Book excerpt: Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) frequently receive requests to provide aesthetically pleasing traffic rails for use on select bridges and roadways. TxDOT, in response to providing context sensitive design alternatives, initiated a project to develop additional aesthetically pleasing rail alternatives. Under a previous TxDOT project, the F411 bridge rail was constructed and crash tested to Test Level 3 (TL-3). The TL-3 test is a 4405-lb (2000 kg) pickup impacting the railing at 25 degrees and 62.2 mi/h (100 krn/h). This test requires both containment and stability, and non-overturning. Since some breakage of the parapet is possible, potential for vehicle snagging is likely. Vehicle snagging can contribute to vehicle instabilities in the redirection sequence and potential rollover. The TxDOT F411 bridge rail contained and redirected the vehicle, which remained upright during and after the collision period. The bridge rail met the required specifications for NCHRP Report 350 test 3-11. The objective of this research is the full-scale crash test and evaluation of the F411 to Test Level 4 (TL-4). The most direct approach for accomplishing the objectives of this task is to perform a full-scale TL-4 crash test of this railing design. The TL-4 vehicle is a single-unit box-van truck impacting the railing at 15 degrees and 49.7 mi/h (80 krn/h). While containment is required, overturning of the vehicle 90 degrees is an acceptable test outcome. The TxDOT F411 bridge rail performed acceptably for NCHRP Report 350 test 4-12. Based on the performance of the F411 bridge rail in the full-scale crash test to TL-4 test conditions, the F411 may be used where containment of 18,000 lb single-unit trucks is desired.

Book excerpt: Barrier installations are warranted (or justified) only at highway locations where the consequence of an errant vehicle leaving the roadway is judged to be more hazardous than the impact with the barrier installation. A six degree-of-freedom mathematical model was found to be useful in describing dynamic behavior of a vehicle during impact. Predictions of vehicle and barrier behavior correlated with results obtained from full-scale crash tests. Crash conditions simulated with a computer were used to identify and evaluate vehicle static and dynamic as well as barrier parameters. Vehicle weight, yaw mass moment of inertia, and deformation constant were found to be significant.

Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to pavement design, construction, management, and research engineers, highway safety officials, and others concerned with pavement friction characteristics. It describes the current state of the practice and discusses the methods used for evaluating wet pavement friction characteristics of new and restored pavements. This synthesis reviews models used for measuring and evaluating friction and texture, causes for friction changes over time, and aggregate and mix design to provide adequate friction. Also presented are construction and surface restoration practices for providing good pavement surface characteristics. In addition, considerations of noise and ride quality are discussed when compromise may be required.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive analysis and review was undertaken of available data and information applicable to the problem of improving safety at highway rail grade crossings. A probability model was developed for forecasting the probability of accident occurrence at crossings. The model allows the separate prediction of expected accidents which involve trains and accidents which do not involve trains but occur at the crossing.

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to geologists; geotechnical, construction, and maintenance engineers; other state department of transportation (DOT) personnel involved with the planning, design, and permit issuance for conduits beneath roadways; local transportation agencies; utility contractors and consultants; and trenchless construction equipment manufacturers. It describes the current state of the practice for the use of trenchless technology for installing conduits beneath roadways. Trenchless construction is a process of installing, rehabilitating, or replacing underground utility systems without open-cut excavation. The synthesis is focused on trenchless technology for new installations. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the trenchless installation technologies (methods, materials, and equipment) currently employed by state DOTs and other agencies to install conduits beneath roadways. The synthesis presents data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of transportation agencies. For each technology identified, information is provided to describe the range of applications, basis for technique selection, site specific design factors to be considered, relative costs, common environmental issues, and example specifications. In addition, information on emerging technologies and research needs is presented.
