Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume aims to reflect on the changing structure, experience and aspirations of European business as it approaches the Millennium, including chapters in issues including business scandals in the Weimar Republic, the evolution of management consultancies in Portugal and Spain and the British Public Sector. The yearbook exploits these changes by serving as a forum for debate in Europe and aims to bring work on individual countries to a wider, European audience. Responding to the challenge of globalization, cooperation within a single European market and an increasing interest in corporate governance and environmental issues, the yearbook broadens to include socio-political issues along with stimulating new types of scholarship among European business historians and new preservation strategies by business archivists.
Download or read book Women in Port written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-09-28 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades the scholarship on women’s roles and women’s worlds in the Atlantic basin c. 1400-1850 has grown considerably. Much of this work has understandably concentrated on specific groups of women, women living in particular regions or communities, or women sharing a common status in law or experience. Women in Port synthesizes the experiences of women from all quarters of the Atlantic world and from many walks of life, social statuses, and ethnicities by bringing together work by Atlantic world scholars on the cutting edge of their respective fields. Using a wide-ranging set of case studies that reveal women's richly textured lives, Women in Port helps reframe our understanding of women's possibilities in the Atlantic World. Contributors are Gayle Brunelle, Jodi Campbell, Douglas Catterall, Alexandra Parma Cook, Noble David Cook, Gordon DesBrisay, Júnia Ferreira Furtado, Sheryllynne Haggerty, Philip Havik, Stewart Royce King, Ernst Pijning, Ty Reese, Dominique Rogers, Martha Shattuck, Kimberly Todt, and Natalie Zacek.
Book Synopsis The 'Mother of all Trades' by : Milja van Tielhof
Download or read book The 'Mother of all Trades' written by Milja van Tielhof and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early-modern period, the Dutch called the grain trade on the Baltic the 'mother of all trades', as they considered it to be the basis of most of their trade and shipping and indeed the cornerstone of the Dutch economy. For a very long time the mass grain exports from the Baltic were dominated by the Dutch, and Amsterdam was the central entrepôt from which the grain was distributed over the Dutch hinterland and the rest of Europe. This book aims to present a general history of the 'mother of all trades' and particularly shows the fundamental importance for transaction costs, including the costs for transport, insurance and protection, the quality of the local services sector in Amsterdam, the influence of monetary and mercantile policies, and the efficiency of trade organization.
Book Synopsis Economic Growth in Europe Since 1945 by : N. F. R. Crafts
Download or read book Economic Growth in Europe Since 1945 written by N. F. R. Crafts and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-04-18 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling volume re-examines the topic of economic growth in Europe after the Second World War. The contributors approach the subject armed not only with new theoretical ideas, but also with the experience of the 1980s on which to draw. The analysis is based on both applied economics and on economic history. Thus, while the volume is greatly informed by insights from growth theory, emphasis is given to the presentation of chronological and institutional detail. The case study approach and the adoption of a longer-run perspective than is normal for economists allow new insights to be obtained. As well as including chapters that consider the experience of individual European countries, the book explores general European institutional arrangements and historical circumstances. The result is a genuinely comparative picture of post-war growth, with insights that do not emerge from standard cross-section regressions based on the post-1960 period.

Book Synopsis Peasants, Citizens and Soldiers by : Luuk de Ligt
Download or read book Peasants, Citizens and Soldiers written by Luuk de Ligt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed an intense debate concerning the size of the population of Roman Italy. This book argues that the combined literary, epigraphic and archaeological evidence supports the theory that early-imperial Italy had about six million inhabitants. At the same time the traditional view that the last century of the Republic witnessed a decline in the free Italian population is shown to be untenable. The main foci of its six chapters are: military participation rates; demographic recovery after the Second Punic War; the spread of slavery and the background to the Gracchan land reforms; the fast expansion of Italian towns after the Social War; emigration from Italy; and the fate of the Italian population during the first 150 years of the Principate.
Book Synopsis Maritime Risk Management by : Phillip Hellwege
Download or read book Maritime Risk Management written by Phillip Hellwege and published by Duncker & Humblot. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insurance is a legal, an actuarial and a financial product, and it is one out of many risk management strategies. It follows that its history can only be studied in the broader context of the development of such strategies, applying an interdisciplinary approach. The theme of the present volume is maritime risk management. After an overview over the history of insurance, the contributions to the present volume examine different maritime risk management strategies by adopting a variety of methodological approaches. Some contributions focus on normative provisions, others contrast practice with legal scholarship, or focus on the emergence of insurance companies as opposed to individual insurers. Again, other contributions give insights in marine insurance practice in specific cities or analyse insurance practice through the lens of specific insurance litigation. As to the time frame, the different contributions span from antiquity to the nineteenth century.
