The first task was the investigation of gamma rays produced by high-energy charged particles and their secondaries in planetary surfaces by means of thick target bombardments. The second task was the investigation of the effects of high-energy neutrons on gamma-ray spectral features obtained with high-purity Ge-detectors. For both tasks, as a function of the funding level, the experimental work was predominantly tied to that of other researchers, whenever there was an opportunity to participate in bombardment experiments at large or small accelerators for charged particles. Book excerpt: Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation (PGNAA) systems require the use of a gamma-ray spectrometer to record the gamma-ray spectrum of an object under test and allow the determination of the object's composition. Field-portable systems, such as Idaho National Laboratory's PINS system, have used standard liquid-nitrogen-cooled high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors to perform this function. These detectors have performed very well in the past, but the requirement of liquid-nitrogen cooling limits their use to areas where liquid nitrogen is readily available or produced on-site. Also, having a relatively large volume of liquid nitrogen close to the detector can impact some assessments, possibly leading to a false detection of explosives or other nitrogen-containing chemical. Use of a mechanically-cooled HPGe detector is therefore very attractive for PGNAA applications where nitrogen detection is critical or where liquid-nitrogen logistics are problematic. Mechanically-cooled HPGe detectors constructed from p-type germanium, such as Ortec's trans-SPEC, have been commercially available for several years. In order to assess whether these detectors would be suitable for use in a fielded PGNAA system, Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has been performing a number of tests of the resistance of mechanically-cooled HPGe detectors to neutron damage. These detectors have been standard commercially-available p-type HPGe detectors as well as prototype n-type HPGe detectors. These tests compare the performance of these different detector types as a function of crystal temperature and incident neutron fluence on the crystal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present a state of art summary of current knowledge of methods of assessment of radionuclides in the terrestrial and marine environments. It cover the traditional methods of radioactivity measurements such as radiometrics techniques, but also recent developments in the mass spectrometry sector. The book starts with a short preface introducing the subject of the book, summarising content and philosophy of the book, as well as the most important historical achievements. The scientific topics are introduced by description of sampling methods, optimisation of sampling sites and sampling frequency. The recent developments in radiochemical separation methods using chromatography resins for the treatment of actinides, transuranics and other groups of radioelements are also described. No other book is available covering all aspects of environmental radioactivity measurements, although remarkable progress has been made in detection techniques over the last ten years. At present the new methods enable to carry out investigations which were not possible before, either because of lack of sensitivity or because of the fact that they required too large samples.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neutron radiative-capture cross section of 76Ge was measured between 0.4 and 14.8 MeV using the activation technique. Germanium samples with the isotopic abundance of ~86% 76Ge and ~14% 74Ge used in the 0[nu][beta][beta] searches by the GERDA and Majorana Collaborations were irradiated with monoenergetic neutrons produced at eleven energies via the 3H(p, n)3He, 2H(d, n)3He and 3H(d, n)4He reactions. Previously, data existed only at thermal energies and at 14 MeV. As a by-product, capture cross-section data were also obtained for 74Ge at neutron energies below 8 MeV. Indium and gold foils were irradiated simultaneously for neutron fluence determination. High-resolution [gamma]-ray spectroscopy was used to determine the [gamma]-ray activity of the daughter nuclei of interest. For the 76Ge total capture cross section the present data are in good agreement with the TENDL-2013 model calculations and the ENDF/B-VII. 1 evaluations, while for the 74Ge(n, [gamma])75Ge reaction, the present data are about a factor of two larger than predicted. It was found that the 74Ge(n, [gamma])75Ge yield in the High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors used by the GERDA and Majorana Collaborations is only about a factor of two smaller than the 76Ge(n, [gamma])77Ge yield due to the larger cross section of the former reaction.

It presents information on compact instruments with high neutron yield to be used for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis in combination with high count rate spectrometers. Traditional NGs have been shown to be effective for applications including borehole logging, homeland security, nuclear medicine and the on-line analysis of aluminium, coal and cement. Pulsed fast thermal neutron analysis, as well as tagged and timed neutron analysis, are additional techniques which can be applied using NG. Furthermore, NG can effectively be used for elemental analysis and is also effective for analysis of hidden materials by neutron radiography. Useful guidelines for developing NG based research laboratories are also provided in this publication.

Book excerpt: Precision measurements of 238U(n, n'g) and 235,238U(n,2ng) partial cross sections have been performed at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) to improve crucial data for the National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) Stockpile Stewardship Program. Accurate neutron-induced reaction cross-section data are required for many practical applications, including nuclear energy and reactor technology, nuclear transmutation, and explosive nuclear devices. Due to the cessation of underground nuclear testing in the early 1990s, understanding of the performance of nuclear devices is increasingly dependent on precise model calculations which are, in turn, themselves reliant on accurate reaction data to serve as benchmarks for model codes. Direct measurement of (n, n') and (n,2n) reaction cross sections for uranium is extremely difficult due to large neutron background from fission and very close nuclear level spacing. Previous direct measurements of the cross sections are incomplete and/or discrepant over the energy range of interest. However, the (n, n'g) and (n,2ng) partial gamma-ray cross-section data obtained in the present work can be combined with model calculations to infer total (n, n') and (n,2n) reaction-channel cross sections. A pulsed and monoenergetic neutron beam was used in combination with high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy to measure these partial cross sections for incident neutron energies between 5 and 14 MeV. Gamma-ray yields were measured with high-purity germanium (HPGe) clover and planar detectors. Neutron fluxes were determined from the well-measured 2+ -> 0+ transition in 56Fe to be on the order of 10^4 n/cm^2/s. Detector efficiency and attenuation of gamma rays in the target were simulated using the MCNPX Monte-Carlo radiation transport code. Measured partial cross sections were compared with previous measurements and calculations from GNASH and TALYS Hauser-Feshbach statistical-model codes. Results are generally in good agreement with existing data and provide cross-section data for transitions in energy regions where none previously existed. Total reaction-channel cross sections are inferred from statistical-model calculations and compared with existing direct measurement data.

Book excerpt: Measurements of discrete gamma-ray spectra from neutron-induced reactions on a Be0 sample have been performed using the broad-spectrum neutron spallation source of the WNR facility at LANSCE. Incident neutron energies were determined by the time-of-flight technique. Two high-purity Ge detectors were used to detect gamma rays in the energy range from 0.150 to 9.0 MeV. Spectra were measured at seven angles. Absolute gamma-ray production cross sections were delermined from the measured neutron fluence and detector efficiencies. A new evaluation of the reaction cross sections has been performed based on this data. GNASH model calculations were performed for 20

Book excerpt: The emission of [gamma] rays from neutron-bound and neutron-unbound states in 95Mo, populated in the 94Mo(d, p) reaction, has been investigated. Charged particles and [gamma] radiation were detected with arrays of annular silicon and Clover-type high-purity Germanium detectors, respectively. Utilizing p-[gamma] and p-[gamma]-[gamma] coincidences, the 95Mo level scheme was greatly enhanced with 102 new transitions and 43 new states. It agrees well with shell model calculations for excitation energies below H" MeV. From p-[gamma] coincidence data, a new method for the determination of spins of discrete levels is proposed. The method exploits the suppression of high-angular momentum neutron emission from levels with high spins populated in the (d, p) reaction above the neutron separation energy. As a result, spins for almost all 95Mo levels below 2 MeV (and for a few levels above) have been determined with this method.

It is imperative to accurately determine the neutron spectrum in order to assess the secondary cancer risks posed to the patients by these neutrons. Instruments like the Nested Neutron Spectrometer (NNS) can be used to measure the neutron fluence spectra but the active neutron detector in the spectrometer may be inaccurate when the neutron fluence rate is high due to pulse pileup. Wedeveloped a passive NNS with gold foils that may be operated in high fluence rate environments without suffering from pulse pileup. The passive NNS was used to measure the neutron fluence spectrum at 100 cm from isocentre, along the treatment couch, that was generated by a Varian TrueBeam linac operated at 15 MV. The specific saturation activities of the irradiated gold foils were determined post-irradiation using a high purity germanium detector. To process the measured activities, the response functions of the passive NNS were required. The response functions were generated by first modelling the passive NNS, including moderator shells and gold foils, within the Geant4 v10.4 simulation environment. Simulated irradiations of monoenergetic neutrons were then performed to determine the number of (n,g) neutron capture reactions per unit neutron fluence as a function of neutron energy (i.e. detector response). Theresponse functions generated showed that the detector response shifts to higher energies as the neutron moderator thickness increases, as expected.Using the response functions, the data were iteratively unfolded (i.e. deconvoluted) using the Maximum-Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM) algorithm to obtain the neutron fluence-rate spectrum at the location of the measurement. The spectrum had two prominent peaks: (i) a dominant peak at the fast neutron energy and (ii) a small peak at the thermal energies. This spectrum was also compared with the spectrum generated with a conventional NNS"--
