Book excerpt: What we witness today in the diversity of organizations, businesses, and companies, coupled with the expansion of their activities, aligns with the tremendous and rapid industrial and technological revolution. Especially regarding communication, rapid updates, and the shift towards digital business management. This casts a daunting shadow upon those unable to keep pace with this astonishing progress. This must compel everyone to break free from the shackles of confusion and the constraints of incapacity. Working on bridging the growing knowledge gap is essential. This imperative should drive all organizations, businesses, and companies towards embracing Information and Knowledge Technology widely, entering the era of the knowledge economy. This transition involves establishing specialized units for information and knowledge management, operating around the clock to keep up with consecutive developments that impact the business trajectory. The undeniable truths before us today show that strategic management and strategic thinking have become the topics of paramount interest in the business landscape. This heightened attention is because of the intense competition in markets, the scarcity of resources, and the rapid emergence of local and international changes. These factors cause a discerning management capable of making decisions that align with events or changes affecting organizations, businesses, and companies. We found ourselves today in dire need of exceptional talents who shape events, craft sustainable strategies, set achievable goals, and manage challenging situations with their advanced tools. All of this can only come through a shift in our perspective; moving away from the confines of routine thinking to embrace the vast realm of innovation. Thinking outside the box is required from everyone today. It is the foundation and effective solution for all management problems in its broadest sense. We frequently heard this term, prompting some to question its meaning. But it refers to stepping out of the confines of the issue or problem one is facing. It involves ceasing the repetitive attempts at solving it and confronting the situation as if it did not attach one to it. Just like a person cannot evaluate the exterior paint of a building while being inside, in this scenario, vision is inherently limited.

Book excerpt: Discover the cognitive tools that lead to creative thinking and problem-solving with this “well-written and easy-to-follow” guide (Library Journal). Explore the “thinking tools” of extraordinary people, from Albert Einstein and Jane Goodall to Mozart and Virginia Woolf, and learn how you can practice the same imaginative skills to become your creative best. With engaging narratives and examples, Robert and Michèle Root-Bernstein investigate cognitive tools such as observing, recognizing patterns, modeling, playing, and more. Sparks of Genius is “a clever, detailed and demanding fitness program for the creative mind” and a groundbreaking guidebook for anyone interested in imaginative thinking, lifelong learning, and transdisciplinary education (Kirkus Reviews). “How different the painter at the easel and the physicist in the laboratory! Yet the Root-Bernsteins recognize the deep-down similarity of all creative thinking, whether in art or science. They demonstrate this similarity by comparing the accounts that various pioneers and inventors have left of their own creative processes: for Picasso just as for Einstein, for Klee just as for Feynman, the creative impulse always begins in vision, in emotion, in intuition. . . . With a lavishly illustrated chapter devoted to each tool, readers quickly realize just how far the imagination can stretch.” —Booklist “A powerful book . . . Sparks of Genius presents radically different ways of approaching problems.” —American Scientist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creativity has long been thought of as a personal trait, a gift bestowed on some and unachievable by others. While we laud the products of creativity, the stories behind them are often abridged to the elusive "aha!" moment, the result of a momentary stroke of genius. In The Craft of Creativity Matthew A. Cronin and Jeffrey Loewenstein present a new way to understand how we innovate. They emphasize the importance of the journey and reveal the limitations of focusing on outcomes. Drawing on a wide range of scholarship, their own research, and interviews with professionals and learners who employ creativity in the arts, engineering, business, and more, Cronin and Loewenstein argue that creativity is a cognitive process that hinges on changing one's perspective. It's a skill that anyone can hone, and one that benefits from thinking with others and over time. Breaking new ground in the discussion about how we innovate, this book provides strategies that everyone can use to be more creative.

Topical coverage includes play, constructionism, multimodal learning and project-/problem-based learning. Creativity is uniquely positioned throughout the book as an integral component of the educational process and also as a foundational aspect of self-actualization, thriving communities, and humane societies. Through in-depth, empirically based discussions of the philosophical, curricular and pedagogical elements of creativity, Sullivan demonstrates how creativity can be fostered across the curriculum through the use of digital-learning technologies in design, personal expression and problem-solving activities.

It uses a new 7 C’s basis for understanding creativity (creators, creating, cooperation, context, creations, consumption, and curricula). This new approach to creativity is an extension of the 4 ‘P’ approach (person, process, press, and product) which has dominated the literature since the 1960s. In each section, there are two chapters, which illustrate work on the topic and focus on some key issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation underlying our development of a "handbook" of creativity was different from what usually is described by editors of other such volumes. Our sense that a handbook was needed sprang not from a deluge of highly erudite studies calling out for organization, nor did it stem from a belief that the field had become so fully articulated that such a book was necessary to provide summation and reference. Instead, this handbook was conceptualized as an attempt to provide structure and organization for a field of study that, from our perspective, had come to be a large-scale example of a "degenerating" research program (see Brown, Chapter 1). The handbook grew out of a series of discussions that spanned several years. At the heart of most of our interactions was a profound unhappiness with the state of research on creativity. Our consensus was that the number of "good" works published on creativity each year was small and growing smaller. Further, we could not point to a journal, text, or professional organization that was providing leadership for the field in shaping a scientifically sound framework for the development of research programs in creativity. At the same time, we were casting about for a means of honoring a dear friend, E. Paul Torrance. Our decision was that we might best be able to honor Paul and influence research on creativity by developing a handbook designed to challenge traditional perspectives while offering research agendas based on contemporary psychological views.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With few exceptions, scholarship on creativity has focused on its positive aspects while largely ignoring its dark side. This includes not only creativity deliberately aimed at hurting others, such as crime or terrorism, or at gaining unfair advantages, but also the accidental negative side effects of well-intentioned acts. This book brings together essays written by experts from various fields (psychology, criminal justice, sociology, engineering, education, history, and design) and with different interests (personality development, mental health, deviant behavior, law enforcement, and counter-terrorism) to illustrate the nature of negative creativity, examine its variants, call attention to its dangers, and draw conclusions about how to prevent it or protect society from its effects.
