Apart from circumstantial evidence, there's little information about the author of Essays; Including Biographies and Miscellaneous Pieces, in Prose and Poetry, published in 1841. Plato lived in a milieu of colored Hartford, Connecticut, in the early nineteenth century. Although long believed to have been African American herself, she may also, Ron Welburn argues, have been American Indian, like the father in her poem "The Natives of America." Combining literary criticism, ethnohistory, and social history, Welburn uses Plato as an example of how Indians in the Long Island Sound region adapted and prevailed despite the contemporary rhetoric of Indian disappearance. This study seeks to raise Plato's profile as an author as well as to highlight the dynamics of Indian resistance and isolation that have contributed to her enigmatic status as a literary figure.

Church's friendships and interests - religion, history, literature, music, architecture, agriculture, and science - as well as his skills as a crafty entrepreneur are explored. Beautiful reproductions of Church's extraordinary home Olana, which one can visit today in eastern New York, are also featured."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Horace Wells has come to be viewed over the years as an enigmatic figure. Owing to his death by suicide in early 1848, and his inability to participate in the debate that soon erupted over credit for the discovery of anesthesia, the literature on him is confused, fragmentary and incomplete. While he is considered by some to have been the most benevolent and ethically correct participant in the early anesthesia story, an idealist who believed that anesthesia should be "as free as the air we breathe," he has been characterized by others as "volatile," "erratic," "errant," and "wayward."" "In 1991, three years before the celebration of the sesquicentennial of Wells's discovery of inhalation anesthesia, the contributors to this volume decided that it was high time to dig deeper into the literature on Wells and on the early anesthesia controversy and attempt to present an accurate account of Wells and his role in ushering in the era of modern anesthesia. Out of their research has emerged I Awaken To Glory, a compilation of twelve essays which not only present a clearer picture of Wells's efforts in bringing about painless surgery, but also delve into many aspects of his life and character that have been largely ignored." "The initial essay in I Awaken To Glory reviews the period between 1800, when Humphry Davy suggested that nitrous oxide gas might prove useful in alleviating pain during surgical operations, and 1844, when Horace Wells was first to put Davy's observation to the test. It explores why it took forty-four years for this event to happen, and then reviews and explicates the momentous circumstances that afterwards led to the introduction of anesthesia into surgery. Two succeeding essays describe and analyze Horace Wells's dental practice for the very first time, also presenting in transcribed form his "Day Book A," perhaps the most complete record extant of dental office transactions in the United States at mid-century. Three essays discuss some of the people who played an integral part in Wells's life: his wife Elizabeth; John M. Riggs, who performed on Wells the first operation under nitrous oxide anesthesia; and Christopher Starr Brewster, the American dentist in Paris who espoused Wells's cause in France. Other essays are devoted to Wells's twentieth-century biographer, W. Harry Archer, who, with his wife, preserved the manuscripts which remain the chief sources for documenting Horace Wells's life; the reception of Wells's discovery in Great Britain; the pictorial iconography of Wells; and his depictions in sculpture and three dimensional art. A number of portraits of Wells and his wife within have not been reproduced before, and several important documents also appear in print for the very first time." "With the publication of I Awaken To Glory we now have a more perfect reconstruction of Wells the discoverer, Wells the scientist, Wells the inventor, Wells the dentist, Wells the humanist, and - last, but not least - Wells the man. The materials in this volume combine with W. Harry Archer's "Life and Letters of Horace Wells" to comprise the definitive documentation of Wells and his extraordinary contribution to medicine."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incredible story of a forgotten hero of nineteenth century New York City—a former slave, Yale scholar, minister, and international leader of the Antebellum abolitionist movement. At the age of 19, scared and illiterate, James Pennington escaped from slavery in 1827 and soon became one of the leading voices against slavery prior to the Civil War. Just ten years after his escape, Pennington was ordained as a priest after studying at Yale and was soon traveling all over the world as an anti-slavery advocate. He was so well respected by European audiences that the University of Heidelberg awarded him an honorary doctorate, making him the first person of African descent to receive such a degree. This treatment was far cry from his home across the Atlantic, where people like him, although no longer slaves, were still second-class citizens. As he fought for equal rights in America, Pennington's voice was not limited to the preacher's pulpit. He wrote the first-ever "History of the Colored People" as well as a careful study of the moral basis for civil disobedience, which would be echoed decades later by Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. More than a century before Rosa Parks took her monumental bus ride, Pennington challenged segregated seating in New York City street cars. He was beaten and arrested, but eventually vindicated when the New York State Supreme Court ordered the cars to be integrated. Although the struggle for equality was far from over, Pennington retained a delightful sense of humor, intellectual vivacity, and inspiring faith through it all. American to the Backbone brings to life this fascinating, forgotten pioneer, who helped lay the foundation for the contemporary civil rights revolution and inspire generations of future leaders.

Linsley Award from the Association for the Study of Connecticut History (2010) This is the first book-length account of the pioneering and prolific Kellogg family of lithographers, active in Connecticut for over four decades. Daniel Wright Kellogg opened his print shop on Main Street in Hartford five years before Nathaniel Currier went into a similar business in New York and more than twenty-five years before Currier founded his partnership with James M. Ives, yet Daniel and his brothers Elijah and Edmund Kellogg have long been overshadowed by the Currier & Ives printmaking firm. Editor Nancy Finlay has gathered together eight essays that explore the complexity of the relationships between artists, lithographers, and print, map, and book publishers. Presenting a complete visual overview of the Kelloggs' production between 1830 and 1880, Picturing Victorian America also provides museums, libraries, and private collectors with the information needed to document the Kellogg prints in their own collections. The first comprehensive study of the Kellogg prints, this book demands reconsideration of this Connecticut family's place in the history of American graphic and visual arts. CONTRIBUTORS: Georgia B. Barnhill, Lynne Zacek Bassett, Candice C. Brashears, Nancy Finlay, Elisabeth Hodermarsky, Richard C. Malley, Sally Pierce, Michael Shortell, Kate Steinway.
