Book excerpt: All of the copper oxide superconductors contain CuO2 layers which, when insulating, exhibit strong, two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic correlations due to the unusually large superexchange interaction between nearest-neighbor Cu{sup 2+} atoms. Magnetic correlations survive, although with a reduced correlation length, even when the layers are doped with holes. A short review of neutron scattering studies of magnetic correlations and excitations in the layered cuprates is presented. 19 refs., 6 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron Scattering - Magnetic and Quantum Phenomena provides detailed coverage of the application of neutron scattering in condensed matter research. The book's primary aim is to enable researchers in a particular area to identify the aspects of their work where neutron scattering techniques might contribute, conceive the important experiments to be done, assess what is required to carry them out, write a successful proposal for one of the major user facilities, and perform the experiments under the guidance of the appropriate instrument scientist. An earlier series edited by Kurt Sköld and David L. Price, and published in the 1980s by Academic Press as three volumes in the series Methods of Experimental Physics, was very successful and remained the standard reference in the field for several years. This present work has similar goals, taking into account the advances in experimental techniques over the past quarter-century, for example, neutron reflectivity and spin-echo spectroscopy, and techniques for probing the dynamics of complex materials of technological relevance. This volume complements Price and Fernandez-Alonso (Eds.), Neutron Scattering - Fundamentals published in November 2013. Covers the application of neutron scattering techniques in the study of quantum and magnetic phenomena, including superconductivity, multiferroics, and nanomagnetism Presents up-to-date reviews of recent results, aimed at enabling the reader to identify new opportunities and plan neutron scattering experiments in their own field Provides a good balance between theory and experimental techniques Provides a complement to Price and Fernandez-Alonso (Eds.), Neutron Scattering - Fundamentals published in November 2013

Book excerpt: The phenomenon of superconductivity - after its discovery in metals such as mercury, lead, zinc, etc. by Kamerlingh-Onnes in 19]] - has attracted many scientists. Superconductivity was described in a very satisfactory manner by the model proposed by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer, and by the extensions proposed by Abrikosov, Gorkov and Eliashberg. Relations were established between superconductivity and the fundamental properties of solids, resulting in a possible upper limit of the critical temperature at about 23 K. The breakthrough that revolutionized the field was made in 1986 by Bednorz and Muller with the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in layered copper-oxide perovskites. Today the record in transition temperature is 133 K for a Hg based cuprate system. The last decade has not only seen a revolution in the size of the critical temperature, but also in the myriads of research groups that entered the field. In addition, high-temperature superconductivity became a real interdisciplinary topic and brought together physicists, chemists and materials scientists who started to investigate the new compounds with almost all the available experimental techniques and theoretical methods. As a consequence we have witnessed an avalanche of publications which has never occurred in any field of science so far and which makes it difficult for the individual to be thoroughly informed about the relevant results and trends. Neutron scattering has outstanding properties in the elucidation of the basic properties of high-temperature superconductors.

Book excerpt: The proceedings provide a topical survey of the static and dynamical magnetic properties of condensed matter studied by neutron scattering which has been the key technique in this field for a long time. The static aspects deal with the determination of long-range ordered spin structures and magnetization densities. The dynamic aspects concentrate on the determination of magnetic excitations such as spin waves and crystal-field transitions. The use of polarized-neutron techniques is particularly emphasized. All these topics are thoroughly introduced, methodically discussed, and highlighted with recent experimental results obtained for a vast variety of magnetic materials (e.g., strongly correlated electron systems, multilayers, nanocrystals, molecular complexes, etc.) by acknowledged experts. Other experimental methods (x-ray scattering, muon spin rotation) in the study of magnetism are compared to neutron scattering.

Book excerpt: This book studies the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of, as well as magnetic excitations in, high-temperature BaFe2-xNixAs2 superconductors using neutron diffraction and neutron spectroscopic methods. It describes the precise determination of the phase diagram of BaFe2-xNixAs2, which demonstrates strong magnetoelastic coupling and avoided quantum criticality driven by short-range incommensurate antiferromagnetic order, showing cluster spin glass behavior. It also identifies strong nematic spin correlations in the tetragonal state of uniaxial strained BaFe2-xNixAs2. The nematic correlations have similar temperature and doping dependence as resistivity anisotropy in detwinned samples, which suggests that they are intimately connected. Lastly, it investigates doping evolution of magnetic excitations in overdoped BaFe2-xNixAs2 and discusses the links with superconductivity. This book includes detailed neutron scattering results on BaFe2-xNixAs2 and an introduction to neutron scattering techniques, making it a useful guide for readers pursuing related research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron-electron correlations appear to play an important role in determining many properties of the copper oxide superconductors. One significant consequence of the electronic coulomb interactions are spin correlations. In the insulating phases of the layered cuprates, where the antibonding band due to Cu 3d(subscript x)2 - {sub y}2-O 2p{sub {sigma}} hybridization in the CuO2 planes is half filled, long-range antiferromagnetic order is observed. As the layers are doped with holes, the Neel order is rapidly destroyed, but dynamical antiferromagnetic correlations survive. In this paper, I will review some inelastic neutron scattering studies of the spin fluctuations in metallic YBa2Cu3O{sub 6+x}. The paper is organized as follows. In the first section I briefly discuss some background information concerning the phase diagram and spin waves in the insulating phase. Experimental results on metallic YBa2Cu3O{sub 6+x} samples are presented in the second section. The interpretation of these results and their relationship to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies and to theory are discussed in the final section.

Book excerpt: Neutron diffraction experiments on europium telluride/lead telluride super-lattice systems reveal pronounced correlations between the antiferromagnetic EuTe layers. The results from an assortment of varying experimental conditions (applied magnetic field, temperature, etc.) and their relevance to the physical mechanism underlying this striking phenomena are discussed. Stochastic computer simulations are compared to this real data to examine the effects of varying the neutron coherence length and the amount of correlations in the model sample. There are rising theoretical efforts to determine the physical mechanism causing the observed correlations and a laconic overview of current theories in interlayer coupling is given herein. The investigated structures do not exhibit perfect correlations between the magnetic layers but most samples clearly show correlation effects. The description of these partial correlations, characterized by an order parameter p, is examined and a straightforward method for determining p is derived.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The techniques of magnetic neutron and photon scattering provide information on the electronic properties of materials that is obtainable in no other way. With both techniques information on an atomic scale is obtained on the spatial and temporal developments of the spin and current densities which are fundamental quantities in a basic understanding of magnetic phenomena. To date most magnetic scattering studies have used neutron beams, and the use of photon beams is, relatively speaking, in its infancy. This book is the first monograph devoted to the theory required for a full interpretation of magnetic scattering experiments. It is designed to meet the needs of postgraduates and researchers new to the techniques. At the same time, the requirements of theoretical chemists and physicists are catered for through chapters that present the basic formalism in detail. Special features of the book include extensive tables of quantities that occur frequently in applications of theory, and a number of worked examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides the first extensive treatment of magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The theoretical background required to compute magnetic SANS cross sections and correlation functions related to long-wavelength magnetization structures is laid out. The concepts are scrutinized based on the discussion of experimental neutron data. Regarding prior background knowledge, some familiarity with the basic magnetic interactions and phenomena as well as scattering theory is desired. Besides exposing the different origins of magnetic SANS, and furnishing the basics of the magnetic SANS technique in early chapters, a large part of the book is devoted to a comprehensive treatment of the continuum theory of micromagnetics, as it is relevant for the study of the elastic magnetic SANS cross section. Analytical expressions for the magnetization Fourier components allow to highlight the essential features of magnetic SANS and to analyze experimental data both in reciprocal, as well as in real space. Later chapters provide an overview on the magnetic SANS of nanoparticles and so-called complex systems (e.g., ferrofluids, magnetic steels, spin glasses and amorphous magnets). It is this subfield where major progress is expected to be made in the coming years, mainly via the increased usage of numerical micromagnetic simulations (Chapter 7), which is a very promising approach for the understanding of the magnetic SANS from systems exhibiting nanoscale spin inhomogeneity.

This book was released on 2007-03-20 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, a general theme in the study of high-temperature superconductors has been to test the BCS theory and its predictions against new data. At the same time, this process has engendered new physics, new materials, and new theoretical frameworks. Remarkable advances have occurred in sample quality and in single crystals, in hole and electron doping in the development of sister compounds with lower transition temperatures, and in instruments to probe structure and dynamics. Handbook of High-Temperature Superconductvity is a comprehensive and in-depth treatment of both experimental and theoretical methodologies by the the world's top leaders in the field. The Editor, Nobel Laureate J. Robert Schrieffer, and Associate Editor James S. Brooks, have produced a unified, coherent work providing a global view of high-temperature superconductivity covering the materials, the relationships with heavy-fermion and organic systems, and the many formidable challenges that remain.
