Book excerpt: Discover the essential thinking tools you’ve been missing with The Great Mental Models series by Shane Parrish, New York Times bestselling author and the mind behind the acclaimed Farnam Street blog and “The Knowledge Project” podcast. This first book in the series is your guide to learning the crucial thinking tools nobody ever taught you. Time and time again, great thinkers such as Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett have credited their success to mental models–representations of how something works that can scale onto other fields. Mastering a small number of mental models enables you to rapidly grasp new information, identify patterns others miss, and avoid the common mistakes that hold people back. The Great Mental Models: Volume 1, General Thinking Concepts shows you how making a few tiny changes in the way you think can deliver big results. Drawing on examples from history, business, art, and science, this book details nine of the most versatile, all-purpose mental models you can use right away to improve your decision making and productivity. This book will teach you how to: Avoid blind spots when looking at problems. Find non-obvious solutions. Anticipate and achieve desired outcomes. Play to your strengths, avoid your weaknesses, … and more. The Great Mental Models series demystifies once elusive concepts and illuminates rich knowledge that traditional education overlooks. This series is the most comprehensive and accessible guide on using mental models to better understand our world, solve problems, and gain an advantage.

Book excerpt: I never planned on returning to Alabama, but circumstances brought me here after years of being gone. Though Lawton Ridge is my hometown, I was hesitant to go back because of her -my sister's best friend. The last time we were together, she was eighteen, and I was a broken soldier transitioning to civilian life. Gemma wrote to me while I was overseas and we developed a bond I hadn't anticipated. I crushed her heart the day I left, something I've never forgotten. But now that her dad is my new boss, life just got way more complicated. Too sweet, too innocent, too good for a guy like me-I should walk away again. After serving five years in prison for something I didn't do, I trust no one, but Gemma gradually breaks down my walls and exposes the pain I've hidden underneath. For her own sake, I should keep my distance, but it's nearly impossible when I hear her sweet humming while I work and she slowly draws me back in. It's a battle I didn't train for, and one I'll lose if I don't keep my restraint-especially since she's engaged to another man. KEEPING YOU AWAY is a slow-burn, angsty second chance romance with lots of small-town, Southern drama. It's book 1 in the Tyler & Gemma duet and must be read first.

Book excerpt: This is a journey through love, romance, passion, and heartache. The journey of life, which started at fourteen years of age, would take Simone’ and her family into a maze of pain, heartache, and separation because of choices in love and decisions made while she was young and inexperienced, even to the decisions made after her marriage to protect her family. She found herself in an endless vortex, a downward spiral laced with fear because of the fervent love she had for her family. She felt trapped like a bird in a cage. These decisions were almost detrimental to her daughter and her husband whom she loved with all her soul. Instead of protecting those she loved, her decisions had painful consequences rather than healing remedies. The influencing actions and devastating circumstances all surrounded and involved one woman, who wore a veil of mystery, even to her Father.

Book excerpt: A few premonitory dreams put our hero on a course of events that bend his mind in unpleasant ways. From saving his friends, and saving the god of a long extinct religious cult, to saving the entire planet and its population, our hero struggles to save everybody and everything but himself, and then he discovers he needs to save himself the most. Secrets are the foundation of our hero's life and they are the most benefic thing for him, but fighting to reveal them all puts our hero on a path of self-hatred, self-destruction, and self-endarkenment. And nothing goes well for our hero until he decides that he needs to defeat the monster inside himself above anything else. Quote: "Light doesn't kill shadows, doesn't make them disappear, it just blinds you. Shadows are always there, always will be, they are cast by things, that sometimes cannot be disposed of. Ignoring or trying to forget never solved the problem. The problem you have when you always look at every shadow with a panic alertness expecting the monster to come out of it at any moment. Learn to live with shadows around you, with darkness in you. It's not always bad." Sometimes you do not need to defeat, you can also assimilate in order to adapt and grow.

Book excerpt: As the world becomes increasingly complex, young people are confronted with greater challenges and higher expectations. They are hurled into an age of technology where they are given instant access to new information at a startling rate. This abundance of knowledge is seldom met with the wisdom and virtue necessary to navigate the intricate aspects of life. Thus, in Between Two Worlds, Alan Hidalgo presents a multicultural collection of ten novels tailored for young adults that abound with timeless truths that will never fade. In this unique anthology, Hidalgo seeks to inspire others to seek a life of purpose and meaning by offering profound insights into human behavior. Insights which guide multiculturalism not as an ideology where all cultural aspects must be accepted and approved, but instead which lead to universal truths that result in a broader worldview, enabling readers to openly and objectively perceive both the beauty and the ugliness found in all nationalities. Each of the ten novels contains an intriguing plot that brings the reader face-to-face with a diverse collection of fictional characters as they search for identity, honesty, and courage amidst a world often characterized by confusion, deceit, and fear. The Between Two Worlds Anthology is a multilingual literary work distinguished by its realistic fiction and life relevance. It is also the foundational text for the classroom resources Between Two Worlds Student Workbook and Between Two Worlds Instructor Manual, which are ideal for secondary and postsecondary educational levels.

Book excerpt: Elizabeth Barber is crossing the Atlantic by liner with her perfectly adequate boyfriend, Derek, who might be planning to propose. In fleeing the UK — temporarily — Elizabeth may also be in flight from her past and the charismatic Arthur, once her partner in what she came to see as a series of crimes. Together they acted as fake mediums, perfecting the arcane skills practiced by effective frauds. Elizabeth finally rejected what once seemed an intoxicating game. Arthur continued his search for the right way to do wrong. He now subsidizes free closure for the traumatized and dispossessed by preying on the super-rich. The pair still meet occasionally, for weekends of sexual oblivion, but their affection lacerates as much as it consoles. Elizabeth hadn't, however, expected the other man on the boat. As her voyage progresses, Elizabeth's past is revealed, and codes slowly form and break as communication deepens. It's time for her to discover who are the true deceivers and who are the truly deceived. But is the book itself — a fiction which may not always be lying — deceiving the reader? Offering illusions and false trails, magical numbers and redemptive humour, this is a novel about what happens when we are misled and when we are true: an extraordinarily intricate and intimate journey into our minds and hearts undertaken by a writer of great gifts — a maker of wonders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Writing Daddy's GirlAfter I had been through many versions of the manuscript (written over almost a decade) I decided that for this book to have validity it would be necessary not only to show the past but also to give a picture of the present-illustrating how the events of my childhood affected me at the time, as well as later in life as an adult and a parent.Given that I wrote the book in the first place as a document that I hoped would be useful to others who'd suffered abuse and also to professionals, I felt it was very important to present detailed portraits of the child I was and the woman I grew to be (in large measure as a result of trying to cope with the long-term effects of the abuse.) As well, I thought it was vital to illustrate how fallout from the abuse can be felt down through the generations, if one fails to exercise awareness and caution. So the book weaves back and forth between past and present (the present being 1979, when the final version was completed). I also had to decide at the very start whether I was going to dole out snippets of truth or be completely truthful and address the issue as fully as I was able. There seemed no point to writing an autobiographical account of incest if I was going to be anything less than completely truthful. It was not difficult to tell the truth, nor was the writing of the book a cathartic experience, as many have imagined it to be. The fact is that I had long-since confronted my personal demons and had managed to relegate the past to the past-something exceedingly difficult for many victims of any/all forms of abuse to do.A few years ago in correcting the page proofs of a new British edition of the book, I reread DADDY'S GIRL, and was gratified by what I'd written. (Often, with my novels, I am not at all happy when I reread them.) I think that as an author I have little, if any, objectivity about my work once it's completed and so am not necessarily a good judge of it. But I am proud of DADDY'S GIRL. Since its publication in 1980 it has been of help to a lot of people. And, ultimately, it's my way of returning some measure of the kindness and attention people showed me when I was working my way along the rough roadway toward my future.
