Book excerpt: "An instrumented seabed lander was deployed in the head of Logan Canyon in August 2005 to provide the first observations of near-bed hydrodynamics and sediment transport processes in a canyon on the Scotian Slope. The lander data show strong up- and down-canyon current pulses that reach 30-40 cm/s and typically last 2-5 hours. Temporal changes of the current pulses and their correlation with tidal elevation and temperature suggest that the observed high-frequency strong current pules were internal tide bores formed due to the focusing of tidal energy by the geometry of the canyon. The strong currents of the internal tidal bores caused frequent bedload and suspended-load transport events in which maximum suspended sediment concentration reached ~100 mg/l. The strong bottom currents of the internal tidal bores and the resulting intensive sediment transport could be a potential mechanism for sediment mobilization and turbidity current formation in canyons on the Scotian Slope margin"--Summary provided by publisher.

Book Synopsis Turbulence, Sediment Transport, Erosion, and Sandbar Beach Failure Processes in Grand Canyon by : Laura Verónica Alvarez Rueda

This book was released on 2015 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examines lateral separation zones and sand bar slope stability using two methods: a parallelized turbulence resolving model and full-scale laboratory experiments. Lateral flow separation occurs in rivers where banks exhibit strong curvature, for instance canyon rivers, sharp meanders and river confluences. In the Colorado River, downstream Glen Canyon Dam, lateral separation zones are the principal storage of sandbars. Maximum ramp rates have been imposed to Glen Canyon Dam operation to minimize mass loss of sandbars. Assessment of the effect of restricting maximum ramp rates in bar stability is conducted using multiple laboratory experiments. Results reveal that steep sandbar faces would rapidly erode by mass failure and seepage erosion to stable slopes, regardless of dam discharge ramp rates. Thus, continued erosion of sand bars depends primarily of turbulent flow and waves. A parallelized, three-dimensional, turbulence resolving model is developed to study flow structures in two lateral separation zones located along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon. The model employs a Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) technique where variables larger than the grid scale are fully resolved, while Sub-Grid-Scale (SGS) variables are modeled. The DES-3D model is validated using ADCP flow measurements and skill metric scores show predictive capabilities of simulated flow. The model reproduces the patterns and magnitudes of flow velocity in lateral recirculation zones, including size and position of primary and secondary eddy cells and return current. Turbulence structures with a predominately vertical axis of vorticity are observed in the shear layer, becoming three-dimensional without preferred orientation downstream. The DES-3D model is coupled with a sediment advection-diffusion formulation, wherein advection is provided by the DES velocity field minus particles settling velocity, and diffusion is provided by the SGS. Results show a lateral recirculation zone having a continuous export and import of sediment from and to the main channel following a pattern of high frequency pulsations of positive deposition fluxes. These high frequency pulsations play an important role to prevent an oversupply of sediment within the lateral separation zones. Improved predictive capabilities are achieved with this model when compared with previous two- and three-dimensional quasi steady and steady models.
Book Synopsis Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences by : Yasuhiro Yamada
Download or read book Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences written by Yasuhiro Yamada and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-13 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Submarine mass movements represent major offshore geohazards due to their destructive and tsunami-generation potential. This potential poses a threat to human life as well as to coastal, nearshore and offshore engineering structures. Recent examples of catastrophic submarine landslide events that affected human populations (including tsunamis) are numerous; e.g., Nice airport in 1979, Papua-New Guinea in 1998, Stromboli in 2002, Finneidfjord in 1996, and the 2006 and 2009 failures in the submarine cable network around Taiwan. The Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 also generated submarine landslides that may have amplified effects of the devastating tsunami. Given that 30% of the World’s population live within 60 km of the coast, the hazard posed by submarine landslides is expected to grow as global sea level rises. This elevated awareness of the need for better understanding of submarine landslides is coupled with great advances in submarine mapping, sampling and monitoring technologies. Laboratory analogue and numerical modeling capabilities have also developed significantly of late. Multibeam sonar, 3D seismic reflection, and remote and autonomous underwater vehicle technologies provide hitherto unparalleled imagery of the geology beneath the oceans, permitting investigation of submarine landslide deposits in great detail. Increased and new access to drilling, coring, in situ measurements and monitoring devices allows for ground-thruth of geophysical data and provides access to samples for geotechnical laboratory experiments and information on in situ strength and effective stress conditions of underwater slopes susceptible to fail. Great advances in numerical simulation techniques of submarine landslide kinematics and tsunami propagation, particularly since the 2004 Sumatra tsunami, have also lead to increased understanding and predictability of submarine landslide consequences. This volume consists of the latest scientific research by international experts in geological, geophysical, engineering and environmental aspects of submarine mass failure, focused on understanding the full spectrum of challenges presented by submarine mass movements and their consequences.

Book Synopsis Currents in Monterey Submarine Canyon by : John Edward Hollister
Download or read book Currents in Monterey Submarine Canyon written by John Edward Hollister and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time series were obtained from two current meters near bottom on one mooring in Monterey Submarine Canyon. These records were analyzed to determine the general character of the currents, the volume transport at different levels above the canyon floor, the power spectral estimates of the upcanyon and cross-caynon directional components, and the coherence between directional components. Current speed variations appeared as a series of peaks occurring every 5 to 6 hr with maxima of 17 to 21 cm/sec. Current directions oscillated with a discernible period of about 12 hr. Currents 30 m above the bottom were aligned nearly along the canyon axis; currents 60 m above the bottom were nearly perpendicular to the canyon axis. The spectral analysis indicated tides as a major driving force of the deep currents, but also indicated the presence of other forcing functions, possibly internal waves, with shorter periods. The coherence between instruments was low, suggesting the possible presence of a near-bottom boundary layer, or that significant signal deterioration was caused by noise.
Book Synopsis Recent Advances in Models of Siliciclastic Shallow-marine Stratigraphy by : Gary J. Hampson
Download or read book Recent Advances in Models of Siliciclastic Shallow-marine Stratigraphy written by Gary J. Hampson and published by SEPM Soc for Sed Geology. This book was released on 2008 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siliciclastic shallow-marine deposits record the interface between land and sea, and its response to a variety of forcing mechanisms: physical process regime, the internal dynamics of coastal and shelfal depositional systems, relative sea level, sediment flux, tectonic setting, and climate. These deposits have long been the subject of conceptual stratigraphic models that seek to explain the interplay between these various forcing mechanisms, and their preservation in the stratigraphic record. This volume arose from an SEPM research conference on shoreline-shelf stratigraphy that was held in Grand Junction, Colorado, on August 24-28, 2004. The aim of the resulting volume is to highlight the development over the last 15 years of the stratigraphic concepts and models that are used to interpret siliciclastic marginal-marine, shallow-marine, and shelf deposits.

Book Synopsis Physics of Tsunamis by : Boris Levin
Download or read book Physics of Tsunamis written by Boris Levin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-27 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Till the very end of the twentieth century tsunami waves (or ‘waves in a harbour’, translated from Japanese) were considered an extremely rare and exotic natural p- nomenon, originating in the ocean and unexpectedly falling upon the seaside as gigantic waves. The 26th of December 2004, when tsunami waves wiped out, in a single day, more than 250,000 human lives, mourned in many countries, turned out to be a tragic date for all mankind. The authors of this book, who have studied tsunami waves for many years, - tended it to be a systematic exposition of modern ideas concerning • The mechanisms of tsunami wave generation • The peculiarities of tsunami wave propagation in the open ocean and of how waves run-up beaches • Methods for tsunami wave registration and the operation of a tsunami warning system • The mechanisms of other catastrophic processes in the ocean related to the se- mic activity of our planet The authors considered their main goal to be the creation of book prese- ing modern knowledge of tsunami waves and of other catastrophes in the ocean to scienti?c researchers and specialists in geophysics, oceanography, seismology, hydroacoustics, geology, geomorphology, civil and seaside engineering, postgr- uate students and students of relevant professions.
