Book excerpt: "In the tradition of the modern classics The Tender Bar by J.R. Moehringer and The Liars' Club by Mary Karr, Blaine Lourd's Born on the Bayou is a powerful gothic memoir set in the bayous and oil towns of 1970s Louisiana. Coonass: [koon-as] (noun, slang, from the French conasse), a term of endearment and an expression of cultural and ethnic pride. So echoes this all-important definition throughout this good-humored memoir of growing up in the South. A rollercoaster rags-to-riches story, Blaine Lourd's meaningful debut is both a nostalgic send-up of '60s and '70s Louisiana, and a heartfelt portrait of one family's coming of age. In honest, confessional prose, Born on the Bayou transports us to a pocket of the South where Lourd learns how to be a man from the two people he looks up to the most: his larger-than-life father, 'Puffer, ' a prominent figure in the oil business (coonass translation: awl bidness), and his successful older brother, Bryan. With an eye turned perpetually toward the gruff and distant Puffer, Lourd illustrates how those closest to us can cause the most hurt, even as we seek their approval. Whether he's learning how to skin a duck at age ten, enjoying his first beer at thirteen, or detailing the finer points of ride-on lawn mowing, Lourd gets to the heart of being a Southerner with rawness and grace. From his early childhood through his eventual pilgrimage to the West Coast, he beautifully details what it means to have tangible roots to a place so ingrained it is a part of your own being. From barreling down the low country roads in a shiny Thunderbird to chasing women and learning to be a gentleman, Born on the Bayou is one man's struggle against the forces of family love, loyalty and obligation, and the ties that keep us tethered to our roots no matter how far we run. As the saying goes, 'a coonass always goes his own way'"--

Thank God the Lord built Paige Vanderdale to be able to bear all of those titles without becoming weary to the point of giving up. From the outside looking in, that life looks good on her. On the inside, though, Paige is coveting what so many others around her seem to have, which is true love. In the past, everything that she thought was love was either something far from it, or was taken away from her. Now Paige is afraid to let her hair down and open herself up to love again. Paige struggles with the decision to reach out to an old flame to rekindle their spark. When the blaze gets too high, will Paige do what she always does, which is grab the nearest fire extinguisher and try to put it out? Or will she utilize her backup plan and run? The decision is abruptly removed from Paige's hands when something else begins to pull her away--something that just might be the thing that finally breaks her.

Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize– and National Book Award–winning novel is now a new, boldly reimagined film from producers Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg, starring Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and Fantasia Barrino. A PBS Great American Read Top 100 Pick Celie has grown up poor in rural Georgia, despised by the society around her and abused by her own family. She strives to protect her sister, Nettie, from a similar fate, and while Nettie escapes to a new life as a missionary in Africa, Celie is left behind without her best friend and confidante, married off to an older suitor, and sentenced to a life alone with a harsh and brutal husband. In an attempt to transcend a life that often seems too much to bear, Celie begins writing letters directly to God. The letters, spanning 20 years, record a journey of self-discovery and empowerment guided by the light of a few strong women. She meets Shug Avery, her husband’s mistress and a jazz singer with a zest for life, and her stepson’s wife, Sofia, who challenges her to fight for independence. And though the many letters from Celie’s sister are hidden by her husband, Nettie’s unwavering support will prove to be the most breathtaking of all. The Color Purple has sold more than five million copies, inspired an Academy Award-nominated film starring Oprah Winfrey and directed by Steven Spielberg, and been adapted into a Tony-winning Broadway musical. Lauded as a literary masterpiece, this is the groundbreaking novel that placed Walker “in the company of Faulkner” (The Nation), and remains a wrenching—yet intensely uplifting—experience for new generations of readers. This ebook features a new introduction written by the author on the 25th anniversary of publication, and an illustrated biography of Alice Walker including rare photos from the author’s personal collection. The Color Purple is the 1st book in the Color Purple Collection, which also includes The Temple of My Familiar and Possessing the Secret of Joy.

Book excerpt: This is the true story about a phenomenal woman with an incredible life who found herself deeply involved in the Civil War, even though she tried to avoid the encounter. When she realized she had a reason to meet Abraham Lincoln without any idea why, she discovered she had a purpose that no other person did. The book begins when Nettie is a child and she seems to be surrounded by spiritual psychic events. It follows her youth as she seems to begin developing psychic medium abilities and her experiences with them. By the time she was twenty she discovered she was a trance medium with the ability to channel spirit voices through her own body while seemingly unconscious. While attempting to get a furlough for her injured brother while he was in the Civil War field hospital, Nettie happened to meet Mary Todd Lincoln at a "circle" in Washington, D. C. in December, 1862. The rest is history and all contained within the book. This book was written to celebrate Nettie Colburn for who she was and what she did to help save the American Union. After discovering that my gr-gr-grandmother Nettie Colburn had written a book about Lincoln and her experiences in Washington during the Civil War, I was determined to find an original 1891 printing. I discovered her book had also been copyrighted in Canada and without thinking, I wrote the author to see if I'd be able to rewrite or add to the story. I was quickly given written permission to rewrite Nettie's book. At the time I didn't know why I was compelled to do so, but I inevitably discovered I had records, insights and other information that would fill in the story of Nettie Colburn. After reading her 1891 book I discovered she had embedded family history information within its pages that helped me determine her family story where nothing was known. I also was able to determine Nettie was more deeply involved in the White House planning and actions in the Union's fight against the rebels in the Civil War. I took Nettie's story and was able to expand upon it to bring her story back to life. I believe I made this book a much fuller version of a biography of Nettie Colburn. She was an important person in the Civil War and appeared to have been over-shadowed by history.

Book excerpt: Every town has an attraction-a reason to visit and not just drive on through. For Barrington County, the June 1595 hunt and subsequent burning of the murderous witch, Willow Kellar, is what has provided the quaint little town centuries of notoriety, especially since Willow hexed the town just as she died, and promised that the families responsible would all die bloody, horrible deaths, eventually. The continually looming hex, now a famous legend, is strategically used to attract tourists to Barrington County's annual Harvest Festival. People from all over are drawn to visit the historic site of the Kellar burning. For Nathalie, Dean, Luke, and Sadie, four Barrington teenagers, this is nothing new. They anticipate a normal and wonderful summer with the upcoming festival, especially since love is in the air. Then strange things start to happen. It turns out the summer won't be normal after all, because sometimes, legends come true.
