Download or read book Naval Power and Expeditionary Wars written by Bruce A. Elleman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-09 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nature and character of naval expeditionary warfare, in particular in peripheral campaigns, and the contribution of such campaigns to the achievement of strategic victory. Naval powers, which can lack the massive ground forces to win in the main theatre, often choose a secondary theatre accessible to them by sea and difficult for their enemies to reach by land, giving the sea power and its expeditionary forces the advantage. The technical term for these theatres is ‘peripheral operations.’ The subject of peripheral campaigns in naval expeditionary warfare is central to the British, the US, and the Australian way of war in the past and in the future. All three are reluctant to engage large land forces because of the high human and economic costs. Instead, they rely as much as possible on sea and air power, and the latter is most often in the form of carrier-based aviation. In order to exert pressure on their enemies, they have often opened additional theaters in on-going, regional, and civil wars. This book contains thirteen case studies by some of the foremost naval historians from the United States, Great Britain, and Australia whose collected case studies examine the most important peripheral operations of the last two centuries. This book will be of much interest to students of naval warfare, military history, strategic studies and security studies.

Download or read book Naval Transformation Roadmap 2003: Assured Access and Power Projection ... from the Sea written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naval forces are unique in their contribution to the nation's defense. Versatile naval expeditionary forces are the nation's first responders, relied upon to establish the tempo of action, control the early phases of hostilities, and set conditions for decisive resolution. America's ability to protect its homeland, assure its friends and allies, deter potential adversaries, and project decisive combat power depends on maritime superiority. The transformation of naval forces is dedicated to greatly expanding the sovereign options available worldwide to the President across the full spectrum of warfare by exploiting U.S. control of the sea. The result of this transformation will be a Navy-Marine Corps Team providing sustainable, immediately employable U.S. combat power as part of a transformed joint force ready to meet any challenge. As directed in the Defense Secretary's "Transformation Planning Guidance," the Department of the Navy presents its first annual update to the Naval Transformation Road map. Whereas the first roadmap submission in July 2002 described the framework for naval capability development, this roadmap update describes the key naval concepts, capabilities, initiatives, processes, and programs that guide the efforts of the Navy-Marine Corps Team in support of the critical operational goals described in the 2001 Quadrennial Defense Review Report and the new joint operating and functional concepts currently being formulated.

Book Synopsis Naval Expeditionary Logistics by : Committee on Naval Expeditionary Logistics
Download or read book Naval Expeditionary Logistics written by Committee on Naval Expeditionary Logistics and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-02-23 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the request of the Chief of Naval Operations, the National Research Council (NRC) conducted a study to determine the technological requirements, operational changes, and combat service support structure necessary to land and support forces ashore under the newly evolving Navy and Marine Corps doctrine. The Committee on Naval Expeditionary Logistics, operating under the auspices of the NRC's Naval Studies Board, was appointed to (1) evaluate the packaging, sealift, and distribution network and identify critical nodes and operations that affect timely insertion of fuels, ammunition, water, medical supplies, food, vehicles, and maintenance parts and tool blocks; (2) determine specific changes required to relieve these critical nodes and support forces ashore, from assault through follow-on echelonment; and (3) present implementable changes to existing support systems, and suggest the development of innovative new systems and technologies to land and sustain dispersed units from the shoreline to 200 miles inland. In the course of its study, the committee soon learned that development of OMFTS is not yet at a stage to allow, directly, detailed answers to many of these questions. As a result, the committee addressed the questions in terms of the major logistics functions of force deployment, force sustainment, and force medical support, and the fundamental logistics issues related to each of these functions.
Book Synopsis Naval Transformation, Ground Forces, and the Expeditionary Impulse by : Geoffrey Till
Download or read book Naval Transformation, Ground Forces, and the Expeditionary Impulse written by Geoffrey Till and published by Strategic Studies Institute. This book was released on 2006 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviewing the past, present, and future contribution of maritime forces to the conduct of expeditionary operations, the author concludes that the importance of this contribution is growing. He considers the diplomatic and "good order" roles of maritime forces which enable such operations in the first place. He reviews contemporary naval thinking about the nature and the relevance of sea control, and examines changes in the way maritime power may be projected ashore. Finally, the author analyses the extent to which future sea-basing can enable expeditionary forces can meet the challenges of the 21st century. Using past and recent experience, he demonstrates how important maritime outcomes are to the achievement and, equally important, the consolidation of victories ashore. Accordingly, navies around the world are having to adjust their plans and their priorities in order to meet these challenges.
