Book excerpt: In the SNO data from its salt run, probably the most significant result is the consistency with the previous results without assuming the 8B energy spectrum. In addition, they have excluded the maximal mixing at a very high confidence level. This has an important implication on the double beta decay experiments. For the inverted or degenerate mass spectrum, we find barm_nu_ee bar> 0.013 eV at 95percent CL, and the next generation experiments can discriminate Majorana and Dirac neutrinos if the invertedor degenerate mass spectrum will be confirmed by the improvements in cosmology, tritium data beta decay, or long-baseline oscillation experiments.

It is already now probing the TeV scale, on which new physics should manifest itself according to theoretical expectations. Only in the early 1980s was it known that double beta decay yields information on the Majorana mass of the exchanged neutrino. At present, the sharpest bound for the electron neutrino mass arises from this process. It is only in the last 10 years that the much more far-reaching potential of double beta decay has been discovered. Today, the potential of double beta decay includes a broad range of topics that are equally relevant to particle physics and astrophysics, such as masses of heavy neutrinos, of sneutrinos, as SUSY models, compositeness, leptoquarks, left-right symmetric models, and tests of Lorentz symmetry and equivalence principle in the neutrino sector. Book excerpt: Neutrinoless double beta decay is a hypothetical type of radioactive decay in which two neutrons in the nucleus of an atom simultaneously convert into protons, emitting two electrons and no neutrinos. The observation of neutrinoless double beta decay would have significant implications for our understanding of the nature of neutrinos and the properties of matter. It would prove that neutrinos are their own antiparticles (also known as Majorana particles) and that the total lepton number is not conserved. Additionally, it would provide information on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos, which is currently unknown. The observation of neutrinoless double beta decay would also have implications for our understanding of the matter-antimatter imbalance in the universe and the possible existence of physics beyond the standard model . The discovery of radioactivity by Henri Becquerel in 1896 opened a new dimension in the field of nuclear physics. Alpha, beta and gamma rays are the relics of radioactive decays, and their emissions are governed via strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions respectively. The energy spectrum of alpha and gamma decays are discrete in nature due to the emission of a single particle. In 1914, James Chadwick reported the continuous energy spectrum of beta radiation. In order to explain this continuous spectrum, Wolfgang Pauli proposed the emission of a chargeless and massless fermion along with beta particle and called it "neutron" . On 4ᵗʰ December 1930, Pauli wrote a letter to nuclear physicsts who were going to meet a few days later in Tiibingen, Germany, "Dear Radioactive Ladies and Gentlemen, As the bearer of these lines, to whom I graciously ask you to listen, ...... I have hit upon a desperate remedy to save the "exchange theorem" of statistics and the law of conservation of energy. Namely, the possibility that in the nuclei there could exist electrically neutral particles, which I will call neutrons, that have spin and obey the exclusion principle and that further di er from light quanta in that they do not tra el with the elocity o light. he mass o the neutrons should be of the same order of magnitude as the electron mass and in any e ent not larger than 0.01 proton mass. - he continuous beta spectrum would then make sense with the assumption that in beta decay, in addition to the electron, a neutron is emitted such that the sum o the energies of neutron and electron is constant...

Book excerpt: In the last 20 years the disciplines of particle physics, astrophysics, nuclear physics and cosmology have grown together in an unprecedented way. A brilliant example is nuclear double beta decay, an extremely rare radioactive decay mode, which is one of the most exciting and important fields of research in particle physics at present and the flagship of non-accelerator particle physics. While already discussed in the 1930s, only in the 1980s was it understood that neutrinoless double beta decay can yield information on the Majorana mass of the neutrino, which has an impact on the structure of space-time. Today, double beta decay is indispensable for solving the problem of the neutrino mass spectrum and the structure of the neutrino mass matrix. The potential of double beta decay has also been extended such that it is now one of the most promising tools for probing beyond-the-standard-model particle physics, and gives access to energy scales beyond the potential of future accelerators. This book presents the breathtaking manner in which achievements in particle physics have been made from a nuclear physics process. Consisting of a 150-page highly factual overview of the field of double beta decay and a 1200-page collection of the most important original articles, the book outlines the development of double beta decay research — theoretical and experimental — from its humble beginnings until its most recent achievements, with its revolutionary consequences for the theory of particle physics. It further presents an outlook on the exciting future of the field.

Book excerpt: We report the results of a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in a 9.8 kg yr exposure of 130Te using a bolometric detector array, CUORE-0. The characteristic detector energy resolution and background level in the region of interest are 5.1 ± 0.3 keV FWHM and 0.058 ± 0.004 (stat.) ± 0:002 (syst.) counts/(keV kg yr), respectively. The median 90% C.L. lower-limit sensitivity of the experiment is 2.9 x 1024 yr and surpasses the sensitivity of previous searches. We find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 130Te and place a Bayesian lower bound on the decay half-life, T0$_1$1/2 > 2.7 x 1024 yr at 90% C.L. Combining CUORE-0 data with the 19.75 kg yr exposure of 130Te from the Cuoricino experiment we obtain T0$_1$1/2 > 4.0 x 1024 yr at 90% C.L. (Bayesian), the most stringent limit to date on this half-life. Using a range of nuclear matrix element estimates we interpret this as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, m??

This book was released on 2010 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes the approach taken in measuring two neutrino double beta decay of Cd-116 to the ground state of Sn-116 and in searching for the effective Majorana neutrino mass by placing a lower limit on the half-life for neutrinoless double beta decay of Cd-116 using the powerful technique of a combined tracking chamber and calorimeter with the NEMO-3 detector. The description of the detector, its natural background contamination, and the tools used to perform the analysis are discussed. The single electron channel was used to identify source foil contamination from [beta]-emitters and the electron-gamma channel was used to confirm the previous measurements of Tl-208 and Bi-214 contaminations in the source foil. Using these backgrounds, the two neutrino double beta decay half-life of Cd-116 was measured for the single states dominance hypothesis and the higher states dominance hypothesis. The final data set was defined to be data from Phrase One and Phase Two for the medium and low activity regions. Using 1471 days of data, the values of the half-life for the single data dominance hypothesis and the higher states dominance hypothesis were found.

Book excerpt: A search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 1°°Mo was conducted using thin Mo films and solid state Si detectors. The experiment has collected 3500 hours of data operating underground in a deep silver mine (3290 M.W.E.). Only one event was found to be consistent with neutrinoless double beta decay. Using this one event, a limit of greater than or equal to 1 x 1022 years (1 sigma) is set on the 1°°Mo half-life. This is approximately five times larger than the best previous 1°°Mo limit.

Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles and provide information on their absolute mass scale hierarchy. CUORE is now under construction and will consist of an array of 988 TeO2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK, but the first tower (CUORE-0) is already taking data. The experimental techniques used will be presented as well as the preliminary CUORE-0 results. The current status of the full-mass experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed.

Book excerpt: Recent neutrino oscillation measurements provide definitive evidence for non-zero neutrino masses. Oscillation measurements, however, only measure mass differences, not the absolute mass scale. Neutrinoless double-beta decay, a hypothetical nuclear transition, can probe the absolute neutrino mass scale. This process, if observed, would also imply that neutrinos are their own anti-particles and that lepton number is not a conserved quantity. The 200 kg Enriched Xenon Observatory (EXO-200) detector is currently taking data to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of Xe-136, with an expected half-life in excess of 10^25 years. Located at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, New Mexico, the detector is filled with 200 kg of isotopically enriched liquid xenon. The analysis presented here describes the recent observation with EXO-200 of the two-neutrino double beta-decay of Xe-136. This is the rarest process ever directly observed with a half-life of 2.11+-0.21 x 10^21 years and provides important input to the measurement of the neutrinoless decay.
