Book excerpt: We study the pair production of neutral Higgs bosons through gluon fusion at hadron colliders in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We present analytical expressions for the relevant amplitudes, including both quark and squark loop contributions, and allowing for mixing between the superpartners of left- and right-handed quarks. Squark loop contributions can increase the cross section for the production of two CP--even Higgs bosons by more than two orders of magnitude, if the relevant trilinear soft breaking parameter is large and the mass of the lighter squark eigenstate is not too far above its current lower bound. In the region of large tan[beta], neutral Higgs boson pair production might even be observable in the 4b final state during the next run of the Tevatron collider.

Linking bosons and fermions in an elegant formalism, SUSY allows for a natural solution of the hierarchy problem and for accurate unification of the three Standard Model gauge couplings at a high unification scale. Furthermore, if R-parityis conserved, it provides a convincing candidate for the large amount of cold dark matter observed in the Universe. In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, this is generally the lightest neutralino, one of the spin-1/2 supersymmetric partners of the electroweak gauge bosons (gauginos) and of the Higgs bosons (Higgsinos), which mix to form four neutral (neutralino) and two charged (chargino) mass eigenstates. After an introduction to supersymmetry, we present the transverse-momentum and threshold resummation formalisms. We then consider the gaugino-pair production at current hadron colliders, i.e. at RHIC, Tevatron and LHC. We study the corresponding effects of polarised initial hadrons and full SUSY-QCD corrections. We finally apply transverse-momentum and threshold re-summations to gaugino-pair production, and show that they have important impact on the transverse-momentum and invariant-mass distributions. Throughout these studies, we also investigate the theoretical uncertainties coming from scale and parton-density function variations.

We also present analytic results for the two-loop contributions to the spin-0 and spin-2 form factors in the amplitude. The reducible contributions, given by the double-triangle diagrams, are evaluated exactly while the two-loop irreducible diagrams are evaluated by an asymptotic expansion in heavy top-quark mass up to and including terms of O(1/m$8\atop{t}$). We estimate that mass effects can reduce the hadronic cross section by at most 10 %, assuming that the finite top-quark mass effects are of similar size in the entire range of partonic energies.

The NLO QCD corrections lead to less dependence on the renormalization scale ([mu]{sub R}) and the factorization scale ([mu]{sub F}) than the leading-order (LO) cross section, and they significantly increase the LO cross section. The rate for inclusive Higgs pair production is small in the Standard Model, but can be large in models with enhanced couplings of the b quark to the Higgs bosons.

The author's novel reconstruction algorithms, deployed on the Field-Programmable Gate Arrays of the new CMS trigger architecture, have brought a gain of over a factor 2 in efficiency for the identification of tau leptons, with a very significant impact on important H boson measurements, such as its decays to tau lepton pairs and the search for H boson pair production. He also describes a novel analysis of HH → bb tautau, a high priority physics topic in a difficult channel. The original strategy, optimisation of event categories, and the control of the background have made the result one of the most sensitive concerning the self-coupling of the Higgs boson among all possible channels at the LHC.

Book excerpt: We study the potential of hadron colliders in the search for the pair production of neutral Higgs bosons in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We perform a detailed signal and background analysis, working out efficient kinematical cuts for the extraction of the signal. The important role of squark loop contributions to the signal is re-emphasized. If the signal is sufficiently enhanced by these contributions, it could even be observable at the next run of the upgraded Tevatron collider in the near future. At the LHC the pair production of light and heavy Higgs bosons might be detectable simultaneously.
