Household-level energy consumption is a large ultimate driving force of a nation's energy use. Realizing a sustainable energy future will require behavioral change on the consumption side. In this context, examining the role of neighborhoods is important since neighborhoods are the building blocks of China's urban growth and the neighborhoods we build now will have a long-lasting effect on households' lifestyles of energy consumption. This research uses Jinan as a context for Chinese cities, and tries to understand how neighborhood design influences households' direct energy consumption, including travel and in-home energy use, through the influence on urban households' lifestyle. This research utilized an approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods, and finds that: (1) Household residential and vehicle ownership choice is made as a bundle reflecting the chosen lifestyle, making the combined evaluation of both travel and residential energy use possible; (2) Households belonging to different lifestyle groups have different decision-making mechanisms, suggesting the need for targeted design and policies; and, (3) Neighborhood design influences household direct energy consumption both through the ownership component choice and the usage component. By enabling more lifestyle bundle choices and providing new experiences and feedback, breaking old habits and creating new ones, energy-efficient neighborhood design can "lock in" households' lifestyles for a longer period of time via the lifestyle bundle choice effect. Design, therefore, likely has a larger and more robust impact in the long run than one-time or short-term incentives. This qualitative-quantitative mixed-method study contributes to a bridging of the literatures on consumer behavior, lifestyle, built environment and travel behavior, residential energy consumption, and energy demand analysis. It also provides new insights into the interaction of residence and mobility as a lifestyle bundle, and enriches the empirical findings in the developing world. For policy makers and designers, this research presents a theoretical basis for the development of potential evaluation tools and a standard for energy efficient neighborhood design and offers a pilot method for the selection, and suggested range, of indicators for energy efficient neighborhood design.

China's approach is complex and fast moving, and has resulted in the highly repetitive form of tower-in-park typology being applied throughout the country to develop new neighborhoods. This development strategy creates living environments that require households to adopt patterns of daily living that consume excessive resources and needlessly contribute to climate degradation by relying on mechanically controlled interior climates in neighborhoods requiring excessive dependence upon automobiles. This situation presents compelling opportunities for planners and designers to create a more energy efficient city form. What is required is an effective method of accurately predicting, during the design process, patterns of neighborhood energy consumption. This thesis presents guidelines for doing this. When partnered with the Energy Proforma© the guidelines can help make possible rapid yet highly energy efficient urban design and development at the neighborhood scale. Development of these guidelines drew upon the research of the Making the Clean Energy City in China Research Group led by Dennis Frenchman and Christopher Zegras. Other resources include literature describing previous approaches to neighborhood scale designs and guidelines, and an examination of current and emerging practices in the field of urban design and development. Finally, student projects are incorporated into the thesis and interwoven with the guidelines to illustrate the forms that potential developments might take.

Book excerpt: This thesis explores the impacts of neighborhood form and location on household transportation energy use in the context of Jinan, China. From a theoretical perspective, energy use is a derived outcome of activities, and households choose their travel patterns to maximize net utilities subject to constraints of time, budget and means. Neighborhood features presumably could 1) in the short-term directly influence households' choices of their travel patterns by changing incurred trip costs (disutilities) and realization benefits (positive utilities) among alternatives; 2) in the long-term indirectly influence patterns by affecting households' attitudes and their choices of vehicle ownership, both taken into account in the short-term utility maximization process. However, due to other complicating interactions among different aspects of travel patterns and other factors (e.g., housing choice), we cannot a priori determine what the impact of neighborhood on household travel energy use will be. This research takes an empirical approach to examining the relationship between the neighborhood and household travel energy use in Jinan, China, using 9 neighborhoods representing four different urban form typologies commonly found in Chinese cities: "traditional", "grid", "enclave", and "superblock." Data on neighborhood forms and households are obtained from visual survey, GIS digitalization and a household survey. Household transport energy uses (and greenhouse gas emissions) are derived from self-reported household weekly travel diaries. Descriptive analysis, multivariate regression analysis (i.e., OLS, TOBIT), and advanced two-step instrumental models (i.e., LOGIT+OLS/TOBIT) are employed. Results show that, all else equal, households living in the "superblock" neighborhoods consume more transportation energy than those living in the other neighborhood types, as they tend to own more cars and travel longer distance. The proximity to transit corridors and greater distance from the city center also apparently increase household transport energy use, although both impacts are somewhat minor, partially due to offsetting effects on car ownership. A number of effects of household socioeconomics, demographics and attitudes on transport energy use and car ownership are also identified. Overall, the analysis suggests that to help chart a more energy-efficient Chinese urban future, policymakers and urban designers should examine past neighborhood designs in China to find alternatives to the "superblock", focus on strategic infill development, possibly encourage e-bike use as substitute to larger motorized vehicles, improve the efficiency of public transport, and examine preference-shaping possibilities to influence more energy efficient lifestyles.

This thesis examines this phenomenon and asks the following questions: What accounts for the disparity between community interaction in superblock neighborhoods as compared to hutongs? Can urban design and the built environment play a role in fostering community and public life in contemporary Chinese neighborhoods? What lessons can be drawn for urban designers and planners in regards to the impact of neighborhood design on public life? The thesis begins by reviewing a history of major urban form changes throughout Beijing's history with a focus on neighborhood design. A field study undertaken in Beijing in January 2015 provides the primary data for the research, including resident interviews and observations of public space use in a hutong and two superblock neighborhoods. Using the data generated through the field study as well as secondary sources related to Chinese neighborhood design, a set of conclusions is drawn regarding how the built environment affects public life and community interaction in Beijing neighborhoods. Finally, a series of design recommendations is presented, focusing on the ways that urban design can support an active public life while meeting the high densities required in rapidly urbanizing contexts.
