Book excerpt: Two multi-instrumented Terrier Malemute rockets including ion mass spectrometers were launched from Kwajalein on the nights of 17 and 23 July 1979 during equatorial Spread F events. Detailed ionospheric structure and composition measurements were made between about 100 and 590 km. The first flight penetrated six areas of 'bite-outs' spread over the range 265 to 560 km on upleg as well as several more depletions on downleg. The strongest irregularities, up to 90 percent depletion, occurred at the altitudes of 265 to 285 km just above the F region ledge at 250 km. There was no evidence of enhanced bottomside tracer ions (NO(+), O2(+) or meteoric ions) in any of the holes, which were composed mostly of O(+) and smaller amounts of N(+). From the composition signatures, the source of the bubbles appeared to be near the F region ledge. Within the higher altitude holes, the N(+)/O(+) ratios were smaller than the adjacent ionosphere ratios, indicating not only that the source regions were near the ledge, but also that the bubbles had initiated earlier when the ledge was at higher altitudes. While O(+) and N(+) exhibited strong fluctuations, NO(+) and O2(+) had fairly smooth profiles with scale heights similar to N2 and O2 respectively, demonstrating steady-state conditions and a stable neutral atmosphere with an exospheric temperature of about 1100K. This suggests that neutral atmospheric turbulence is not a major source of the ionospheric irregularities. Time periods for ion-chemical processes to achieve the observed composition are discussed in terms of bubble formation times and rise velocities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity has long been fascinated by the planet Mars. Was its climate ever conducive to life? What is the atmosphere like today and why did it change so dramatically over time? Eleven spacecraft have successfully flown to Mars since the Viking mission of the 1970s and early 1980s. These orbiters, landers and rovers have generated vast amounts of data that now span a Martian decade (roughly eighteen years). This new volume brings together the many new ideas about the atmosphere and climate system that have emerged, including the complex interplay of the volatile and dust cycles, the atmosphere-surface interactions that connect them over time, and the diversity of the planet's environment and its complex history. Including tutorials and explanations of complicated ideas, students, researchers and non-specialists alike are able to use this resource to gain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of this most Earth-like of planetary neighbours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary layer meteorology is the study of the physical processes that take place in the layer of air that is most influenced by the earth's underlying surface. This text/reference gives an uncomplicated view of the structure of the boundary layer, the instruments available for measuring its mean and turbulent properties, how best to make the measurements, and ways to process and analyze the data. The main applications of the book are in atmospheric modelling, wind engineering, air pollution, and agricultural meteorology. The authors have pioneered research on atmospheric turbulence and flow, and are noted for their contributions to the study of the boundary layer. This important work will interest atmospheric scientists, meteorologists, and students and faculty in these fields.

This book was released on 1965 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A semi-theoretical model of the upper atmosphere has been constructed to allow the calculation of the primary neutral atmospheric properties (temperature, density, pressure, and composition) from 90 to 10,000 km as a function of local time and solar activity. The results of these calculations are presented in the form of tables for various local times and solar activities ranging over a solar cycle. The density in the exosphere is corrected for the escape of atomic hydrogen from the Earth's atmosphere. In order to check the model, the temperature, molecular weight, density and number densities for O, O2, and N2 are computed from 130 to 200 km for conditions of solar activity and local time corresponding to measurements made by Nier et al. (Neutral composition of the atmosphere in the 100- to 200-kilometer range, J. Geophys. Res., 69:979-989 (1964)) at White Sands on June 6, 1963. The observed properties and those calculated with the model differ by an average of 10 per cent. (Author).

Book excerpt: A recently developed rocket-borne mass spectrometer which employs a LN2 cryosorption pump has successfully obtained the first direct measurements of the major and minor neutral constituents of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. The mass analysis is performed using an rf quadrupole spectrometer with an electron impact ion source. Measurements were obtained from two flights, and the preliminary results from one of these are presented. The constituents measured include N2, O2, Ar, O, CO2, O3, and several other minor constituents. Measurements were obtained from 70 to 120 km. Atomic oxygen measurements were obtained between 85 km and apogee on both up-leg and down-leg of the flight. The atomic oxygen measurements were obtained at lower altitudes by switching the ion source potentials on alternate spectral scans to ionize with 20-eV electrons. The lower ionizing energy reduces that portion of the signal at 16 amu due to dissociative ionization of O2. Number density profiles of individual constituents were obtained by normalizing the relative abundances to a density model. (Author).

Book excerpt: A formulation is presented for modeling neutral atmosphere structure in an intermediate height region (70-130 km) between given lower and upper models in temperature, pressure, density and constituent gas concentrations and to maintain continuity in the second derivative of temperature and the other properties with respect to height. The method employs temperature as the prime parameter requiring simultaneously a best fit to available temperature data at the intermediate heights and hydrostatic consistency between the nitrogen partial pressures at 70 and 130 km. The method is well suited to upper and lower models that have analytical representations and is developed as the upper model and for polynomially-generated height-latitude cross-sections in the lower region. Attention is given to comparisons between observed and model temperatures and it is found that mid-latitude data (primarily obtained using the incoherent scatter technique) are on average higher than the models due to the requirement to maintain hydrostatic consistency in nitrogen partial pressures between the 70 km and 130 km values of the given lower and upper models. This discrepancy which at present remains an unresolved problem is discussed in the text. Tables of temperature, pressure, and density are included in the report based on the best fit to available data and simultaneously satisfying the constraints of the upper and lower models. Keywords: Temperature; Mesosphere; Pressure; Lower thermosphere; Density; Model atmospheres. (JHD)

Book excerpt: The Structure and Atmospheric Turbulence Environment (STATE) experiment was conducted at Poker Flat Research Range, Alaska during the first two weeks of June 1983. In situ measurements of the atmospheric properties have been compared to the MST radar signals in an effort to interpret the dynamical conditions in the middle atmosphere. The measurements were made during the summer season at PFRR based on the large signals which have been measured by the MST radar over the past several years. Rockets with probes which can measure the electron irregularities with high spatial resolution were launched on three occasions which corresponded to selected conditions observed in real time in the radar data. In one of these cases, several other instruments were launched to study the structure of the neutral atmosphere. Profiles of density, temperature, wind and turbulence properties were measured. This paper describes the experiment and introduces the several scientific papers to follow. (Author).
