Book excerpt: Nearly everyone has someone in their circle of acquaintances who struggles—an out-of-control friend or relative whose habits or relationships are in chaos. Is there any hope, or is he or she doomed to self-destruction? Pastors Rob Cowles and Matt Roberts say God is equal to the challenge! New beginnings are possible, no matter how broken, devastated, or crazy someone’s life may be. Yet today’s churches don’t do messy very well. The Genesis Project is a network of believers whose goal is to plant churches in dark places, targeting people who don’t normally “do” church. Reaching drug addicts, convicts, strippers, and gang members, they’ve seen God do some amazing things with seemingly hopeless lives. The God of New Beginnings tells these dramatic stories, offering practical wisdom for breaking through the darkness in a person’s life: Pursuing real relationships Opening up true stories Pulling together safe communities Getting honest about sin Extending God’s forgiveness and freedom Helping people reset their lives and habits Coping with ongoing complications Not giving up when setbacks occur Freely sharing the victories Keeping the faith life simple Love never fails. And when we incorporate God’s love into our lives and relationships, redemption is possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Church Beginnings provides an intimate look at the struggles of African Americans to establish spiritual communities in the harsh world of slavery in the American colonies. Written by one of today's foremost experts on African American religion, this book traces the growth of the black church from its start in the mid-1700s to the end of the nineteenth century. As Henry Mitchell shows, the first African American churches didn't just organize; they labored hard, long, and sacrificially to form a meaningful, independent faith. Mitchell insightfully takes readers inside this process of development. He candidly examines the challenge of finding adequately trained pastors for new local congregations, confrontations resulting from internal class structure in big city churches, and obstacles posed by emerging denominationalism.Original in its subject matter and singular in its analysis, Mitchell's Black Church Beginnings makes a major contribution to the study of American church history.

There is enormous value in a short, reliable, and careful study of a sequence of events that may have unfamiliar joinings and passageways to modern believers...' - Catholic Historical Review 'A short, readable and informed survey of church history.' - The Church of England Newspaper 'A rich foundation for Catholic understanding and witness.' - Catholic San Francisco ____________ A one-volume history of the Christian people from Pentecost to the present day, with principal focus on the Catholic Church. Having passed AD 2000 it seems appropriate and necessary to have a new short history of the first two millennia of the Christian era. In the last half century there has been a massive amount of research into Church history, published in learned articles and in multi-volume works. Full notice is taken of these recent scholarly initiatives in writing this short account, which is also eminently readable. In each section there is a balance between the institutional and the more directly religious dimensions of the Church - here are some of the elements: bishops, canon law, charity, councils crusades, devotions, heresies, laity, liturgy, martyrs, missionaries, parishes, pilgrimages, popes, prayer, priesthood, religious orders, sacraments, schools, theologians, universities and the vita consacrata. The scope is wide; the pace of the narrative is attractive.

When you learn to exchange the obstacles of life for the promises of God, you will pray with passion and confidence rather than fear or insecurity. From this place of surrender and intimacy, you will discover what it means to become a powerful, effective woman of prayer--a woman whose life overflows with springs of living water that transform not only her own life, but the world around her. With study questions and journaling exercises included, this is the perfect book to go deeper either on your own or with a group.

Book excerpt: Once upon a time, people knew their neighbors. They talked to them, had cook-outs with them, and went to church with them. In our time of unprecedented mobility and increasing isolationism, it's hard to make lasting connections with those who live right outside our front door. We have hundreds of "friends" through online social networking, but we often don't even know the full name of the person who lives right next door. This unique and inspiring book asks the question: What is the most loving thing I can do for the people who live on my street or in my apartment building? Through compelling true stories of lives impacted, the authors show readers how to create genuine friendships with the people who live in closest proximity to them. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter make this book perfect for small groups or individual study.

Hawkins is back with a new book that is all about putting your faith into action. The James Code is practical, personal and action-packed straight from one of the most popular books of the Bible. Once readers have devoted themselves to Scripture memory in The Joshua Code, and have equipped themselves to give answers in The Jesus Code, The James Code challenges readers to give feet to their faith. Hawkins gives applicable truth from the book of James emphasizing that an effective Christian life is not about faith and works, but is about faith that works. As with The Joshua Code and The Jesus Code, all author royalties will go to Mission:Dignity, whose mission supports retired pastors and their spouses living near the poverty level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey Life is a journey (1 John 2:12-14). Our natural journey begins with conception; our spiritual journey begins with our new birth in Christ. As with all journeys there are certain principles that, if we adhere to them, will lead us to our destinations. Of course, take a wrong path and you could end up nearly anywhere. Jesus states, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me." (John 14:6) There is a journey...there is a way; our relationship with Jesus is a way to our success, and having the Father is our destination (fulfilling our purpose). This book is written to help you, the new student, to learn the very principles necessary to follow Jesus fully, to come to know the Father intimately, and fulfill your destiny. The Stages Heaven is a wonderful, eternal byproduct of being born again. However, as wonderful as this is; we are born again to first see then enter the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom includes Heaven, as it is God's rule over everything everywhere, but our Journey is primarily on earth, preparing for Heaven, by seeing and entering the Journey of life to fulfill our Kingdom purpose. John the Apostle, who was closest to Jesus during his ministry in Israel, describes our Journey in three stages; children, young men and fathers (1 John 2:12-14). In brief, childhood is where we all start, and as new believers we need some things (discussed fully in this book). Some manage to know who God is, know that sins are truly forgiven; past, present and future (you belong in God's ever expanding family), and you have those wonderful benefits simply because God loves you just as you are. Thus, similar to a young child, you have a huge learning curve to prepare you for maturity and the place to learn is to be in a loving, nurturing church, where your every effort to grow is rewarded, and your multiple failures and mistakes are lovingly corrected for your benefit. Of course, there is much to learn, and your education will take you to the next stages as young men or women. The timing is up to the Holy Spirit. Young men and women also have much to learn. Again, John summarizes this as a necessity of becoming strong through the Word of God, (living and written) living in and through you, and having overcome the enemy's attempt to keep you from growing (which is His goal) once you are lost to the Kingdom of Darkness, having become a child of the light. Many ask; what must I overcome? That is as individual as your unique set of finger prints, but we are covered on the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16), more on that later...just know overcoming will happen. God is with you in it, it is normal and natural to have stuff to overcome. You are not a second class Christian if you have issues, and we all do. The final stage is Fathers. John summarizes a father as one who knows the Father; His will, His ways, His voice, His calling, etc. In other words, they are mature enough to father children and guide young men and women toward their maturity. Please note, maturity is the goal presented in the Bible as holiness, not flawless perfection. That we will never obtain this side of Heaven, but maturity; yes indeed! Of course, you must choose to take the journey and after being born again (and hopefully soon, if not already), baptized in water and filled with the Holy Spirit. This book is designed to help you lay a solid, biblical foundation for the early stages of your Christian life. So, get ready, get set, go! Dr. Stan DeKoven
