Book excerpt: From the golden age of art movies and underground cinema to X-rated porn, splatter films, and midnight movies, this breathtaking thriller is a tour de force of cinematic fact and fantasy, full of metaphysical mysteries that will haunt the dreams of every moviegoer. Jonathan Gates could not have anticipated that his student studies would lead him to uncover the secret history of the movies--a tale of intrigue, deception, and death that stretches back to the 14th century. But he succumbs to what will be a lifelong obsession with the mysterious Max Castle, a nearly forgotten genius of the silent screen who later became the greatest director of horror films, only to vanish in the 1940s, at the height of his talent. Now, 20 years later, as Jonathan seeks the truth behind Castle's disappearance, the innocent entertainments of his youth--the sexy sirens, the screwball comedies, the high romance--take on a sinister appearance. His tortured quest takes him from Hollywood's Poverty Row into the shadowy lore of ancient religious heresies. He encounters a cast of exotic characters, including Orson Welles and John Huston, who teach him that there's more to film than meets the eye, and journeys through the dark side of nostalgia, where the Three Stooges and Shirley Temple join company with an alien god whose purposes are anything but entertainment.

As Avery makes her way through the snowy fields and across the icy lanes, towards her semi-rural English village to return to the cottage she still calls home. There’s someone in particular that Avery would love to see again. Only he’ll have to wait until she’s ready to explain, what made her return in the first place. But perhaps they could rekindle their romance for this season of goodwill, once they do catch-up, who knows. There’s just one problem with this idea, well, several actually so this year is not turning out to be the merry little Christmas Avery thought it could be. Seeing as the festivities can not only bring out the best in people but also the worst too, in this jolly humour-filled novella so reading it is a perfect way to lighten the mood on those dark days ahead.

Book excerpt: A plus-sized PI investigates the suspicious death of an actress-turned-spa-owner in this cozy mystery from the acclaimed author of Bitter Sweets. Sexy private detective Savannah Reid maybe built for comfort and not for speed, but she likes herself just fine as she is. So, the only way she’s likely to set foot in a health spa is over a dead body—someone else’s—along with a hefty fee to sweeten the deal. The irresistible combination of murder and money brings Savannah to Royal Palms to investigate the death of spa owner and former cult-flick actress Kat Valentina. The medical examiner called it a fatal—but accidental—mixture of booze and a hot tub, but Savannah's anonymous client thinks otherwise. Savanah quickly learns there's no shortage of likely suspects from ex-lovers and would-be lovers, to employees and prior co-stars with unsavory pasts. As for Savannah and her sweet tooth, this may prove to be a costly case. For if the strict regimen of exercise and nasty spa cuisine doesn't kill her, there's a murderer close by who's prepared to finish the job . . . Praise for Killer Calories “This third bouncy adventure . . . for the witty, sweet-toothed heroine is a real treat.” —Library Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is beautifully illustrated and tells the delightful story of Jesus coming to earth as the greatest gift ever given! It tells of Gods’ great love to come down and die for our sins and give us the gift of salvation and eternal life with him. It also tells us that Santa as we have come to know him is not true. Instead it says that the Santa tradition of gift giving began with the Wise Men. It gives a delightful account of how gift giving spread around the world as the good news did. This book invites all of us to become like the Wise Men of old, and to believe the stories in the Bible are true. It invites all of us to do more for the poor, and become a Santa too. It invites all to believe in the one true God and to allow Him to dwell in our hearts. There are Bible Text references which can be looked up as you read the story. This will become a cherished book for family worship time leading up to Christmas day each year.

Book Synopsis Creating Connections in Teaching and Learning by : Lindy Abawi
Download or read book Creating Connections in Teaching and Learning written by Lindy Abawi and published by IAP. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the wide range of contexts in which research into creating connections in learning and teaching may take place. Creating connections can encompass making links, crossing divides, forming relationships, building frameworks, and generating new knowledge. The cognitive, cultural, social, emotional and/or physical aspects of understanding, meaning-making, motivating, acting, researching, and evaluating are explored as constituent forms of creativity in relation to such connections. From this exploration the authors identify varied connective contexts and means which include the learner, the educator, the organisation, and the relevant community. The crossing of divides, forming learner-educator relationships, bringing together diverse groups of learners, establishing networks and partnerships among educators, and establishing links between organisations and communities are all considered as connections which can be created by and within the learning and teaching dynamic. By examining the factors which help to facilitate and/or restrict the possibilities for creating connections in educational contexts, implications for and outcomes of learning and/or teaching arise from the connections created. The final chapter of this book will explicate the realisations that have emerged for educators and researchers working to create connections. These offer suggestions for future directions and enunciate what and how connections might contribute to both educational institutions and the broader society.
