Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JOSEPH MEITES The idea that the endocrine system is involved in aging processes is as old as the beginnings of endocrinology. The first endocrine experiment related to aging was reported by Brown-Sequard, who is usually re garded as the "father of endocrinology. " In 1889, at the age of 72 years, he reported that he had succeeded in rejuvenating himself by injections of testicular extracts from dogs and guinea pigs. Although the favorable effects observed may have been due mainly to the powers of auto suggestion, his reports created a considerable interest in endocrinology and its relation to aging, and eventually led to the use of estrogens for treating certain pre-and postmenopausal symptoms in women, and an drogens for treating some symptoms in aging men. Up to about the 1960's, the relatively few studies on endocrine-aging relationships dealt mainly with changes in weight and histological appearance of endocrine organs in aging animals and human subjects, and included a limited number of measurements of endocrine function by bioassays and chem ical (for steroids) procedures. Within these limitations, gerontological investigators were unable to establish any definite relationships between endocrine functions and aging processes, with the exception of the con nection between reproductive decline and gonadal and pituitary activity.

Book excerpt: The communication between the hypothalamus, pituitary, and gonad is bi-directional, and alterations of the communication in the circuitry, as often occurs during aging and drug abuse, results in acyclicity, hypogonadism, and impotence. This important reference covers topics on the neuroendocrine control mechanisms governing the reproductive process in both males and females. It discusses the importance of the differentiation of the neuroendocrine brain during the developmental period for the normal reproductive process. It also summarizes the effects of prenatal drug abuse on the differentiation of the neuroendocrine brain development and how this alteration induces abnormalities in the reproduction process. This comprehensive volume compares the effects of various psycoactive drugs on the maintenance of reproduction and describes the changes in the reproductive neurendocrine axis during aging.

Book excerpt: It is the purpose of this volume to present a representative sampling of those neural and hormonal studies which have been the focus of the most intense interest in the recent gerontological research. To this end we have been fortunate to enlist the aid of some of the most competent and innovative investigators in the field. More than this, however, an attempt has been made to provide detailed methodological as well as theoretical evaluation for the areas considered. It is our hope that those researchers interested in this area of regulation during aging will be able to utilize the information contained herein as a basis both for critical analysis as well as for the designing and execution of further experiments in this more important area.

Book excerpt: Endocrinology of Aging: Clinical Aspects in Diagrams and Images presents chapters in a way that allows the reader to incorporate concepts and complex facts in a visual way. As the global population becomes older, the need for a deeper understanding of geriatric pathology increases, and with it, there becomes a greater need to access educational resources on the endocrinology and metabolism of aging. According to the United Nations, the number of people aged 60 years or over in the world is projected to be 1.4 billion in 2030 and 2.1 billion in 2050, hence this is a timely resource. Divided according to specific endocrine and metabolic systems, providing evidence-based content Addresses physiological changes that alter the pathophysiology of the clinical picture Considers the patient transitioning from young adult to elderly, discussing endocrinological challenges to discern physiology from pathology Focuses on age as an essential factor for diagnostic and endocrine management

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This supplement focusses on the neurobiology and neuroendocrinology of the ageing process and their relationship to degenerative diseases. Biochemical mechanisms, neuropharmacology and specific receptor changes in ageing are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to ageing of the cholinergic system in humans and other mammals. Some of the hypothalmic mechanisms in ageing are also covered, including the potential usefulness of transgenic animals in this type of research. The roles of growth hormone and of changes in growth hormone secretion and insulin-like growth factors are new areas of interest, and raise the possibility of endocrine intervention with the ageing process in humans. After specific description of alterations of the neuroendocrine mechanisms, the relationship between hormonal function, stress and behaviour is considered as a single phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings emanate from the Second Tarbox Parkinson's Disease Symposium held February 2-4, 1978, at the SouthPark Inn in Lubbock, Texas. The Symposium was sponsored by the Tarbox Parkin son's Disease Institute and the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics of the Texas Tech University School of Medicine at Lubbock. The First Symposium took place in October, 1976. The Second Tarbox Parkinson's Disease Symposium boldly brought together investigators at the cutting edge of aging and neuroendo crine research and attempted to relate them to Parkinson's disease. Credit for the concept must go to the Program Chairman, Dr. David E. Potter. Once the plan was conceived the organizers relied heavily on the advice of Dr. Caleb E. Finch, whose counsel in developing the program was invaluable. The final verdict on the success of this daring venture must await the outcome of the publication of this Volume. Nevertheless, those in attendance could not fail but note the enthusiasm and excitement of the participants as their findings from the diverse disciplines of the neurological, aging, and endo crine sciences converged. This in itself is testimony that the Sym posium accomplished some degree of success. The Tarbox Parkinson's Disease Institute was established in 1973 with funds appropriated by the State of Texas and is dedicated to research, patient care, and education in Parkinson's disease and related neurological disorders. The Institute is named after Mr.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurogerontology tells the story of how the aging brain affects all aspects of cognition and physical performance. It comprehensively links the principles and substance of neuroscience with gerontology and psychology. Written largely from a behavioral neuroscience perspective, Neurogerontology explores the functional relationships between the central nervous system and psychological phenomena of aging, including perception, arousal, learning, cognition, and motor behavior. Willot emphasizes healthy aging, but dementia and other pathological conditions are discussed when relevant. This evidence-based approach to the neuroscience of aging makes this a valuable reference for professionals, as well as an informative textbook for students in gerontology courses.

Book excerpt: Drug abuse, environmental pollution, induced health risks and the increase of the proportion of aged people are three grave problems of medicine and of the society all over the world in our epoch. The neuroendocrine system, with special emphasis to the pineal gland, plays an integrative role in the development and disintegration of the physical and mental changes which occur towards the two end-points of life, at the beginning and termination of the life cycle. This volume, documented by 17 tables, 23 line and column diagrams, and two tables of microphotographs, closes with a detailed bibliography, containing about 200 data of the literature.
