Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews a number of spectacular advances that have been made in the study of supersymmetric quantum field theories in the last few years. Highlights include exact calculations of Wilson loop expectation values, and highly nontrivial quantitative checks of the long-standing electric-magnetic duality conjectures The book starts with an introductory article presenting a survey of recent advances, aimed at a wide audience with a background and interest in theoretical physics. The following articles are written for advanced students and researchers in quantum field theory, string theory and mathematical physics, our goal being to familiarize these readers with the forefront of current research. The topics covered include recent advances in the classification and vacuum structure of large families of N=2 supersymmetric field theories, followed by an extensive discussion of the localisation method, one of the most powerful tools for exact studies of supersymmetric field theories. The quantities that have been studied in this way are partition functions, expectation values of line operators, and supersymmetric indices. The book also reviews recently discovered connections between SUSY field theories in four dimensions and two-dimensional conformal field theory. These connections have a counterpart in relations between three-dimensional gauge theories and Chern-Simons theory; the book’s closing chapters explore connections with string theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the dynamics of gauge theories is crucial, given the fact that all known interactions are based on the principle of local gauge symmetry. Beyond the perturbative regime, however, this is a notoriously difficult problem. Requiring invariance under supersymmetry turns out to be a suitable tool for analyzing supersymmetric gauge theories over a larger region of the space of parameters. Supersymmetric quantum field theories in four dimensions with extended N=2 supersymmetry are further constrained and have therefore been a fertile field of research in theoretical physics for quite some time. Moreover, there are far-reaching mathematical ramifications that have led to a successful dialogue with differential and algebraic geometry. These lecture notes aim to introduce students of modern theoretical physics to the fascinating developments in the understanding of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in a coherent fashion. Starting with a gentle introduction to electric-magnetic duality, the author guides readers through the key milestones in the field, which include the work of Seiberg and Witten, Nekrasov, Gaiotto and many others. As an advanced graduate level text, it assumes that readers have a working knowledge of supersymmetry including the formalism of superfields, as well as of quantum field theory techniques such as regularization, renormalization and anomalies. After his graduation from the University of Tokyo, Yuji Tachikawa worked at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton and the Kavli Institute for Physics and Mathematics of the Universe. Presently at the Department of Physics, University of Tokyo, Tachikawa is the author of several important papers in supersymmetric quantum field theories and string theory.

Book excerpt: We analyze the phase structure of supersymmetric chiral gauge theories with gauge group SU(N), an antisymmetric, and F ≤ N + 3 flavors, in the presence of a cubic superpotential. When F = N + 3 the theory flows to a superconformal fixed point in the infrared, and new dual descriptions of this theory are uncovered. The theory with odd N admits a self-dual magnetic description. For general N, we find an infinite family of magnetic dual descriptions, characterized by arbitrarily large gauge groups and additional classical global symmetries that are truncated by nonperturbative effects. The infrared dynamics of these theories are analyzed using a-maximization, which supports the claim that all these theories flow to the same superconformal fixed point. A very rich phase structure is found when the number of flavors is reduced below N + 3, including a new self-dual point, transitions from conformal to confining, and a nonperturbative instability for F ≤ N. We also give examples of chiral theories with antisymmetrics that have nonchiral duals.

Book excerpt: In this thesis we use supersymmetry and the gauge-gravity duality to shed light on some dynamical features of strongly-coupled non-Abelian gauge theories. In the first half of the thesis, we consider singular superpotentials of four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric QCD and show that they must exist. In particular, using some non-trivial consistency checks, we show that these superpotentials, albeit singular, are perfectly sensible, and can be used to reproduce in a simple way both the low energy effective dynamics as well as some special higher-derivative terms. In the second half of the thesis, we investigate the behavior of timelike, spacelike and Euclidean stationary string configurations on a five-dimensional AdS black hole background which, in the context of the gauge-gravity duality, correspond to quark-antiquark pairs steadily moving in an N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills thermal bath. We find that there are many branches of solutions depending on the quark velocity and separation as well as on whether Euclidean or Lorentzian configurations are examined. Such solutions can, in principle, be used to determine some transport properties of strongly-coupled N=4 thermal bath.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores aspects of gravity and quantum field theory (QFT). The first part is devoted to the interplay between manifest T-duality symmetry and higher-derivative corrections to the low-energy effective action of string theory. The second part focuses on exact results in supersymmetric gauge theories. We first discuss T-duality symmetry of string theory from various perspectives. We next review the manifest-duality-symmetric formulation of low-energy effective actions: double field theory (DFT) and its higher-derivative generalization, HSZ (Hohm-Siegel-Zwiebach) theory. We then compute on-shell three-point amplitudes in the HSZ theory. We show that these amplitudes factorize, as in bosonic and heterotic string theories, but they differ from both. Further, we analyze degrees of freedom in the HSZ theory. The spectrum of the theory contains massive spin-2 ghosts and massive scalars, in addition to massless fields. The massive modes can be integrated out exactly at the quadratic level, leading to an infinite series of higher-derivative corrections. Finally, we give a ghost-free massive extension of linearized DFT, which employs novel mass terms for the dilaton and the graviton. In the second part, we start by reviewing the exact results for partition functions of supersymmetric gauge theories on spheres. Exact results, however, are not available for minimally supersymmetric theories on S4 and S6. Minahan conjectured the form of perturbative partition functions for theories on Sd with eight and sixteen supersymmetries. We show that this form gives the correct one-loop divergences of the flat-space super Yang-Mills (SYM) upon taking the radius of the sphere to infinity. We also prove the conjecture explicitly for theories with eight supersymmetries. Further, we extend our results to theories with four supersymmetries for d

After an introduction and a brief review of some basic concepts at the interface of gauge theories and string theory, we begin by examining the duality cascade phenomenon for quiver gauge theories. We give a general formulation for these cascades and use it to identify an example of a duality wall in a theory which can be realized on D3-branes at the apex of the complex cone over the zeroth Hirzebruch surface with the addition of fractional branes. Next, we compute global U(1) charges for the matter fields of the del Pezzo gauge theories and formulate several of their features in the language of exceptional Lie algebras. We suggest the possibility of global symmetry enhancement at infinite coupling for these theories. Finally, we present two contributions to the solution of the geometric engineering problem. We construct the toric phases of the yp,q theories and then identify and study a new infinite family of quiver gauge theories, Xpq, whose dual geometries are known in terms of toric diagrams.

Book excerpt: The book begins with a brief review of supersymmetry, and the construction of the minimal supersymmetric standard model and approaches to supersymmetry breaking. General non-perturbative methods are also reviewed leading to the development of holomorphy and the Affleck-Dine-Seiberg superpotential as powerful tools for analysing supersymmetric theories. Seiberg duality is discussed in detail, with many example applications provided, with special attention paid to its use in understanding dynamical supersysmmetry breaking. The Seiberg-Witten theory of monopoles is introduced through the analysis of simpler N=1 analogues. Superconformal field theories are described along with the most recent development known as "amaximization". Supergravity theories are examined in 4, 10, and 11 dimensions, allowing for a discussion of anomaly and gaugino mediation, and setting the stage for the anti- de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence. This book is unique in containing an overview of the important developments in supersymmetry since the publication of "Suppersymmetry and Supergravity" by Wess and Bagger. It also strives to cover topics that are of interest to both formal and phenomenological theorists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exact results are a key component for understanding any physical theory. Unfortunately in the context of quantum field theory (QFT) they are in general impossible to obtain, and we need some sort of approximations. However there exists certain non-realistic theories rich in exactly computable quantities, and from those exact quantities we can infer various theoretical implications for realistic quantum field theories. Supersymmetric gauge theories stand out among these non-realistic theories as the best compromise between the contradicting requirements of realism and exact computability. This thesis consists of three projects, in which we explore some exact results in supersymmetric quantum field theory. In the first project we define and describe irregular vertex operators in the H_3^+ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. Irregular vertex operators are a QFT-equivalent of irregular singular points in the theory of differential equations, and their study is motivated by a relation to the partition functions of some asymptotically free four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories. The definition is shown to be compatible with previously defined irregular vertex operators in Liouville theory through a known duality between the H_3^+ and Liouville theories. In the second project we use supersymmetric localization to compute the partition function of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on a four-sphere in the presence of a surface defect on a two-sphere subspace, taking the form of a two-dimensional gauged linear sigma model. The result generalizes the known results for separate supersymmetric gauge theories on the separate spaces. We obtain a partition function in the form of a standard partition function on S^4, with a modified instanton partition function and an additional insertion corresponding to a shifted version of the S^2 partition function. In the third project we develop a new method for finding the ground states of fermions in the presence of BPS monopoles. We use it to find the ground states in the case of Abelian BPS monopoles in R^3, which were previously unknown.

Book excerpt: This book pedagogically describes recent developments in gauge theory, in particular four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theory, in relation to various fields in mathematics, including algebraic geometry, geometric representation theory, vertex operator algebras. The key concept is the instanton, which is a solution to the anti-self-dual Yang–Mills equation in four dimensions. In the first part of the book, starting with the systematic description of the instanton, how to integrate out the instanton moduli space is explained together with the equivariant localization formula. It is then illustrated that this formalism is generalized to various situations, including quiver and fractional quiver gauge theory, supergroup gauge theory. The second part of the book is devoted to the algebraic geometric description of supersymmetric gauge theory, known as the Seiberg–Witten theory, together with string/M-theory point of view. Based on its relation to integrable systems, how to quantize such a geometric structure via the Ω-deformation of gauge theory is addressed. The third part of the book focuses on the quantum algebraic structure of supersymmetric gauge theory. After introducing the free field realization of gauge theory, the underlying infinite dimensional algebraic structure is discussed with emphasis on the connection with representation theory of quiver, which leads to the notion of quiver W-algebra. It is then clarified that such a gauge theory construction of the algebra naturally gives rise to further affinization and elliptic deformation of W-algebra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author introduces the supersymmetric localization technique, a new approach for computing path integrals in quantum field theory on curved space (time) defined with interacting Lagrangian. The author focuses on a particular quantity called the superconformal index (SCI), which is defined by considering the theories on the product space of two spheres and circles, in order to clarify the validity of so-called three-dimensional mirror symmetry, one of the famous duality proposals. In addition to a review of known results, the author presents a new definition of SCI by considering theories on the product space of real-projective space and circles. In this book, he explains the concept of SCI from the point of view of quantum mechanics and gives localization computations by reducing field theoretical computations to many-body quantum mechanics. He applies his new results of SCI with real-projective space to test three-dimensional mirror symmetry, one of the dualities of quantum field theory. Real-projective space is known to be an unorientable surface like the Mobius strip, and there are many exotic effects resulting from Z2 holonomy of the surface. Thanks to these exotic structures, his results provide completely new evidence of three-dimensional mirror symmetry. The equivalence expected from three-dimensional mirror symmetry is transformed into a conjectural non-trivial mathematical identity through the new SCI, and he performs the proof of the identity using a q-binomial formula.
