Book excerpt: "This reference classic has approximately doubled in size since its last publication 20 years ago, and the expansion involves more than the thorough revision and addition of articles about music of the past. More articles about 20th-century composers and composer-performers have been added, as well as topical articles about the gender-related, multicultural, and interdisciplinary ways that music is now being studied. Add to these changes that New Grove is also available online, making it a source that would have made its many-faceted creator Sir George Grove proud"--Outstanding reference sources, American Libraries, May 2002.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete English translation of F. E. Niedt's influential Musicalische Handletung. The first volume, a treatise on thorough-bass, attracted the attention of J. S. Bach, who apparently modelled his teaching after it. The second and third volumes, both revised and edited by Johann Mattheson, deal with, respectively, variation (including a chaconne and two complete suites as models and a musical term dictionary) and counterpoint. These volumes, bound together here in one volume, together with an introduction and explanatory notes by Professor Poulin, provide valuable insights into the theory and practice of eighteenth-century music.

Book excerpt: Dietrich Buxtehude (c. 1637-1707) was the greatest figure in the history of German music between Schutz and Bach. His church music is performed today, yet that of his North German contemporaries (such as Matthias Weckmann, Christoph Bernhard, Nicolaus Bruhns, and Johann Meder) has receivedcomparatively little attention. This book, taking its lead from Jerome Roche's illuminating study North Italian Church Music in the Age of Monteverdi (OUP, 1984), presents an overview of the North German church music of Buxtehude's lifetime, much of which remains unavailable in modern editions. Itchallenges widely-held beliefs about the nature and development of the repertory, and of the place held by Buxtehude within it. The picture that emerges is of a repertory that is far more beholden to Italian influence that has previously been appreciated, and one that is not dominated by any singlefigure. After discussion of the religious background and liturgical context in which the music was performed, Geoffrey Webber examines the manner in which Italian church music became known and performed in the region, and surveys composers from all the principal courts and cities in the extensiveNorth German and Baltic area. He highlights the relationship between the social context in which individual composers worked and the nature of their output. After a detailed analysis of the repertory itself, the book concludes with an examination of issues relating to performance practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current notion of ballet history holds that the theatrical dance of the eighteenth century was simple, earthbound, and limited in range of motion scarcely different from the ballroom dance of the same period. Contemporary opinion also maintains that this early form of ballet was largely a stranger to the tours de force of grand jumps, multiple turns, and lifts so typical of classical ballet, owing to a supposed prevailing sense of Victorian-like decorum. The Styles of Eighteenth-Century Ballet explodes this utterly false view of ballet history, showing that there were in fact a variety of different styles of dance cultivated in this era, from the simple to the remarkably difficult, from the dignified earthbound to the spirited airborne, from the gravely serious to the grotesquely ridiculous. This is a fascinating exploration of the various styles of eighteenth-century dance covering ballroom and ballet, the four traditional styles of theatrical dance, regional preferences for given styles, and the importance of caprice, dance according to gender, the overall voluptuous nature of stage dancing, and finally dance notation and costume. Fairfax takes the reader on an in-depth journey through the world of ballet in the age of Mozart, Boucher, and Casanova.
