Paul Cazalet had not, till he married, been wont to study season and climate; and many a time when Paris was at its emptiest, he had dwelt on in the Rue Mignon paint ing his hardest, and enjoying the um broken quietude. But Marian was far too great a lady, - far too much inclined to follow fashion's crowd, to think Of remaining in town when her acquaintances had taken flight into the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nelly Jocelyn, Widow, Vol. 2 of 3 Paul Cazalet, however, wanted no society beyond that Of his father, with Whom he could talk by the hour Of Lili, if it so pleased him. Of course he knew Marian Wallis would be most sympathetic on that subject; still he preferred solitude. She noted full well the Shade on his brow as he entered the room, and seizing his hand and wringing it in an excited manner, she began talking rapidly, I could not be SO near Without coming to see how you both are, especially as very probably we may never meet again. I am on my way to England to stay with some relations of my mother's; my father has already gone there, and we Shall most likely all three go back to Australia together.' Eustace Warrington sat alone in the large, barely furnished drawing-room, that he had taken for his music-room, playing the violin. Outside the westering sun shone brightly, but the Spanish blinds were lowered before all the windows, and the room was both dim and cool. Blindly she groped her way to Where she had been Sitting before, with some thing of the same instinct that sends a hare back to its 'form, ' but half-way she stumbled against someone, and looking up in quick alarm saw it was Jaynes, who must have come in from the door of her writing room, and perhaps had been standing there during the latter part of her interview with Mark Skene. Book excerpt: This book celebrates the work and career of the internationally renowned art historian, David Bindman, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, and is above all a tribute to him from his former students and colleagues. With essays on sculpture, drawings, watercolours and prints, the volume reflects the extraordinary range of Bindman's knowledge of works of art and his impact through his teaching and research on the understanding of British and European artistic developments from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. The essays cast light on questions of technique and stylistic change, patronage, collecting and iconography, and engage with issues such as the representation of race, gender, sexuality, political violence and propaganda, exile, and notions of the canon. The artists discussed here include Hogarth, Blake, Roubiliac, Thorvaldsen and Canova, all subjects of books by David Bindman, as well as Morland, Rowlandson, Gillray, Millais, Munch, Nevinson, and Heartfield.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically Canadians have considered themselves to be more or less free of racial prejudice. Although this conception has been challenged in recent years, it has not been completely dispelled. In Colour-Coded, Constance Backhouse illustrates the tenacious hold that white supremacy had on our legal system in the first half of this century, and underscores the damaging legacy of inequality that continues today. Backhouse presents detailed narratives of six court cases, each giving evidence of blatant racism created and enforced through law. The cases focus on Aboriginal, Inuit, Chinese-Canadian, and African-Canadian individuals, taking us from the criminal prosecution of traditional Aboriginal dance to the trial of members of the 'Ku Klux Klan of Kanada.' From thousands of possibilities, Backhouse has selected studies that constitute central moments in the legal history of race in Canada. Her selection also considers a wide range of legal forums, including administrative rulings by municipal councils, criminal trials before police magistrates, and criminal and civil cases heard by the highest courts in the provinces and by the Supreme Court of Canada. The extensive and detailed documentation presented here leaves no doubt that the Canadian legal system played a dominant role in creating and preserving racial discrimination. A central message of this book is that racism is deeply embedded in Canadian history despite Canada's reputation as a raceless society. Winner of the Joseph Brant Award, presented by the Ontario Historical Society
