its culture. Part 2 collects reviews of 18th Century individual German authors and Part 3 is devoted to the English reception of Goethe and Schiller. Parts 2 & 3 contain cross-references to the collective reviews of Part 1. Containing over 200 British serials and articles and reviews from all the major English literary periodicals, the collection also includes a broad sampling of opinion from the more general magazines, including some popular religious publications.

Book Synopsis Romantic Periodicals and Print Culture by : Kim Wheatley
Download or read book Romantic Periodicals and Print Culture written by Kim Wheatley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-11-23 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on a revival of scholarly interest in the cultural effects of early 19th-century periodicals, the essays in this collection treat periodical writing as intrinsically worthy of attention not a mere backdrop to the emergence of British Romanticism but a site in which Romantic ideals were challenged, modified, and developed. Contributors to the volume discuss a range of different periodicals, from the elite Quarterly and Edinburgh Reviews, through William Cobbett's populist weekly newspaper Two-Penny Trash, to the miscellaneous monthly magazines typified by Blackwood's. While some contributors to the volume approach the phenomenon of Romanticism within periodical culture from a more materialist standpoint than others, several elaborate upon recent intersections between Romantic studies and gender studies.

Download or read book The Lost Manuscript of Frédéric Cailliaud written by Frédéric Cailliaud and published by Amer Univ in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The travel accounts of Frédéric Cailliaud were an important early contribution to the birth of Egyptology in the first half of the nineteenth century. But one of his major works was never published. For the first time here, his exquisite color plates are presented alongside a translation of his original French text. Arriving in Egypt in 1815, Cailliaud made copious notes on the flora and fauna, people and antiquities, and took a collection of over two thousand objects back to France. His beautifully rendered watercolors of scenes on ancient Egyptian tombs and temples show animated scenes of ancient daily life.
