This is because the year 2007 corresponds to the 50 year anniversary of the three-nucleon force model based on the two-pion-exchange mechanism proposed by Fujita Miyazawa. Achievements of three-nucleon force studies, both in theory and in experiment, during this half century are presented and future perspectives for three-nucleon force studies pointing towards a new era are explored.

Book excerpt: In one way or another, Gerry Brown has been concerned with questions about the universe, about its vast expanse as well as about its most miniscule fundamental constituents of matter throughout his entire life. In his endeavours to understand the universe in many manifestations from nuclei all the way to the stars, he has been influenced by some of the most prominent physicists of the 20th century, and he himself, in turn, has influenced a great many scholars. This volume, a collection of articles dedicated to Gerry on his 85th birthday, contains discussions of many of the issues which have attracted his interest over the years. The contributions are written by his former students, co-authors, colleagues and admirers and they are strongly influenced by Gerry''s own scientific tastes. With this compilation we want to express our respect, admiration and gratitude; we want to celebrate Gerry''s scientific and scholarly achievements, the inspirational quality of his teaching and the enthusiasm which he himself displayed in his research and which stimulated so many of his students and colleagues over the decades.

Book Synopsis The Structure of the Nucleon by : Anthony W. Thomas
Download or read book The Structure of the Nucleon written by Anthony W. Thomas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-11-17 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the only stable baryon, the nucleon is of crucial importance in particle physics. Since the nucleon is a building block for all atomic nuclei, there is a need to analyse the its structure in order to fully understand the essential properties of all atomic nuclei. After more than forty years of research on the nucleon, both the experimental and theoretical situations have matured to a point where a synthesis of the results becomes indispensable. Here, A.W. Thomas and W. Weise present a unique report on the extensive empirical studies, theoretical foundations and the different models of the nucleon. The appendices provide an extensive summary of formulae needed in practical calculations. From the contents: electromagnetic structure of the nucleon, weak probes of nucleon structure, deep inelastic lepton scattering on the nucleon; elements of QCD, aspects of non-perturbative QCD, Chiral Symmetry and nucleon structure, models of the nucleon
Book Synopsis Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory by : Timo A. Lähde
Download or read book Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory written by Timo A. Lähde and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This primer begins with a brief introduction to the main ideas underlying Effective Field Theory (EFT) and describes how nuclear forces are obtained from first principles by introducing a Euclidean space-time lattice for chiral EFT. It subsequently develops the related technical aspects by addressing the two-nucleon problem on the lattice and clarifying how it fixes the numerical values of the low-energy constants of chiral EFT. In turn, the spherical wall method is introduced and used to show how improved lattice actions render higher-order corrections perturbative. The book also presents Monte Carlo algorithms used in actual calculations. In the last part of the book, the Euclidean time projection method is introduced and used to compute the ground-state properties of nuclei up to the mid-mass region. In this context, the construction of appropriate trial wave functions for the Euclidean time projection is discussed, as well as methods for determining the energies of the low-lying excitations and their spatial structure. In addition, the so-called adiabatic Hamiltonian, which allows nuclear reactions to be precisely calculated, is introduced using the example of alpha-alpha scattering. In closing, the book demonstrates how Nuclear Lattice EFT can be extended to studies of unphysical values of the fundamental parameters, using the triple-alpha process as a concrete example with implications for the anthropic view of the Universe. Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory offers a concise, self-contained, and introductory text suitable for self-study use by graduate students and newcomers to the field of modern computational techniques for atomic nuclei and nuclear reactions.

Book excerpt: A "what" and "how" guide for managers who do not have a formal background in finance, this book equips them to perform their tasks more effectively and efficiently. It describes the application of concepts of finance in the decision-making of operating managers. The book follows a simple, non-technical language in explaining the concepts of finance. The text is divided into three parts : Part I on Financial Analysis deals with profit and loss statement, financial ratios and funds flow statement. Part II on Cost Analysis is devoted to a discussion on the concepts of cost, utility of costs in decision making, and profit planning and control. Part III on Funds Management explains the techniques of fund allocation, working capital management, and financial planning and policy. This book is made reader-friendly by its lucid presentation of topics and by adopting a practical situational approach in solving problems. Besides practising operational managers, all those preparing for professional examinations would find this book to be of enormous help to them. The book is also suitable for students of business management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the economics of small and medium-sized enterprises not only their micro-aspects but also their larger macroeconomic role, which has achieved little attention. Small Business Management takes a pragmatic "how-to" perspective illustrating many practical examples and applications from the business world. It explains how to achieve optimum benefits from the limited resources available to small firms,as well as how to plan for growth and succession in business. It also explores arguments both for and against owing a small business. This book has been written in the conviction that there are many myths about small firms, unfounded on fact or academic research.

Book excerpt: Bringing together experts from 15 countries, this book is based on the lectures and contributions of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on “Nanotechnological Basis for Advanced Sensors” held in Sozopol, Bulgaria, 30 May - 11 June, 2010. It gives a broad overview on this topic, and includes articles on: techniques for preparation and characterization of sensor materials; different types of nanoscaled materials for sensor applications, addressing both their structure (nanoparticles, nanocomposites, nanostructured films, etc.) and chemical nature (carbon-based, oxides, glasses, etc.); and on advanced sensors that exploit nanoscience and nanotechnology. In addition, the volume represents an interdisciplinary approach with authors coming from diverse fields such as physics, chemistry, engineering, materials science and biology. A particular strength of the book is its combination of longer papers, introducing the basic knowledge on a certain topic, and brief contributions highlighting special types of sensors and sensor materials.
Book Synopsis Lectures On Quantum Field Theory (Second Edition) by : Ashok Das
Download or read book Lectures On Quantum Field Theory (Second Edition) written by Ashok Das and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 941 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises the lectures of a two-semester course on quantum field theory, presented in a quite informal and personal manner. The course starts with relativistic one-particle systems, and develops the basics of quantum field theory with an analysis on the representations of the Poincaré group. Canonical quantization is carried out for scalar, fermion, Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories. Covariant quantization of gauge theories is also carried out with a detailed description of the BRST symmetry. The Higgs phenomenon and the standard model of electroweak interactions are also developed systematically. Regularization and (BPHZ) renormalization of field theories as well as gauge theories are discussed in detail, leading to a derivation of the renormalization group equation. In addition, two chapters — one on the Dirac quantization of constrained systems and another on discrete symmetries — are included for completeness, although these are not covered in the two-semester course. This second edition includes two new chapters, one on Nielsen identities and the other on basics of global supersymmetry. It also includes two appendices, one on fermions in arbitrary dimensions and the other on gauge invariant potentials and the Fock-Schwinger gauge.
