Book excerpt: Increasing the resolution of radar imaging and ground moving target indicator (GMTI) systems puts a stress on both hardware and processing limitations. Hardware must be able to handle the transfer of the large amounts of data generated. Additionally, the processing must be robust to any heterogeneity of the data that is introduced by collecting returns from large swaths. This dissertation presents system architectures and knowledge-aided processing techniques to combat the large data rates and data heterogeneity. Ground moving target indicator radar techniques for airborne platforms require spatial and Doppler signal diversity for separating the returns of moving targets from the returns of ground clutter. The traditional use of multiple receive antennas for jointly imaging a scene and detecting moving objects is prohibited by the system bottleneck at the data down-link. We present a frequency division multiple access, multiple-transmit single-receive radar architecture, with associated waveform design and data processing procedure. The proposed approach is demonstrated to jointly provide imaging and GMTI modalities while maintaining the data rate to that of a single antenna imaging system. Heterogeneity of the radar backscatter data degrades detection performance by biasing statistical parameters estimated from the data. A GMTI processing technique, known as space-time adaptive processing (STAP), requires estimation of the space-time covariance of the clutter for use in a generalized likelihood ratio test. Consequently, the performance of STAP is related to the quality of the estimated clutter covariance matrix; however, in practice it is common for the data to be limited, contaminated, and heterogeneous. In this dissertation, we introduce and evaluate two estimators for the clutter covariance and a purely Bayesian detection scheme. A Bayesian model is postulated for the angle/Doppler scene to incorporate approximate prior knowledge of the terrain height and the platform kinematics. Posterior probabilities computed using the model are then used to either estimate a covariance matrix or directly report posterior probabilities of the presence of a target. The approach is a novel means for incorporating operational knowledge into GMTI processing and admits low-complexity algorithmic implementation via recent advances in Bayesian message passing algorithms. In the second covariance estimator, a regularized shrinkage approach is proposed, whereby prior knowledge is expressed through an elastic net regularization penalty on a minimum expected squared error estimation cost. The regularized shrinkage estimator is shown to coincide with a minimax robust covariance estimator and offers simplicity in modeling and computation that may facilitate use by practitioners. In the third approach, the Bayesian model is augmented to jointly estimate calibration parameters for unknown antenna phases and detect moving targets. The performances of the proposed estimators and detectors are evaluated using the KASSPER I dataset. We conclude that the proposed approaches extend the state-of-the-art to provide reliable detection performance when the training data is limited to a number of range bins less than the rank of the true covariance matrix. Further, when presented no training data, the Bayesian approach is shown to maintain performance using only the data under test. Finally, the purely Bayesian detection approach, when combined with antenna calibration, is observed to provide enhanced resolution, allowing reliable detection of multiple targets within a single range bin not achievable with traditional STAP.

Book excerpt: Based on a detailed analysis of the signal model of the moving target, this thesis focuses on the theories and applications of ground moving target indicator (GMTI) and ground moving target imaging (GMTIm) algorithms in synthetic aperture radar/ ground moving target indicator (SAR/GMTI mode), wide-area surveillance ground moving target indication (WAS-GMTI) mode and frequency modulated continuous wave synthetic aperture radar (FMCW SAR) systems. The proposed algorithms can not only indicate and image fast-moving targets, but are also effective in the context of slow-moving target processing. The system design scheme combines the mechanical scanning mode and the airborne SAR system, while the azimuth moving target indication algorithm employs the additional range walk migration induced by FMCW SAR systems. In addition, the non-ideal errors that deteriorate the performance of GMTIm algorithms in real SAR data processing are discussed, and suitable compensation methods are provided.>

Book excerpt: In the second part of the dissertation, the effect of phase noise on space-time adaptive processing in general, and spatial processing in particular is studied. A power law model is assumed for the phase noise. It is shown that a composite model with several terms is required to properly model the phase noise. It is further shown that the phase noise has almost linear trajectories. The effect of phase noise on spatial processing is analyzed. Simulation results illustrate the effect of phase noise on degrading the performance in terms of beam pattern and receiver operating characteristics. A STAP application, in which spatial processing is performed (together with Doppler processing) over a coherent processing interval, is envisioned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, several sparsity-based methods for ground moving target indicator (GMTI) radar with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) random arrays are proposed. MIMO random arrays are large arrays that employ multiple transmitters and receivers, the positions of the transmitters and the receivers are randomly chosen. Since the resolution of the array depends on the size of the array, MIMO random arrays obtain a high resolution. However, since the positions of the sensors are randomly chosen, the array suffers from large sidelobes which may lead to an increased false alarm probability. The number of sensors of a MIMO random array required to maintain a certain level of peak sidelobes is studied. It is shown that the number of sensors scales with the logarithm of the array aperture, in contrast with a ULA where the number of elements scales linearly with the array aperture. The problem of sparse target detection given space-time observations from MIMO random arrays is presented. The observations are obtained in the presence of Gaussian colored noise of unknown covariance matrix, but for which secondary data is available for its estimation. To solve the detection problem two sparsity-based algorithms, the MP-STAP and the MBMP-STAP algorithms are proposed that utilizes knowledge of the upper bound on the number of targets. A constant false alarm rate (CFAR) sparsity based detector that does not utilize any information on the number of targets referred to as MP-CFAR and MBMP-CFAR are also developed. A performance analysis for the new CFAR detector is also derived, the metrics used to describe the performance of the detector are the probability of false alarm and the probability of detection. A grid refinement procedure is also proposed to eliminate the need for a dense grid which would increase the computational complexity significantly. Expressions for the computational complexity of the proposed CFAR detectors are derived. It is shown that the proposed CFAR detectors outperforms the popular adaptive beamformer at a modest increase in computational complexity.

Book excerpt: A novel technique for detecting, locating, and tracking moving targets from an airborne radar platform is described and analyzed. The technique uses the generally dissimilar linear doppler frequency modulated signals from moving targets and stationary ground clutter. A matched filter processor is defined and its resolution and ambiguity properties studied as function processor parameters. Sub-clutter visibility of the processor is then determined. Two techniques for digitally implementing the processor are discussed and the computational efficiencies briefly analyzed. Finally, target angular position can be determined using phase monopulse. It is then shown that target velocity--both ground speed and target heading--can be determined from radar observables. (Author).

Book excerpt: A technique is presented for assigning the number and values of a set of transversal digital filter weights used with a moving target indicator filter to remove clutter. The approach involves a tradeoff between the amount of clutter rejection and useable bandwidth over which a moving target indicator filter satisfactorily passes a doppler signal; i.e., a specified detection probability is met or exceeded. The useable bandwidth is enhanced by an integrator which sums the B outputs from an N-tap, fixed window moving target indicator filter during a beam dwell of NB pulses. The procedure is applicable to any moving target indicator radar which employs a transversal moving target indicator filter and a reasonable number of returns/beam dwell. The narrow-band clutter example (Gaussian power spectrum, sigma = 5 Hz) indicates an improvement in useable bandwidth from the 62% achievable with 16 outputs from a conventional three-pulse canceller to 80.8% for five outputs from a nine-tap Chebyshev filter, while only reducing the clutter rejection from 92 to 69 dB.

Book excerpt: Conventional along track interferometric synthetic aperture radar, ATI-SAR, approaches can detect targets with very low radial speeds, but their false alarm rate is too high to be used in ground moving target indication radars. The report proposed a dual-threshold approach that combines the conventional interferometric phase detection and the SAR image amplitude detection in order to reduce the false alarm rate. The concept and performance of the dual-threshold approach were illustrated using the Jet Propulsion Laboratory AirSAR ATI data. A simple two-dimensional blind calibration procedure was proposed to correct the group phase shift induced by the platform's crab angle. MATLAB programs for demonstrating the proposed approach were included.
