Book Synopsis Naven or the Other Self by : Michael Houseman
Download or read book Naven or the Other Self written by Michael Houseman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, the author propose a novel theory of ritual action founded upon an in-depth study of the wide variety of behaviors that the Iatmul of Papua New Guinea identify as naven: a transvestism rite studied by Gregory Bateson in the 1930s and documented by other anthropologists since. Ritual performance is shown to involve the construction of complex relational networks entailing the condensation of contradictory modes of relationship in accordance with over-arching interactive forms. In this volume, inquiry into the history of anthropology, detailed ethnographic analysis and theoretical discussion are combined. The first part examines Bateson's and others' understandings of naven; the second offers a reinterpretation of this ritual in the light of new ethnographic data; and the third proposes a general approach to the analysis of ritual and suggests how this perspective may be applied elsewhere.

Book excerpt: "Naven" is the name of a peculiar ritual practiced by Iatmul, a head-hunting tribe of New Guinea.Th e ceremony is performed to congratulate members of the tribe upon the completion of notable accomplishments, among which homicide ranks highest. Ordinarily this tribe insists upon an extreme contrast between the sexes, but in the "naven" ceremony, tranvestitism and ritual homosexuality are represented. The "naven" serves in this book as a motive around which the author has constructed one of the most influential works of field anthropology ever written.

Book Synopsis Chaos in the Humanities by : Patrick Brady
Download or read book Chaos in the Humanities written by Patrick Brady and published by New Paradigm Press (TN). This book was released on 1994 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deconstructionist, postmodernist era is over & the 1990s are alive with an exciting new, uniquely interdisciplinary avant-garde based on chaos & complexity theory which, in its relationism, holism, & constructionism, is very different from what preceded it. This volume provides the educated reader with a clear, general introduction to this new avant-garde. The criteria for chaos theory are extrapolated from mathematics & physics: firstly, concealed order, self-similarity, nonlinearity, constrained randomness & entropy; secondly, feedback mechanisms & holism; those for complexity theory are emergence & negentropy. The practical application of these criteria to the humanities & social sciences, notably literary theory & criticism & the analysis of culture, is then illustrated by a series of essays on literary works by Robert Frost, Tennessee Williams, & Jean Giono & on the philosophical & anthropological theories of Rene Girard, Michel Serres & others, & a review article on works by N. Katherine Hayles (CHAOS & ORDER), M. Mitchell Waldrop (COMPLEXITY), & Roger Lewin (COMPLEXITY). If you ever wanted to grasp quickly & painlessly the essence of this theory, this is the volume for you. It tells you "everything you ever wanted to know about chaos & complexity theory & were afraid to ask".
