Book Synopsis Disabled People, Work and Welfare by : Grover, Chris
Download or read book Disabled People, Work and Welfare written by Grover, Chris and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2015-07 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to challenge the idea that paid work should be seen as an essential means to independence and self-determination for the disabled. Writing in the wake of attempts in many countries to increase the employment rates of disabled people, the contributors show how such efforts have led to an overall erosion of financial support for the disabled and increasing stigmatization of those who are not able to work. Drawing on sociology and philosophy, and mounting a powerful case for the rights of the disabled, the book will be essential for activists, scholars, and policy makers.

Through this interdisciplinary perspective, the book explores the changing roles of patients, caregivers, professionals and institutions, and the wider implications of these changes for social inequalities in health. What obstacles do different groups of patients encounter when negotiating the complex chains of medical and vocational services? Who decides regarding references to specialized treatments, and the provision of comprehensive and coordinated services, and different types of benefits and material support? What is the importance of the resources that patients and caregivers bring to bear in the rehabilitation process?

By addressing the current strengths and weaknesses of disability and employment policy, the book asks Is the dichotomy of 'work for those who can and support for those who cannot' appropriate to the lives of disabled people? Does current and recent policy reduce or reinforce barriers to paid employment? What lessons from other welfare regimes can we draw on to further disabled people's working futures? The book is original in bringing together a wide range of policy insights to bear on the question of disabled people's working futures. It includes analyses of recent policy initiatives as diverse as the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, Draft Disability Bill, the benefits system, New Deal for Disabled People, job retention policy, comparative disability policy, the role of the voluntary sector and 'new policies for a new workplace'. Contributions from academics, NGOs, the OECD and the disabled peoples' movement bring multiple theoretical, professional and user perspectives to the debates at the heart of the book.

Book Synopsis Towards Enabling Geographies by : Edward Hall
Download or read book Towards Enabling Geographies written by Edward Hall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 15 years, geography has made many significant contributions to our understanding of disabled people's identities, lives, and place in society and space. 'Towards Enabling Geographies' brings together leading scholars to showcase the 'second wave' of geographical studies concerned with disability and embodied differences. This area has broadened and challenged conventional boundaries of 'disability', expanding the kinds of embodied differences considered, while continuing to grapple with important challenges such as policy relevance and the use of more inclusionary research approaches. This book demonstrates the value of a spatial conceptualization of disability and disablement to a broader social science audience, whilst examining how this conceptualization can be further developed and refined.

This book was released on 2006-01-24 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Green Paper sets out the Government's proposals for welfare reform, including proposals for incapacity benefit claimants, lone parents and older workers, in order to achieve an 80 per cent employment rate for people of working age. Proposals to reform incapacity benefit include the introduction of: i) a new benefit called Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), to replace incapacity benefit from 2008, with an enhanced employment support element; ii) revised medical assessments which focus on ability and support needs rather than incapacity, to be completed in 12 weeks in most cases; and iii) mandatory work-focused interviews supported by a mandatory action plan for return to work activity for new and existing claimants. Other proposals include a £360 million roll out of the Pathways to Work scheme across the country by 2008 (currently being piloted in seven areas); piloting a new work-related activity premium for lone parents on income support benefit and increasing the frequency of work-focused interviews; improving support for jobseekers over 50 years and working with employers to extend flexible working arrangements. The deadline for responses to this consultation document is 21 April 2006.
Book Synopsis Young Disabled People by : Sonali Shah
Download or read book Young Disabled People written by Sonali Shah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent policies and government initiatives in many Western countries have strengthened the expectation that young disabled people have the right to be involved in decisions affecting their futures. Many of the choices that are currently taken out of young disabled people’s hands, including those relating to education and future employment, are now being viewed as an opportunity to encourage participation in the decision making process. Sonali Shah uses a comparative study of young disabled students within mainstream and special education to determine the influence these recent policies will have on the realization of their long term goals. Young Disabled People: Aspirations, Choices and Constraints will be essential reading for academics in the fields of education, disability studies and employment policy. It will also be valuable to policy makers and teaching and careers professionals.
