Book excerpt: Navigating Life with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis provides accessible, comprehensive, and up-to-date information about the challenges patients, family members, and caregivers face when confronted by ALS, a disease that affects approximately 5,600 Americans every year, with as many as 30,000 people managing the disease at any given time. ALS is a difficult disease for the patient and is also challenging for the caregiver and family as there are many questions, issues relating to care, and problems to manage. This guide covers all aspects of managing ALS, from the onset of symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, and coping strategies, to the use of home health care or hospice, and new research in the field. The book also sheds lights on difficult topics, such as end-of-life care and managing legal affairs. Navigating Life with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is unique because it covers two perspectives: one author is a neurologist with 30 years of experience treating ALS patients, and the other author experienced first-hand the issues in providing care for a parent with ALS. Formatted in a question-and-answer style, peppered throughout with patient stories, and with sections devoted to family members and caregivers, this compassionate resource provides guidance to those seeking to understand how to live with this disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Sclerosis is a devastating, incurable disease that afflicts about one in a thousand North Americans. Striking in the prime of life, it is the most common debilitating neurological disorder of people between the ages of 20 and 40. Eighty percent of patients suffer from cognitive impairments, seventy percent from sexual dysfunction, and fifty percent from depression. Few people are prepared for the emotional impact of this unpredictable, disabling chronic condition. Faced with a life-long progressive illness, patients typically experience fear, anger, sadness, grief, guilt, low self-esteem and sexual dysfunction. Half of all MS patients suffer from clinical depression. Other invisible symptoms, such as cognitive impairments and severe fatigue, often leave patients feeling misunderstood and alone. The emotional affects of MS can be more crippling than the physical challenges, yet little has been written on this topic. MS AND YOUR FEELINGS is the first book to specifically address the emotional pain caused by MS. Psychotherapist and MS patient, Allison Shadday, offers readers effective strategies for coping with the psychological trauma of this disease. Shadday shares real-life MS success stories and offers insightful professional advice derived from years of counseling hundreds of chronically ill patients. Her book offers readers hope, inspiration and validation, and teaches them: ·How to come to terms with an MS diagnosis ·How to recognize and overcome negative emotional responses to MS ·Techniques to identify and manage stress triggers that can impact MS symptoms ·Ways to minimize MS-related fatigue ·Strategies for coping with fear, guilt, anger, loss, depression and isolation ·Steps to enhance intimacy and build support networks ·How to deal with cognitive challenges ·Tips for increasing self-esteem ·How to develop a greater sense of emotional security and stability ·Latest information about new treatment options and promising research In addition, noted neurologist and MS expert Dr. Stanley Cohan, Director of the Pacific Northwest Multiple Sclerosis Center writes about the importance of treating the emotional symptoms of MS and discusses the promising future of MS drug research. Full of immediate, useful solutions, MS AND YOUR FEELINGS is an invaluable guide for patients, their loved ones and MS health care professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic and often disabling disease of the nervous system, affecting about 1 million people worldwide. Even though it has been known for over a hundred years, no cause or cure has yet been discovered-but now there is hope. New therapies have been shown to slow the disease progress in some patients, and the pace of discoveries about the cellular machinery of the brain and spinal cord has accelerated. This book presents a comprehensive overview of multiple sclerosis today, as researchers seek to understand its processes, develop therapies that will slow or halt the disease and perhaps repair damage, offer relief for specific symptoms, and improve the abilities of MS patients to function in their daily lives. The panel reviews existing knowledge and identifies key research questions, focusing on: Research strategies that have the greatest potential to understand the biological mechanisms of recovery and to translate findings into specific strategies for therapy. How people adapt to MS and the research needed to improve the lives of people with MS. Management of disease symptoms (cognitive impairment, depression, spasticity, vision problems, and others). The committee also discusses ways to build and financially support the MS research enterprise, including a look at challenges inherent in designing clinical trials. This book will be important to MS researchers, research funders, health care advocates for MS research and treatment, and interested patients and their families.

Book excerpt: "Since you have opened this book, you or a close friend or family member have likely been impacted by the upsetting and frightening diagnosis of dementia. You may have been told about this diagnosis in a number of different ways. Either the term dementia was used, or other words associated with or more specific than dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy Body disease, frontotemporal dementia, or Pick's disease, were used. You may even have been misinformed at first and told that you were simply facing the normal changes of aging, such as forgetfulness or mild depression. Sometimes these terms are relatable based on others we know who have been affected by them. But they can be shocking to hear and hard to understand when talking about yourself or a loved one. Even more difficult is that none of the most common forms of dementia currently have treatments that can cure or slow the disease"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a first-hand account of my journey with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). As I went through the stages of diagnosis to disease management, it became apparent that while there were numerous books written on the subject of MS, most focused on the medical or clinical aspects of the disease. While these sources were certainly empirically informative, they were coldly lacking in the emotional preparation and guidance that I needed. There is a profoundly personal side to any life changing diagnosis, and this is where the true struggle resided for me. I couldn't turn to anything of a nonclinical substance that would help guide me through the emotional and mental turmoil I was experiencing. There was so much I wanted to know not only from my doctors, but also from other people with MS. As I started navigating my way through things in a bit of a clumsy fashion, I was inspired to write down my thoughts and insight as that new person with MS and what they would likely want to know not only about the disease but also about themselves. This book covers the time I reflected over the year leading up to my diagnosis and the first year after receiving my diagnosis with MS. The book is divided into three distinct parts. Part One looks at a wide variety of personal topics and experiences and the impact Multiple Sclerosis has played on each. There are times of frustration, denial and sorrow. There are topics of extreme support and heroes that have stepped up in my journey. There are character traits that can be of benefit and others that can be detrimental. The intent has been to capture these aspects, feelings and thought provoking situations and how MS has touched it all. In a way, this section is a reflection of my own personal struggle through the initial blow of learning about my MS and coming to accept it as a part of who I now am. Part Two focuses on moving from a position of understanding to truly accepting what MS means in my life. Acceptance doesn't just mean sitting still, but gaining a clear mind on how you are going to choose to live with MS. Acceptance is not just formed from the perspective of being that someone with MS, but it is formed by the people around me as well. Friends, coworkers, and family all will be affected by this disease in some way, and it is vitally important that we prepare to help everyone touched by MS come to a pure sense of acceptance. Part Three is all about capitalizing on the sense of acceptance and beginning to focus on those specific efforts and the needed energy to beat it. Knowing there is no cure today does not mean that I just give up. There are so many things that can be done to maintain a "normal" life, but it takes work and a proactive frame of mind. Like many struggles we can all face in our lives, MS is really no different. There is almost always a way to make a situation like this better, but it does take time, effort, and determination. From a personal perspective, this book intends to do two things...to help others better understand the everyday experiences of a person with MS, to know what the disease takes away, and also what the disease gives. The second, to help me as a person with MS move beyond merely accepting this disease and knowing that regardless of what limitations I may end up with, that I can contribute to a better result, a brighter future for someone, be a better father and husband to my family, and look back and feel good about my life...every minute of it. Life can be so much more if I can find the way to live with MS in my life rather than find a way to fit my life into MS. My wish to the second point is that it will do the same for you.
