Book excerpt: "Being governor is like no other job although it has similarities to being a country doctor. Like a physician, a governor is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, asleep, awake, eating, in the shower, traveling in a car, or at a meeting. There are emergencies, so he lives with unpredictability. As earlier noted, many state government activities involve health and medical questions, areas in which I have expertise. There, the similarities end. There is nothing like being governor, not even being a member of a president's Cabinet."—from Doc No Indiana governor in the 20th century has been more popular or successful than Otis R. Bowen. In his long-awaited autobiography, "Doc" writes in rich detail about the hard work and persistence that got him into and through medical school. His commitment to serving people made him a beloved family physician in Bremen, a respected state legislator and legislative leader, and one of the most esteemed governors in Indiana history. Otis Bowen grew up poor in Fulton County, but was rich in the things that matter. With the support of his parents, siblings, teachers and friends, he pursued a dream of becoming a family physician, making many sacrifices to finance his way through medical school As a newly minted doctor, Bowen first practiced medicine in the Army. He describes his experience on the field of combat in the Pacific during the last major battle of World War II, and tells of his life after coming home from the war to serve the medical needs of a small northern Indiana community. We learn, too, of his personal life, about his own family and his first two wives, Beth Bowen and Rose Bowen, the loneliness and emptiness he endured after they died painfully of cancer, and how his third wife, Carol, has filled that void. An almost accidental entry into politics and public life led Bowen to the capitals of Indiana and the nation. Drafted as a candidate for Marshall County coroner in 1952, Bowen moved up from that office to become a member of the Indiana House of Representatives, to House leadership as Minority Leader and Speaker, to the governor's office in 1973, and to President Ronald Reagan's cabinet in 1985. The first person to serve eight consecutive years as Indiana's Governor, Bowen candidly explores the challenges, crises and triumphs of that period. In an equally candid way, he recounts his efforts and frustrations as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As warm, down-to-earth, and genuine as its subject, Doc will be welcomed by all Hoosiers, no matter their political stripe.

In search of high-stakes poker, the couple hits the saloons of Dodge City. Corral links their names forever in American frontier mythology—when neither man wanted fame or deserved notoriety.

Book excerpt: "Our role is to look at every student as an individual and to help him or her grow. That means not only educating them in the three Rs, but teaching them how to think for themselves, make decisions, solve problems, and be ready for the world." This was new principal Dennis Littky's message to his staff at Thayer High School--the vision that would guide the rural school's journey from run-down district joke to national showplace. The unorthodox methods he championed, including integrated subject matter, team teaching, apprenticeship, advisories, and individualized curriculum, shook up the failing school and helped to transform a disaffected and dropout-prone student body into a proud and vibrant community of learners. In this book, the basis for the NBC-TV movie A Town Torn Apart, Susan Kammeraad-Campbell shares the true story of Thayer's renaissance, the man who led it, and the extraordinary effect it had on tiny Winchester, New Hampshire. For educators eager to transform teaching and learning in their own schools, this behind-the-scenes perspective provides insights into the great challenge--and even greater reward--of educational reform done right. Susan Kammeraad-Campbell is an award-winning journalist who has worked for newspapers in the Midwest and New England, where she originally covered Littky's story for the Keene Sentinel. Currently director of marketing publications for the Medical University of South Carolina, she is cofounder and publisher of Joggling Board Press. Book excerpt: In this rare, behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in hospitals across the country, a longtime medical insider and international authority on childbirth assesses the flawed American maternity care system, powerfully demonstrating how it fails to deliver safe, effective care for both mothers and babies. Written for mothers and fathers, obstetricians, nurses, midwives, scientists, insurance professionals, and anyone contemplating having a child, this passionate exposé documents how, in the most expensive maternity care system in the world, women have lost control over childbirth and what the disturbing results of this phenomenon have been. Born in the USA examines issues including midwifery and the safety of out-of-hospital birth, how the process of becoming a doctor can adversely affect both practitioners and their patients, and why there has been a rise in the use of risky but doctor-friendly interventions, including the use of Cytotec, a drug that has not been approved by the FDA for pregnant women. Most importantly, this gripping investigation, supported by many troubling personal stories, explores how women can reclaim the childbirth experience for the betterment of themselves and their children. Born in the USA tells: * Why women are 70% more likely to die in childbirth in America than in Europe * What motivates obstetricians to use dangerous and unnecessary drugs and procedures * How the present malpractice crisis has been aggravated by the fear of accountability * Why procedures such as cesarean section and birth inductions are so readily used
