Book excerpt: To satisfy nuclear data requirements for fission-product nuclei, Hauser-Feshbach statistical calculations with preequilibrium corrections for neutron-induced reactions on isotopes of Se, Kr, Sr, Zr, Mo, Sn, Xe, and Ba between 0.001 and 20 MeV. Spherical neutron optical parameters were determined by simultaneous fits to resonance data and total cross sections. Isospin coefficients appearing in the optical potentials were determined through analysis of the behavior of s- and p-wave strengths as a function of mass for a given Z. Gamma-ray strength functions, determined through fits to stable-isotope capture data, were used in the calculation of capture cross sections and gamma-ray competition to particle emission. The resulting (n, .gamma.), (n, n'), (n,2n), and (n,3n) cross sections, the secondary neutron emission spectra, and angular distributions calculated for 19 fission products will be averaged to provide a resulting ENDF-type fission-product neutronics file. 11 references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multistep Hauser-Feshbach calculations with preequilibrium corrections were made for neutron-induced reactions on yttrium and zirconium isotopes between 0.001 and 20 MeV. Recently new neutron cross-section data have been measured for unstable isotopes of these elements. These data, along with results from charged-particle simulation of neutron reactions, provide unique opportunities under which to test nuclear-model techniques and parameters in this mass region. A complete and consistent analysis of varied neutron reaction types using input parameters determined independently from additional neutron and charged-particle data. The overall agreement between calculations and a wide variety of experimental results available for these nuclei leads to increased confidence in calculated cross sections made where data are incomplete or lacking. 75 references.

Book excerpt: Although the fission of heavy nuclei was discovered over 75 years ago, many problems and questions still remain to be addressed and answered. The reader will be presented with an old, but persistent problem of this field: The contradiction between Prompt Fission Neutron (PFN) spectra measured with differential (microscopic) experiments and integral (macroscopic and benchmark) experiments (the Micro-Macro problem). The difference in average energy is rather small ~3% but it is stable and we cannot explain the difference due to experimental uncertainties. Can we measure the PFN spectrum with high accuracy? How may we compare results of different experiments to provide better accuracy? Are our traditional theoretical models correct? What can be done to solve the Micro-Macro problem in future? These questions are discussed in this monograph for the reader. The current work will be of interest to graduate students and researchers, particularly those working in nuclear and neutron physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Fission and Neutron-Induced Fission Cross-Sections is the first volume in a series on Neutron Physics and Nuclear Data in Science and Technology. This volume serves the purpose of providing a thorough description of the many facets of neutron physics in different fields of nuclear applications. This book also attempts to bridge the communication gap between experts involved in the experimental and theoretical studies of nuclear properties and those involved in the technological applications of nuclear data. This publication will be invaluable to those interested in studying nuclear fission and neutron-induced fission cross-sections, as well as other relevant concepts.

This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fast-neutron capture cross sections of elemental rhodium, palladium, neodymium, and samarium were measured in the energy range 0.5 to 4.0 MeV relative to the standard capture cross section of gold. A large liquid scintillator and the time-of-flight technique were used in these measurements. Experimental data are rare or non-existent in this energy range and evaluations differ substantially, with a factor of 5 being common. The present data were used together with other experimental data and nuclear model calculations in order to provide a consistent set of isotopic and elemental capture cross sections. 5 figures.

Book Synopsis Application of Nuclear Models to Neutron Nuclear Cross Section Calculations by :
Download or read book Application of Nuclear Models to Neutron Nuclear Cross Section Calculations written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear theory is used increasingly to supplement and extend the nuclear data base that is available for applied studies. Areas where theoretical calculations are most important include the determination of neutron cross sections for unstable fission products and transactinide nuclei in fission reactor or nuclear waste calculations and for meeting the extensive dosimetry, activation, and neutronic data needs associated with fusion reactor development, especially for neutron energies above 14 MeV. Considerable progress has been made in the use of nuclear models for data evaluation and, particularly, in the methods used to derive physically meaningful parameters for model calculations. Theoretical studies frequently involve use of spherical and deformed optical models, Hauser-Feshbach statistical theory, preequilibrium theory, direct-reaction theory, and often make use of gamma-ray strength function models and phenomenological (or microscopic) level density prescriptions. The development, application, and limitations of nuclear models for data evaluation are discussed, with emphasis on the 0.1 to 50 MeV energy range. (91 references).
