Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Letters of Thomas Carlyle, Vol. 1 This Selection from Carlyle's Correspondence is a sequel to the "Letters of Thomas Carlyle," published some years ago under the editorship of Professor Charles Eliot Norton, and brings to a completion the "Epistolary autobiography" begun by the publication of the "Early Letters." The New Letters have been chosen from an immense number now in my possession, or placed at my disposal by the kindness of the owners; and the two principal objects aimed at in making the Selection, have been, first, to present only the best and most characteristic examples of Carlyle's Letters; and, secondly, to arrange these, with occasional extracts from other Letters which are not of sufficient importance for publication in full, so that when read in connection with his "Reminiscences" and his Notes and Introductions to the "Letters and Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle," the whole might serve as an autobiography or picture of his life, self-drawn and therefore indisputably true and faithful in outline, and complete enough in detail for all legitimate purposes. As no Life of Carlyle, satisfactory to those who knew him intimately, has yet appeared, the autobiography which he has thus unconsciously traced in his Letters and Annotations is of more than usual value and importance in elucidating his character and conduct and in explaining the conditions and circumstances under which he lived and worked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Letters and Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle, Vol. 1 of 2 Bow of Ulysses (the long bow of Ulysses it should have been), provoked numerous damaging replies, the most effective of which was 'mr. Froude's Negrophobia; or, Don Quixote as a Cook's Tourist, ' by Mr. N. D. Davis. His 'life and Letters of Erasmus' was subjected to fierce attacks for its blatant inaccuracy. Whatever he touched he twisted and transmogrified, and his 'life of Carlyle, ' which he considered of more permanent value than any other of his books, was his biggest blunder. His father bought up and burnt the greater part of the edition of his Shadows of the Clouds.' His 'nemesis of Faith was publicly burnt by William Sewell at Exeter College. It would have been well for all concerned had his Carlyle manuscripts been burnt before reaching the printer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle, Vol. 1 The Letters which form these volumes were placed in my hands by Mr. Carlyle in 1871. They are annotated throughout by himself. The few additional observations occasionally required are marked with my initials. I have not thought it necessary to give an introductory narrative of Mrs. Carlyle's previous history, the whole of it being already related in my account of the 'first forty years' of her husband's life. To this I must ask the reader who wishes for information to be so good as to refer. Mr. Carlyle did not order the publication of these Letters, though he anxiously desired it. He left the decision to Mr. Forster, Mr. John Carlyle, and myself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Love Letters of Thomas Carlyle and Jane Welsh, Vol. 2 of 2: Edited by Alexander Carlyle His anxieties relieved by receipt of Miss Welsh's last Letter. Blessed be Cadmus, who first imported letters into Europe; blessed be Jane who makes so noble a use of that invention. She transports him from the smoky furnaces of Birmingham home to clear skies and souls that love him. - What a strange tragi-comedy is that of Dugald G., which she describes so neatly and with such graphic touches! Her conduct in the affair a pretty mixture of mercy, gracefulness, and female cunning. Wishes to know to whom she is "engaged" is he a genius and "elegant"? Is he a poet or a philosopher or both in one? - Asks if she is deliberating about the task he assigned her; he win take no denial. - Is idle himself: Nondum should be his motto, with Poppies argent and three Sloths dormant on a Tree disleaved. Is growing quite an Asiatic; and alas, this is not "Araby the Blest"! - Day-dreams of becoming the interpreter of truth and manly integrity and imaginative beauty, with Jane his fair and pure Egeria, to perfect, adorn, and recompense his labours! - Is going back to London, and perhaps into Kent with Mrs. Strachey and the Orator. - She must translate something of Schiller's for the "Life"; Has many things to tell Carlyle, had she time. Has got a new Brother, the handsomest she ever saw or fancied, - Baillie by name. His want of genius alone saved her from falling seriously in love with him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Thomas Carlyle to His Youngest Sister: Edited With an Introductory Essay by Charles Townsend Copeland The letters printed in this volume were mainly written by Thomas Carlyle to his youngest sister, Mrs. Robert Hanning, who died in Toronto on the thirteenth day of December, 1897. Other members of the family are represented in the correspondence; there are a few letters - these perhaps the most interesting - from Carlyle to his mother; a few, also, from the mother to her oldest and to her youngest child. The collection extends from 1832 to 1890, when Mr. John Carlyle Aitken wrote to inform his aunt, Mrs. Hanning, of the death of James Carlyle, her youngest brother. The editor of these letters found it desirable to make a careful study of all the published Carlyle documents. The introductory essay on Carlyle as a Letter-Writer grew out of a comparison between Carlyle's correspondence with his family, and his letters to other persons, already printed by Mr. Norton and Mr. Froude.
