Book excerpt: This report represents the culmination of over nine years of research activity in the study of superconducting and magnetically ordered materials using the muon spin rotation ([mu]SR) and neutron scattering techniques. Because all the activities that took place up until March 1996 have been covered in previous annual reports, this final report includes only a brief overview of activities prior to that date, and concentrates on the period from March 1996 through August 1997. The primary activity undertaken in this project has been studies of high-temperature superconductors and their close chemical relatives with the[mu]SR technique. These experiments extend from early work done with a relatively primitive muon beam at the AGS of Brookhaven National Laboratory and large polycrystalline samples of the earliest known high-[Tc] materials to studies of very small high-purity single crystals of the best high-[Tc] materials currently available using the highest quality surface muon beams and specially-designed low-background spectrometers at the Tri-University Meson Facility (TRIUMF) in the past three years. During the period since the last annual report five[mu]SR experiments were done at TRIUMF with DOE support. A study of single-crystal high-temperature superconductors was done in July 1996. A study of the quasicrystal materials Gd[sub 8]Mg[sub 42]Zn[sub 50] and Tb[sub 8]Mg[sub 42]Zn[sub 50] was done by D.R. Noakes in collaboration with G.M. Kalvius of the Technical University of Munich and R. Waeppling of Uppsala University during the first week of December 1996. During the second week of December 1996 a study of the cryocrystals CH[sub 4] and CF[sub 4] was done by D.R. Noakes in collaboration with S. Storchak of Moscow State University and J.H. Brewer of the University of British Columbia. A study of high-[Tc] superconductors was done at TRIUMF during the third week of December 1996 by C.E. Stronach and D.R. Noakes.

Book excerpt: The proceedings provide a topical survey of the static and dynamical magnetic properties of condensed matter studied by neutron scattering which has been the key technique in this field for a long time. The static aspects deal with the determination of long-range ordered spin structures and magnetization densities. The dynamic aspects concentrate on the determination of magnetic excitations such as spin waves and crystal-field transitions. The use of polarized-neutron techniques is particularly emphasized. All these topics are thoroughly introduced, methodically discussed, and highlighted with recent experimental results obtained for a vast variety of magnetic materials (e.g., strongly correlated electron systems, multilayers, nanocrystals, molecular complexes, etc.) by acknowledged experts. Other experimental methods (x-ray scattering, muon spin rotation) in the study of magnetism are compared to neutron scattering.

Book excerpt: Neutron scattering is arguably the most powerful technique available for looking inside materials and seeing what the atoms are doing. This textbook provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the many different ways neutrons are being used to investigate the behaviour of atoms and molecules in bulk matter. It is written in a pedagogical style, and includes many examples and exercises. Every year, thousands of experiments are performed at neutron scattering facilities around the world, exploring phenomena in physics, chemistry, materials science, as well as in interdisciplinary areas such as biology, materials engineering, and cultural heritage. This book fulfils a need for a modern and pedagogical treatment of the principles behind the various different neutron techniques, in order to provide scientists with the essential formal tools to design their experiments and interpret the results. The book will be of particular interest to researchers using neutrons to study the atomic-scale structure and dynamics in crystalline solids, simple liquids and molecular fluids by diffraction techniques, including small-angle scattering and reflectometry, and by spectroscopic methods, ranging from conventional techniques for inelastic and quasielastic scattering to neutron spin-echo and Compton scattering. A comprehensive treatment of magnetic neutron scattering is given, including the many and diverse applications of polarized neutrons.

The unique facilities at the ILL for both high-energy and low-energy neutron instrumentation made the experiments possible. The measurements consisted of two basic types. The first of these is the study of the nature of spin fluctuations in high-{Tc} materials. This work is fundamental to the mechanism that is responsible for the high-transition temperatures. The second consisted of experiments on the flux lattice in high-temperature superconductors. The flux lattice has interesting physics in its own right and is important in understanding the current-carrying capability of superconductors.

The book's primary aim is to enable researchers in a particular area to identify the aspects of their work where neutron scattering techniques might contribute, conceive the important experiments to be done, assess what is required to carry them out, write a successful proposal for one of the major user facilities, and perform the experiments under the guidance of the appropriate instrument scientist. An earlier series edited by Kurt Sköld and David L. Price, and published in the 1980s by Academic Press as three volumes in the series Methods of Experimental Physics, was very successful and remained the standard reference in the field for several years. This present work has similar goals, taking into account the advances in experimental techniques over the past quarter-century, for example, neutron reflectivity and spin-echo spectroscopy, and techniques for probing the dynamics of complex materials of technological relevance. This volume complements Price and Fernandez-Alonso (Eds.), Neutron Scattering - Fundamentals published in November 2013. Covers the application of neutron scattering techniques in the study of quantum and magnetic phenomena, including superconductivity, multiferroics, and nanomagnetism Presents up-to-date reviews of recent results, aimed at enabling the reader to identify new opportunities and plan neutron scattering experiments in their own field Provides a good balance between theory and experimental techniques Provides a complement to Price and Fernandez-Alonso (Eds.), Neutron Scattering - Fundamentals published in November 2013

Book excerpt: The lattice dynamics and structural properties were measured in the ferroelectrics Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 and Pb(Zn1/3Nb 2/3)O3. Relaxor ferroelectrics have attracted much attention recently due to their exceptional piezoelectric properties. Despite the previous belief that these two materials are very different, the lattice dynamics are found to be nearly identical. The main difference between the two materials is the presence of a large near-surface region in Pb(Zn1/3Nb 2/3)O3 which undergoes a well defined structural transition. The relaxor transition can be interpreted in terms of a random field model where the appropriate universality class is the three-dimensional Heisenberg model with cubic anisotropy. The random field model can be further applied to reconcile previous apparent conflicting interpretations of the lattice dynamics.Neutron scattering is an important tool in studying the structure, lattice vibrations, and spin dynamics in materials. Neutron elastic and inelastic scattering was used in this work to investigate the fluctuations and the structure in the YBa2CuO6+x superconductor as well as the relaxor ferroelectrics Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O 3 and Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3. The spin fluctuations in the YBa2Cu3O6+x superconductor were studies for x in the underdoped region with x = 0.5 (Tc = 59 K). YBa2Cu 3O6.5 has good structural properties with well ordered oxygen chains. This provides a unique opportunity to study the spin fluctuations in a high-temperature superconductor in the presence of minimal structural disorder. The spin response in the YBa2Cu3O6.5 superconductor has been investigated using both time-of-flight and triple-axis spectrometers up to energy transfers of about 110 meV. The spin spectrum in YBa2Cu3O6.5 is dominated by a strong resonance at 33 meV. The low-energy scattering is characterized by one-dimensional incommensurate scattering with incommensurate peaks displaced along [100] direction. The high-energy fluctuations in the range from ho = 40--100 meV are qualitatively similar to the linear spin-waves measured in the insulator.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes neutron scattering experiments on strongly correlated systems exhibiting a range of emergent phenomena: antiferromagnetism, charge order, superconductivity and multiferroicity. I have examined the La_{2}CoO_{4} compound which is a Mott insulator and orders antiferromagnetically near room temperature. The La_{2}CoO_{4} sample was studied using spherical neutron polarimetry and I present magnetic structure models to describe the two antiferromagnetic phases of the compound. Furthermore, the magnetic fluctuations have been investigated using neutron time-of-flight technique. This has allowed us to extract the dominant exchange interactions in the system. More interestingly, the work on La_{2}CoO_{4} presented in this thesis provides a basis for the experimental evidence of an hourglass dispersion in La_{5/3}Sr_{1/3}CoO_{4}, previously only observed in the copper oxide based superconductors. This dispersion has been understood in terms of a stripe ordered magnetic phase and was found to be well described by a linear spin-wave model. Neutron scattering experiments were also carried out on the new iron-based high-temperature superconductors, FeSe_{x}Te_{1-x}. A range of compositions were studied, including both antiferromagnetically ordered and superconducting. Below the superconducting phase transition temperature, a spin resonance mode was found centred on the antiferromagnetic wavevector. This is an important feature shared by many unconventional superconductors. The spin resonance intensity was found to reflect the order parameter of the superconducting state. Polarised inelastic neutron scattering experiments have revealed a small anisotropy between the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fluctuations at the resonance. This anisotropy cannot be readily explained by the usual anisotropic terms in the Hamiltonian. This could be evidence of new physics in the FeSe_{x}Te_{1-x} superconductors. Finally, I have studied CuO - a high-temperature multiferroic. Analysis of polarised neutron diffraction experiments shows that the magnetic domain population can be varied using an externally applied electric field. This unambiguously demonstrates coupling between the magnetic and ferroelectric degrees of freedom. Using representation analysis I derive the incommensurate magnetic structure in the multiferroic phase. The origin of the magnetoelectric coupling is consistent with models based on the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.
