One significant consequence of the electronic coulomb interactions are spin correlations. In the insulating phases of the layered cuprates, where the antibonding band due to Cu 3d(subscript x)2 - {sub y}2-O 2p{sub {sigma}} hybridization in the CuO2 planes is half filled, long-range antiferromagnetic order is observed. As the layers are doped with holes, the Neel order is rapidly destroyed, but dynamical antiferromagnetic correlations survive. In this paper, I will review some inelastic neutron scattering studies of the spin fluctuations in metallic YBa2Cu3O{sub 6+x}. The paper is organized as follows. In the first section I briefly discuss some background information concerning the phase diagram and spin waves in the insulating phase. Experimental results on metallic YBa2Cu3O{sub 6+x} samples are presented in the second section. The interpretation of these results and their relationship to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies and to theory are discussed in the final section.

Book excerpt: The phenomenon of superconductivity - after its discovery in metals such as mercury, lead, zinc, etc. by Kamerlingh-Onnes in 19]] - has attracted many scientists. Superconductivity was described in a very satisfactory manner by the model proposed by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer, and by the extensions proposed by Abrikosov, Gorkov and Eliashberg. Relations were established between superconductivity and the fundamental properties of solids, resulting in a possible upper limit of the critical temperature at about 23 K. The breakthrough that revolutionized the field was made in 1986 by Bednorz and Muller with the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in layered copper-oxide perovskites. Today the record in transition temperature is 133 K for a Hg based cuprate system. The last decade has not only seen a revolution in the size of the critical temperature, but also in the myriads of research groups that entered the field. In addition, high-temperature superconductivity became a real interdisciplinary topic and brought together physicists, chemists and materials scientists who started to investigate the new compounds with almost all the available experimental techniques and theoretical methods. As a consequence we have witnessed an avalanche of publications which has never occurred in any field of science so far and which makes it difficult for the individual to be thoroughly informed about the relevant results and trends. Neutron scattering has outstanding properties in the elucidation of the basic properties of high-temperature superconductors.

Book excerpt: We review neutron scattering measurements performed on two disparate reentrant spin glass systems: the magnetic insulator Eu(subscript x)Sr/sub 1-x/S and the metallic alloy Fe/sub 1-x/Al(subscript x). We show that the magnetic behavior in the two is very similar and can be explained in terms of random field effects which arise when ferromagnetic and spin glass order parameters are coupled together.

Book excerpt: This book studies the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of, as well as magnetic excitations in, high-temperature BaFe2-xNixAs2 superconductors using neutron diffraction and neutron spectroscopic methods. It describes the precise determination of the phase diagram of BaFe2-xNixAs2, which demonstrates strong magnetoelastic coupling and avoided quantum criticality driven by short-range incommensurate antiferromagnetic order, showing cluster spin glass behavior. It also identifies strong nematic spin correlations in the tetragonal state of uniaxial strained BaFe2-xNixAs2. The nematic correlations have similar temperature and doping dependence as resistivity anisotropy in detwinned samples, which suggests that they are intimately connected. Lastly, it investigates doping evolution of magnetic excitations in overdoped BaFe2-xNixAs2 and discusses the links with superconductivity. This book includes detailed neutron scattering results on BaFe2-xNixAs2 and an introduction to neutron scattering techniques, making it a useful guide for readers pursuing related research.

Book excerpt: The proceedings provide a topical survey of the static and dynamical magnetic properties of condensed matter studied by neutron scattering which has been the key technique in this field for a long time. The static aspects deal with the determination of long-range ordered spin structures and magnetization densities. The dynamic aspects concentrate on the determination of magnetic excitations such as spin waves and crystal-field transitions. The use of polarized-neutron techniques is particularly emphasized. All these topics are thoroughly introduced, methodically discussed, and highlighted with recent experimental results obtained for a vast variety of magnetic materials (e.g., strongly correlated electron systems, multilayers, nanocrystals, molecular complexes, etc.) by acknowledged experts. Other experimental methods (x-ray scattering, muon spin rotation) in the study of magnetism are compared to neutron scattering.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the results of resonant and non-resonant x-ray scattering experiments demonstrating the control of collective ordering phenomena in epitaxial nickel-oxide and copper-oxide based superlattices. Three outstanding results are reported: (1) LaNiO3-LaAlO3 superlattices with fewer than three consecutive NiO2 layers exhibit a novel spiral spin density wave, whereas superlattices with thicker nickel-oxide layer stacks remain paramagnetic. The magnetic transition is thus determined by the dimensionality of the electron system. The polarization plane of the spin density wave can be tuned by epitaxial strain and spatial confinement of the conduction electrons. (2) Further experiments on the same system revealed an unusual structural phase transition controlled by the overall thickness of the superlattices. The transition between uniform and twin-domain states is confined to the nickelate layers and leaves the aluminate layers unaffected. (3) Superlattices based on the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 exhibit an incommensurate charge density wave order that is stabilized by heterointerfaces. These results suggest that interfaces can serve as a powerful tool to manipulate the interplay between spin order, charge order, and superconductivity in cuprates and other transition metal oxides.

Book excerpt: The lattice dynamics and structural properties were measured in the ferroelectrics Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 and Pb(Zn1/3Nb 2/3)O3. Relaxor ferroelectrics have attracted much attention recently due to their exceptional piezoelectric properties. Despite the previous belief that these two materials are very different, the lattice dynamics are found to be nearly identical. The main difference between the two materials is the presence of a large near-surface region in Pb(Zn1/3Nb 2/3)O3 which undergoes a well defined structural transition. The relaxor transition can be interpreted in terms of a random field model where the appropriate universality class is the three-dimensional Heisenberg model with cubic anisotropy. The random field model can be further applied to reconcile previous apparent conflicting interpretations of the lattice dynamics.Neutron scattering is an important tool in studying the structure, lattice vibrations, and spin dynamics in materials. Neutron elastic and inelastic scattering was used in this work to investigate the fluctuations and the structure in the YBa2CuO6+x superconductor as well as the relaxor ferroelectrics Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O 3 and Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3. The spin fluctuations in the YBa2Cu3O6+x superconductor were studies for x in the underdoped region with x = 0.5 (Tc = 59 K). YBa2Cu 3O6.5 has good structural properties with well ordered oxygen chains. This provides a unique opportunity to study the spin fluctuations in a high-temperature superconductor in the presence of minimal structural disorder. The spin response in the YBa2Cu3O6.5 superconductor has been investigated using both time-of-flight and triple-axis spectrometers up to energy transfers of about 110 meV. The spin spectrum in YBa2Cu3O6.5 is dominated by a strong resonance at 33 meV. The low-energy scattering is characterized by one-dimensional incommensurate scattering with incommensurate peaks displaced along [100] direction. The high-energy fluctuations in the range from ho = 40--100 meV are qualitatively similar to the linear spin-waves measured in the insulator.

Book excerpt: The study of magnetic spin structures at nanometer length scales and their dynamics is of both fundamental and technological importance. X-rays and neutrons are penetrating probes that are suitable for studying these in the bulk and the interfaces of the materials. In this thesis, the magnetic domain dynamics are studied by resonant soft x-ray scattering together with x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. The domain fluctuations reveal when the temperature is close to the phase transition temperature. We find the domain wall dynamics in an antiferromagnet corresponds to a collective motion of spins and exhibit some universal features associated with the jamming behavior in many jammed soft condensed matter systems. We also discuss about the utilization of polarized neutron reflectometry to study the interfacial spin structure in an exchange biased bilayer. The magnetization profiles are obtained which show that some spins are not completely reversible when the magnetic field is reversed. These spins include pinned uncompensated spins in the antiferromagnet and the interfacial spins exchange coupled to those spins. A previously established model was found to reproduce the magnetization profile observed. Finally, we carried out a grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering experiment on an optical grating as a way to test the Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA). DWBA is briefly reviewed and we used it to calculate the scattering intensity of the system.

The former represents a continuous planar rotational symmetry corresponding to the SO(2) symmetry, while the latter is a discrete symmetry associated with the Z2 symmetry. Depending on which measurements are performed, the critical behavior of the system can belong to either SO(2) or Z2 universality classes with two distinct critical temperatures; one is associated with the spontaneous breaking of the Z2 symmetry, and the other corresponds to a topological order (BKT transition) due to vortex- antivortex binding. The former occurs at a slightly higher temperature than the latter. Neutron scattering measurements show a signature of the BKT transition, while specific heat measurements show a feature of the 2D Ising transition. Above TN, the in-plane spin gap vanishes, and the system retains the SO(2) symmetry when measured with neutron scattering. On the other hand, specific heat measurements show a feature of the 2D Ising transition, since the underlying symmetry of the spin Hamiltonian is the time-reversal or Z2 symmetry.

Book excerpt: High-Temperature Cuprate Superconductors provides an up-to-date and comprehensive review of the properties of these fascinating materials. The essential properties of high-temperature cuprate superconductors are reviewed on the background of their theoretical interpretation. The experimental results for structural, magnetic, thermal, electric, optical and lattice properties of various cuprate superconductors are presented with respect to relevant theoretical models. A critical comparison of various theoretical models involving strong electron correlations, antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, phonons and excitons provides a background for understanding of the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. Recent achievements in their applications are also reviewed. A large number of illustrations and tables gives valuable information for specialists. A text-book level presentation with formulation of a general theory of strong-coupling superconductivity will help students and researches to consolidate their knowledge of this remarkable class of materials.
