Book excerpt: The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment is a long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiment that searches for neutrino oscillations with measurements of an off-axis, high purity, muon neutrino beam. The neutrinos are detected 295 km from production by the Super Kamiokande detector. A near detector 280 m from the production target measures the unoscillated beam. This thesis outlines an analysis using samples in the near detector and Super Kamiokande to measure the disappearance of muon neutrinos. To manage the complexity this analysis, a Markov Chain Monte Carlo framework was used to maximize a likelihood to estimate the oscillation parameters. T2K Run 1+2+3 data (3.010 x1020 POT) is used for the analysis ... .

Book excerpt: This thesis measures the muon neutrino oscillation at T2K using the first data of the experiment. It concentrates on developing an original selection at Super-Kamionde, the T2K far detector, that improves the performance of the current standard selection. Anew, more precise measurement of the oscillation parameters sin22823 and ~m~2 is performed using this new selection. T2K is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment located in Japan which began data taking in January 2010. It uses the world's most powerful ac- celerator generated beam of muon neutrinos intersected by two detectors. The near detector is located 280 m from the beam source while Super-Kamiokande lies 295 km away. Super-Kamiokande is a 50 kt water Cherenkov detector which measures the neutrino beam after oscillation. The determination of the oscillation pa- rameters comes from looking at the disappearance of muon neutrinos from the beam. For this purpose event selection at Super-Kamiokande is optimised for neutrino flavour identification and energy reconstruction, specifically, select- ing muon neutrino charged-current quasi-elastic events, primarily with single muon-like Cherenkov rings produced by the outgoing muon. This thesis eval- " uates two new methods of enhancing the selection to obtain a higher sensi- tivity from the data, firstly by exploring a multi-variate analysis approach to charged-current quasi-elastic selection, and secondly through the exploration of an additional charged-current single charged pion channel. Out of these only the multivariate based selection produced an improvement in the sensitivity to oscillation with respect to the standard selection. A first analysis of the data collected until March 11th 2011 using the above described improvement is presented in this thesis. A value of 2.68~~:ig x 10-3 eV2 was recorded for ~m~2 and 0.999~~:~~~ for sin22823.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the author's work in the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, in which neutrinos are generated by a proton beam and are detected by near and far neutrino detectors. In order to achieve the precise measurement of the neutrino oscillation, an accurate understanding of the neutrino beam and the neutrino interaction is essential. Thus, the author measured the neutrino beam properties and the neutrino interaction cross sections using a near neutrino detector called INGRID and promoted a better understanding of them. Then, the author performed a neutrino oscillation analysis using the neutrino beam and neutrino interaction models verified by the INGRID measurements. As a result, some values of the neutrino CP phase are disfavored at the 90% confidence level. If the measurement precision is further improved, we may be able to discover the finite CP phase which involves the CP violation. Thus, this result is an important step towards the discovery of CP violation in the lepton sector, which may be the key to understanding the origin of the matter–antimatter asymmetry in the universe.

Book excerpt: The Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan producing precise measurements of neutrino oscillations and neutrino interactions with nuclear targets. T2K utilizes a muon (anti-)neutrino beam produced at the J-PARC proton accelerator facility which is measured at a suite of near detectors, ND280 and INGRID, and the far detector, Super-Kamiokande. One of the dominant systematic uncertainties for the oscillation analysis is from the uncertainty in neutrino interaction modeling with complex nuclei, which will eventually become the limiting uncertainty for the next generation of neutrino oscillation experiments. Therefore measurements of neutrino cross sections on nuclear targets is essential for understanding how to model these complicated nuclear interactions. This thesis presents a novel neutrino cross section measurement utilizing both of the T2K near detectors, ND280 and INGRID, in a joint statistical fit. Because the T2K near detectors are exposed to neutrinos from the same beamline, the uncertainties in the neutrino flux prediction will be correlated. This fact combined with the different neutrino energy spectra seen at each detector will allow for some separation of flux and cross section effects, and presents an opportunity to study the neutrino cross section as a function of energy using the same neutrino beam. This analysis is the first cross section measurement on T2K to use samples from multiple detectors in the same beamline. This thesis presents a description of the statistical analysis framework, the event selection, the treatment of systematic uncertainties, and the extracted muon neutrino CC0pi double differential cross section in bins of muon kinematics for ND280 and INGRID, including the correlations between the detectors.

Alysia Marino's research is fo- cussed on making precise measurements of neutrino properties using in- tense accelerator-generated neutrino beams. As a part of this grant, she is collaborating on the Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) long-baseline neutrino exper- iment [6], currently taking data in Japan, and on the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) design e ort for a future Long-Baseline Neu- trino Facility (LBNF) in the US. 1 She is also a member of the NA61/SHINE particle production experiment at CERN, but as that e ort is supported by other funds, it will not be discussed further here. T2K was designed to search for the disappearance of muon neutrinos () and the appearance of electron neutrinos (e), using a beam of muon neu- trino beam that travels 295 km across Japan towards the Super-Kamiokande detector. In 2011 T2K rst reported indications of e appearance [2], a pre- viously unobserved mode of neutrino oscillations. In the past year, T2K has published a combined analysis of disappearance and e appearance [1], and began collecting taking data with a beam of anti-neutrinos, instead of neutrinos, to search for hints of violation of the CP symmetry of the uni- verse. The proposed DUNE experiment has similar physics goals to T2K, but will be much more sensitive due to its more massive detectors and new higher-intensity neutrino beam. This e ort will be very high-priority particle physics project in the US over the next decade.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. An intense muon neutrino (or antineutrino) beam is produced at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) by protons hitting a graphite target. The neutrinos are measured 280 m from the target, and again 295 km across Japan using the Super-Kamiokande detector. This allows for the study of the neutrino oscillations in four channels: the electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance, and muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance. In T2K, neutrinos are observed primarily via charged current quasi-elastic scattering (CCQE) interactions, as well as charged current single pion (CC1) production. The pion is free to interact inside and outside the nucleus primarily via absorption and charge exchange processes. Reducing the uncertainties on these cross sections reduces the systematic uncertainties for neutrino oscillation measurements. The Dual Use Experiment at TRIUMF (DUET) was conducted to address this issue. This thesis describes the recent results from DUET: the most precise measurements of absorption and charge exchange cross sections of pion on carbon for the momentum range of 201.6~295.1 MeV/c. These DUET measurements, along with existing pion-nucleus scattering data for different atomic nuclei, are used to improve the cascade model that simulates pion-nucleus scattering in T2K, and to reduce the associated systematic uncertainties. These improvements are used in a Markov Chain Monte Carlo neutrino oscillation analysis of the T2K Run 1-8 data, corresponding to 14.7x10e20 protons-on-target in neutrino mode and 7.6x10e20 in antineutrino mode. As a result, the most precise measurement of the parameters that govern the neutrino oscillation phenomenon is obtained. In particular, the values indicative of no matter-antimatter asymmetry (CP-conservation) are excluded at the 95.4% (2-sigma) level. This constitutes the world-leading constraint for CP-violation in the leptonic sector.

Book excerpt: This thesis reports the calculation of neutrino production for the T2K experiment; the most precise a priori estimate of neutrino production that has been achieved for any accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiment to date. The production of intense neutrino beams at accelerator facilities requires exceptional understanding of chains of particle interactions initiated within extended targets. In this thesis, the calculation of neutrino production for T2K has been improved by using measurements of particle production from a T2K replica target, taken by the NA61/SHINE experiment. This enabled the reduction of the neutrino production uncertainty to the level of 5%, which will have a significant impact on neutrino oscillation and interaction measurements by T2K in the coming years. In addition to presenting the revised flux calculation methodology in an accessible format, this thesis also reports a joint T2K measurement of muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance, and the accompanying electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance, with the updated beam constraint.

It takes place in Japan and uses a muonic neutrino beam produced by the J-PARC accelerator complex, a near detector, ND280 on the J-PARC site in order to characterise the beam, and a far detector, Super-Kamiokande 295 km away in order to measure the neutrino oscillations. The near detector is also used to study the neutrino interactions and the goal of this thesis is the measurement of muonic neutrino deep inelastic scattering cross sections. The thesis first introduces neutrino physics, then the T2K experiment and more particularly the time projection chambers of the near detector, and its data quality checking that I was in charge of. The analysis is based on the T2K data recorded until 2013. The selection of charged current muonic neutrino interactions is then presented, as well as a preliminary study of the selection of charged current muonic neutrino interactions with the production of a neutral pion. A criterion on track multiplicity allows enriching the former sample in interactions corresponding to a neutrino deep inelastic scattering. Finally a fit, first validated on simulated data, allows the extraction of the muonic neutrino deep inelastic scattering cross sections.

Book excerpt: One of the primary goals in neutrino physics at the present moment is to make a measurement of the neutrino oscillation parameter $\theta_$. This parameter, in addition to being unknown, could potentially allow for the introduction of CP violation into the lepton sector. The MINOS long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment has the ability to make a measurement of this parameter, by looking for the oscillation of muon neutrinos to electron neutrinos between a Near and Far Detector over a distance of 735 km. This thesis discusses the development of an analysis framework to search for this oscillation mode. Two major improvements to pre-existing analysis techniques have been implemented by the author. First, a novel particle ID technique based on strip topology, known as the Library Event Matching (LEM) method, is optimized for use in MINOS. Second, a multiple bin likelihood method is developed to fit the data. These two improvements, when combined, increase MINOS' sensitivity to $\sin^2(2\theta_)$ by 27\% over previous analyses. This thesis sees a small excess over background in the Far Detector. A Frequentist interpretation of the data rules out $\theta_=0$ at 91\%. A Bayesian interpretation of the data is also presented, placing the most stringent upper boundary on the oscillation parameter to date, at $\sin^2(2\theta_)

Book excerpt: "Starting in 1998 experiments began to show that neutrinos oscillate from one flavor to another over time, a phenomena that is explained by the existence of neutrino mass. The disappearance of muon and electron neutrinos over long distances, presumably from conversion into tau neutrinos, has been measured to great precision in many experiments. T2K is a long baseline experiment from Tokai to Kamioka in Japan that was designed to precisely measure a third type of oscillation by observing the conversion of muon neutrinos into electron neutrinos. A major background for oscillated electron neutrinos at the far detector comes from intrinsic electron neutrinos produced in the beam. To constrain this background, near detectors located 280m from the target are used to measure electron neutrino flux and cross sections. This work explains in detail the composition of the T2K beam, near and far detectors and how the components are calibrated to reduce errors. It focuses on the specific uncertainties that exist in the neutrino generators and in the beam models that affect the far detector measurement. Finally a detailed explanation of a measurement in the Pi-zero detector(P0D) of the intrinsic electron neutrino component and a constraint on the Qø distribution of the charged current quasi-elastic like component of the sample is described"--Leaf vi.

Book excerpt: The NOvA experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment based out of Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory that uses two liquid scintillator detectors, one at Fermilab (the \near" detector) and a second 14 kton detector in northern Minnesota (the \far" detector.) The primary physics goals of the NOvA experiment are to measure neutrino mixing parameters through both the v[mu] disappearance and ve appearance channels using neutrinos from the newly upgraded NuMI beam line. The NOvA v[mu] disappearance analysis can significantly improve the world's best measurement of sin2 [theta] 23. This analysis proceeds by using the measured v[mu] charged-current energy spectrum in the near detector to predict the spectrum in the far detector, and comparing this to the measured spectrum to obtain a best fit for the oscillation parameters sin2 [theta] 23 and [Delta]m2 32. Since this fit is governed by the shape of the energy spectrum, the best fit will be maximized by obtaining the best possible energy resolution for the individual neutrino events. This dissertation describes an alternate v[mu] disappearance analysis technique for the NOvA experiment, based on the idea that estimating the energy resolution of the individual events will allow them to be separated into different energy resolution samples in order to improve the final fit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. The MINOS Far Detector, located in the Soudan Underground Laboratory in Soudan MN, has been collecting data since August 2003. The scope of this dissertation involves identifying the atmospheric neutrino induced muons that are created by the neutrinos interacting with the rock surrounding the detector cavern, performing a neutrino oscillation search by measuring the oscillation parameter values of [Delta]m$2\atop{23}$ and sin2 2[theta]23, and searching for CPT violation by measuring the charge ratio for the atmospheric neutrino induced muons. A series of selection cuts are applied to the data set in order to extract the neutrino induced muons. As a result, a total of 148 candidate events are selected. The oscillation search is performed by measuring the low to high muon momentum ratio in the data sample and comparing it to the same ratio in the Monte Carlo simulation in the absence of neutrino oscillation. The measured double ratios for the ''all events'' (A) and high resolution (HR) samples are RA = R$data\atop{low/high}$/R$MC\atop{low/high}$ = 0.60$+0.11\atop{-0.10}$(stat) ± 0.08(syst) and RHR = R$data\atop{low/high}$/R$MC\atop{low/high}$ = 0.58$+0.14\atop{-0.11}$(stat) ± 0.05(syst), respectively. Both event samples show a significant deviation from unity giving a strong indication of neutrino oscillation. A combined momentum and zenith angle oscillation fit is performed using the method of maximum log-likelihood with a grid search in the parameter space of [Delta]m2 and sin2 2[theta]. The best fit point for both event samples occurs at [Delta]m$2\atop{23}$ = 1.3 x 10-3 eV2, and sin2 2[theta]23 = 1. This result is compatible with previous measurements from the Super Kamiokande experiment and Soudan 2 experiments. The MINOS Far Detector is the first underground neutrino detector to be able to distinguish the charge of the muons. The measured charge is used to test the rate of the neutrino to the anti-neutrino oscillations by measuring the neutrino induced muon charge ratio. Using the high resolution sample, the [mu]+ to [mu]- double charge ratio has been determined to be RCPT = R$data\atop{[mu]-/[mu]+}$/R$MC\atop{[mu]-/[mu]+}$ = 0.90$+0.24\atop{-0.18}$(stat) ± 0.09(syst). With the uncertainties added in quadrature, the CPT double ratio is consistent with unity showing no indication for CPT violation.
