Book excerpt: Australasians continue to let themselves down badly with their trans-Tasman ethos of “she’ll be right.” When a flurry of incidents occur underground across the two nations—shocking events that are inconceivable to the minds and hearts of Christians—people are slow to make connections. Way, way too slow . . . In a blend of frighteningly feasible political possibilities, we face in Negative Return the fact that as judiciousness is subsumed by raw emotion, nothing seems impossible.

Book excerpt: He's in over his head. And the one man he needs to trust the most is the one he’s been contracted to kill. Manu Juric's quick wit and knack for creating unexpected explosions has taken him a long way in the hit man business. At least, until he signs on to a job that might just be out of his league: taking out one of Bulari’s most notorious crime lords, Willem Jaantzen. After the attempt is horribly botched, Jaantzen spares Manu’s life in exchange for joining up with his motley crew for one small heist. There’s a reason Manu avoids teamwork: it’s the worst. And as the increasingly unpredictable job plunges Manu into an ever-tangling web of uneasy dangers and bristly egos, he realizes he’s going to need to find some allies — fast. But who do you trust, when everyone's a criminal? NEGATIVE RETURN is part of Jessie Kwak’s Durga System series, a fast-paced series of standalone gangster sci-fi stories set in a far-future world where humans may have left their home planet to populate the stars, but they haven’t managed to leave behind their vices. And that’s very good for business.

Book Synopsis Affect Imagery Consciousness by : Tomkins
Download or read book Affect Imagery Consciousness written by Tomkins and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 1963-01-15 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tomkins' magnum opus, Affect, Imagery, Consciousness, was published by Springer Publishing Company in four volumes over 30 years. When Tomkins began writing the book in the 1950's, American psychology was dominated by psychoanalytic and behaviorist theories - neither of which placed much importance on the role of basic emotions in everyday human behavior. Tomkins challenged the status quo by developing - over the span of nearly 2,000 pages -- a theory of consciousness and motivation that placed emotion at the core of the human experience. Because so few psychologists were studying emotion at that time, Tomkins drew liberally from other academic disciplines to help formulate his ideas and support his arguments: evolutionary biology, ethology, cybernetics, literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis, and neurophysiology, among others. In the process, Tomkins practically invented the field of "nonverbal behavior" through close observation of emotional expressions in people, including his own infant son. His work was a brilliantly eccentric pastiche of ideas that adhered to no strict disciplinary or ideological boundaries. In time, however, AIC came to prominence through the research of his disciples, notably Paul Ekman and Carroll Izzard, who went on to become major researchers in the psychology of emotion. Today, Tomkins's book is influential not just in psychology but in philosophy, sociology, communication studies, even in "affective computing. Springer Publishing Company is pleased to continue to offer this magisterial work in four volumes.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Valuation and Non-Gaussian Risks in Finance by : Dilip B. Madan
Download or read book Nonlinear Valuation and Non-Gaussian Risks in Finance written by Dilip B. Madan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to risk as the economic horizon goes to zero and risk is seen as an exposure to a change in state that may occur instantaneously at any time? All activities that have been undertaken statically at a fixed finite horizon can now be reconsidered dynamically at a zero time horizon, with arrival rates at the core of the modeling. This book, aimed at practitioners and researchers in financial risk, delivers the theoretical framework and various applications of the newly established dynamic conic finance theory. The result is a nonlinear non-Gaussian valuation framework for risk management in finance. Risk-free assets disappear and low risk portfolios must pay for their risk reduction with negative expected returns. Hedges may be constructed to enhance value by exploiting risk interactions. Dynamic trading mechanisms are synthesized by machine learning algorithms. Optimal exposures are designed for option positioning simultaneously across all strikes and maturities.

From Norman Vincent Peale to the ubiquitous smiley face, optimism has become an essential part of American society. In this long-overdue book, psychologist Julie Norem offers convincing evidence that, for many people, positive thinking is an ineffective strategy -- and often an obstacle -- for successfully coping with the anxieties and pressures of modern life. Drawing on her own research and many vivid case histories, Norem provides evidence of the powerful benefits of "defensive pessimism," which has helped millions to manage anxiety and perform their best work.
