Near-infrared spectroscopy and imaging ap proaches permit the noninvasive functional assessment of the human brain at bedside. Main advantages of these optical techniques are the biochemical specificity of the meas urements and the potential of measuring correlates of intracellular and intravascular oxy genation simultaneously. Recent data indicate that one may also measure a more direct correlate of neuronal activity associated with changes in light scattering. In this volume, recent technical progress of the optical method is covered as well as the physiological basis of the measurements. In simultaneous studies, near-infrared spec troscopy measurements are directly compared to other functional methods, especially PET and fMRI and examples are given for new applications of the NIRS-method. Based on re sults obtained with optical methods and other functional techniques the latest in our under standing of the coupling of neuronal activity and cerebral blood flow response is reviewed. This is an important basis for a better understanding of all functional neuroi maging methods which rely on neurovascular coupling such as PET, SPET and fMRI. Once more this meeting reflected the changing trends in biochemical research. At the 1982 meeting most of the speakers discussed isolating new enzymes and trying to characterize them. At this meeting many speakers discussed interpretations of three-dimensional struc ture or regulatory elements of the genes controlling for the tissue-specific expression of the enzyme. Hopefully, readers will find the proceedings of the meeting to be of interest. Though they reflects the scientific information that was presented at the meeting, they do not indicate the level of personal interactions that went on during the meeting. Once again, the willingness of the participants to discuss unpublished data and to share thoughts about the future directions of their research helped make this, like our previous seven meetings, a special scientific experience for those who attended.

This book is a collection of papers presented at that symposium. A native of Ireland, Dr. Kinsella received his bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences in 1961 from the University of Dublin. He received his master's degree in biology in 1965 and a doctorate in food chemistry in 1967 from Pennsylvania State University. He joined the Food Science faculty at Cornell University in 1967. While at Cornell, he served as Chair of the Department of Food Science from 1977-1985 and Director of the Institute of Food Science from 1980-1987. He was designated Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor of Food Biochemistry in 1981, a Fulbright Fellow in 1983, and was selected as the General Foods Distinguished Professor of Food Science in 1984.
