Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Berlin Republic" has become the key concept of post-Cold War Germany and as such has been widely discussed inside as well as outside Germany. Symbolized by the move of the government from Bonn to Berlin it signals all the tangible and intangible changes in Germany's position in the world that have taken place during the 1990s. Well known German authors, decision-makers, and cultural leaders as well as internationally renowned experts on German affairs contribute to this volume, examining various aspects of the New Germany and its old/new capital, such as history, foreign policy, art, architecture, and culture. In this way, the reader gains a varied but comprehensive picture of Germany after unification as perceived by its neighbors, friends, and allies.

Book excerpt: While the broader field of communication studies is gaining more global prominence, this is an era when the underrepresented voices are fortunately becoming more recognized. Communication Theory and Application in Post-Socialist Contexts illustrates how Eurasia and Central and Eastern Europe—the post-socialist region—represents a population of more than 400 million who embody a wide array of communication experiences. This book aims to capture significant communication tendencies in several post-socialist countries and situate these tendencies within communication theory and application. It contains the examples of theory-building and adaptation as well as applied projects implemented in national and local contexts. Only by inclusive incorporation of the underrepresented experiences in the field’s discussions can the communication discipline continue to assert its relevance in and for the global community. This book serves as a resource for anyone on the quest of diversifying and globalizing communication studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we think about ourselves and others? Part one of the book examines the notion of human universals in cultural anthropology, psychology, linguistics, and in cognitive sciences. This part is focused on the issue of examining the processes of conceptualization, categorization and classification of human types and identities and it examines the role of psychological essentialism in these processes. It also focuses on the topic of religiously interpreted identities. Part two examines religiosity in modern Czech society. Contemporary Czech religiosity or lack thereof has been interpreted narrowly from the perspective of socially and culturally conceptualized factors. Other possible factors have been neglected – for example neuropsychological aspects. The World Religions Paradigm that underpins teaching about religions in Czech education system, is composed of reified concepts of religious traditions. This paradigm provides a basis for essentialised conceptualization of religiously interpreted identities in contemporary Czech society. Jakub Havlí?ek is Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology and Cultural Anthropology, Palacký University Olomouc, Czech Republic.
