Book excerpt: In this study, a dense neutrino medium such as that inside a core-collapse supernova can experience collective flavor conversion or oscillations because of the neutral-current weak interaction among the neutrinos. This phenomenon has been studied in a restricted, stationary supernova model which possesses the (spatial) spherical symmetry about the center of the supernova and the (directional) axial symmetry around the radial direction. Recently it has been shown that these spatial and directional symmetries can be broken spontaneously by collective neutrino oscillations. In this letter we analyze the neutrino flavor instabilities in a time-dependent supernova model. Our results show that collective neutrino oscillations start at approximately the same radius in both the stationary and time-dependent supernova models unless there exist very rapid variations in local physical conditions on timescales of a few microseconds or shorter. Our results also suggest that collective neutrino oscillations can vary rapidly with time in the regimes where they do occur which need to be studied in time-dependent supernova models.

The non-standard interactions are predicted by some extensions to the standard model, but no such interactions have been discovered or proven to exist. An example of an interaction which comes from R-parity violating Supersymmetry is discussed in detail in Chapter 1. Reviews of nuclear physics and the supernova model are also given in this chapter. The cross sections for neutrino flavor changing scattering in vacuum with nuclei and free nucleons are given in Chapter 1. Corrections which account for neutrinos scattering with nuclei in the core medium are given in Chapter 2. Uncertainties in the equation of state and composition of nuclear matter at high density, and the impact of these uncertainties on neutrino scattering cross sections are discussed in Chapter 2 as well. Analytical estimates of flavor changing scattering rates are calculated in Chapter 1 and a qualitative discussion of the effects on the model is then offered. Results from a one-zone core collapse numerical simulation are presented in Chapter 2. A detailed discussion of the code, and equations which describe the core are included in this chapter. Chapter 3 outlines how to include these interactions in a full simulation with neutrino transport and hydrodynamics.

Book excerpt: In order to decode the neutrino burst signal from a Galactic core-collapse supernova and reveal the complicated inner workings of the explosion we need a thorough understanding of the neutrino flavor evolution from the proto-neutron star outwards. The flavor content of the signal evolves due to both neutrino collective effects and matter effects which can lead to a highly interesting interplay and distinctive spectral features. In this paper we investigate the supernova neutrino flavor evolution in three different progenitors and include collective flavor effects, the evolution of the Mikheyev, Smirnov & Wolfenstein conversion due to the shock wave passage through the star, and the impact of turbulence. In the Oxygen-Neon-Magnesium supernova we find that the impact of turbulence is both brief and slight during a window of 1-2 seconds post bounce. Thus the spectral features of collective and shock effects in the neutrino signals from ONeMg supernovae may be almost turbulence free making them the easiest to interpret. For the more massive progenitors we again find that small amplitude turbulence, up to 10%, leads to a minimal modification of the signal, and the emerging neutrino spectra retain both collective and MSW features. However, when larger amounts of turbulence is added, 30% and 50%, the features of collective and shock wave effects in the high density resonance channel are almost completely obscured at late times. Yet at the same time we find the other mixing channels - the low density resonance channel and the non-resonant channels - begin to develop turbulence signatures. Large amplitude turbulent motions in the outer layers of more massive, iron core-collapse supernovae may obscure the most obvious fingerprints of collective and shock wave effects in the neutrino signal but cannot remove them completely, and additionally bring about new features in the signal.

Book excerpt: The works presented in this thesis deal with the flavor conversion of the supernova neutrinos. In a first work, we performed the first complete calculation including the shock wave and the self-interaction for the estimate of the diffuse supernova neutrino background (dsnb) flux arriving on earth. This flux corresponds to the combination of the neutrinos coming from all the supernovae that exploded in the visible universe. By varying the angle theta_13 of the mixing matrix u_mnsp, we showed that the shock wave has a significant impact on the dsnb flux. At the same time we proposed a smplified model that accounts for the shock wave effects and that could be used for future calculations of the dsnb. The other two works are focused on the first exact analytical derivation of the matter basis in the presence of the self-interaction. We underlined, for the two flavors case, the important role of the matter phase beta tilde and we established a condition on the elements of the flavor hamiltonian for the end of the synchronization phase and the onset of the bipolar oscillations. Through the matter basis, we identified, by using the polarization vector formalism, a correspondence between the "spectral split" and the magnetic resonance phenomena. This has allowed us to confirm hypothesis such as the adiabaticity of the propagation, the use of the average magnetic field et the corotating frame that were postulated with the help of smplified models. A prelminary study of the three flavors case indicate us the conservation of this correspondence.

Book excerpt: Ever since a collection of 19 flickers of Cherenkov radiation in neutrino detectors around the world have been linked to SN 1987a, the physics community has been certain that neutrinos are the pivotal actors in core-collapse supernovae. SN1987a confirmed Jim Wilson and Sterling Colgate's basic picture of the collapsed core of a massive star shining with neutrinos of all kinds, radiating with a luminosity of 1053 erg s−1. At a stroke neutrinos provided a mechanism by which nature could explode an object as massive as a star and produce the heavy elements that we find all around us. Like all great discoveries, however, the neutrino burst of SN 1987a raised more questions than it answered. Neutrinos are known to change their lepton flavor as a purely quantum mechanical process in vacuum and in the sun and the earth, and our experimental knowledge of this process leads us to an inexorable conclusion: neutrinos will change their flavor states in supernovae, as well. One of the most deucedly difficult problems in neutrino astrophysics for the last few decades has been the question of how neutrino flavor transforms in the supernova environment. The intense flux of neutrinos from the core of a supernova is so numerous that the interactions of neutrinos with one another is strong enough to create a quantum mechanical coupling of their flavor evolution histories, so that the flavor states of all neutrinos are non-linearly related to one another. This non-linear coupling of neutrino flavor states can have fascinating consequences, leading to collective flavor transformation phenomena, where all neutrinos emerging from the core begin to change flavor simultaneously. The dynamics of these non-linear effects can provide great insight into as yet unconstrained sectors of neutrino physics. Likewise, should the details of neutrino flavor mixing be worked out before the next galactic supernova, the understanding of neutrino flavor transformation might act as a neutrino telescope, allowing an observer to probe the depths of an exploding star. However, supernovae are environments that test the limits of our physical understanding. A cherished paradigm within the supernova neutrino community, the "neutrino bulb" model, has been found to be critically flawed early in the explosion. The collapsed core is not the only source of neutrinos which are important for flavor transformation. The early epochs of supernovae posses a "halo" of neutrinos, which have scattered inwards from the outer reaches of the explosion envelope. These halo neutrinos carry with them quantum information about the flavor transformation that has transpired elsewhere in the star, and can dominate the flavor evolution of neutrinos emerging from the core. This alters the fundamental nature of the problem of neutrino flavor transformation in supernovae, and will require all new approaches to address.
