Book excerpt: Callie Gardner's debut collection Naturally it is not: a poem in four letters is a remarkable work written between the Spring Equinox of 2016 and the Spring Equinox of 2017. It is a work that moves between form, part lyric, part manifesto, part essay. Gardner's poetry here is a truly unique blend of avant-garde rhetoric, utopian politics, and elemental alchemy. A timely work that engages anew with 'the natural' and 'the cultural' in an era marked by the increasing irrelevance of the four-season cycle of the year under climate change.

Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction Baldness Stimulation of the Scalp Talking about Dyeing Main Reasons for Hair Fall Traditional Shampoos Pressure Therapy Dandruff Coconut Oil Remedy Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction No, this is not a bad hair day, I am just stressed out… It could have been a bad hair day, hair not being managed properly, flying all over your face and all over the place, tumbling down from out of a snood or even out of a French braid or piled it high up on your head and stuck the creative artistry with jeweled pins, and so on. People having long hair may suffer from this problem, and that is why in the 20s and 30s, women decided to have their head shingled and bobbed, where once upon a time in Victorian times, long hair was considered to be the mark of feminine beauty. This hair was then supported with artificial ringlets, pads, Tufts, and even women wore toupees. These additional adornments and fixtures to the hair were called “rats.” Nowadays most of us wash our hair nearly every day, depending on its length, but in Victorian times, that was done only once every eight days with a rinse made up of egg yolks beaten in warm water, and rubbed over the hair. This was then washed with lukewarm water to make the hair shiny. But what about the scalp, you may ask. They did not bother much about cleaning the scalp, as long as the hair was squeaky clean. And then when they suffered from dandruff and others scalp related diseases, they cleaned the scalp with orris root powder applied at night, and then brushed out the next morning. They also used pomades and even some unguents made up of bear grease- phew, what a pong! – But then I guess, when everybody in the vicinity is smelling of bear grease, the nose gets accustomed to it… Nevertheless, for our amusement, here is the famous Mrs. Beeton’s recipe for pomade published in 1861. Here you did not use the fat taken from a poor unfortunate brown bear – Russian for choice. I am not joking! What fools these vain mortals be. Anyway, this pomade was made by ¼ pound of lard – equally pong making to our oh so sensitive 21st century noses-, scent of choice and two Penny worths of castor oil. The lard was unsalted. It was beaten up, the castor oil was added to it during the beating process, with the help of a kitchen knife, and few drops of your preferred scent. This pomade was then put into porcelain or glass pots, and then covered well so that it did not turn rancid.

Book excerpt: Naturally occurring radionuclides are found throughout the earth's crust, and they form part of the natural background of radiation to which all humans are exposed. Many human activities-such as mining and milling of ores, extraction of petroleum products, use of groundwater for domestic purposes, and living in houses-alter the natural background of radiation either by moving naturally occurring radionuclides from inaccessible locations to locations where humans are present or by concentrating the radionuclides in the exposure environment. Such alterations of the natural environment can increase, sometimes substantially, radiation exposures of the public. Exposures of the public to naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) that result from human activities that alter the natural environment can be subjected to regulatory control, at least to some degree. The regulation of public exposures to such technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory and advisory organizations is the subject of this study by the National Research Council's Committee on the Evaluation of EPA Guidelines for Exposures to Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials.

The word hemorrhage brings with it the idea of internal bleeding, and emergency medica l situations, when you need to get a doctor fast, but actually it is the medical terminology for bleeding of any kind, both internal or external. This book is going to tell you all about different types of hemorrhages, but I am not going to give you any very complex medical remedies, except those which are in general usage for minor hemorrhages. That is because I am not a medical practitioner. Nevertheless, you can find a number of interesting bits of information in the appendix section, about how hemorrhages were cured 5000 years ago, in the Indian subcontinent, through Ayurveda. The plants and vegetables used here, along with the meat of animals and birds as well as the method of preparation is definitely interesting to read, but I really do not have the time, energy, inclination, knowledge or experience to make up any of these medicines through ancient medical procedures. The medical treatises were collected in one great compendium, and they had been taken from the knowledge gained by a large number of wandering mendicants. With my limited knowledge of Sanskrit, I could make out some medical terms, but I was astonished to know that at that time the food habits of the people living in Greece (Yavanas)– they ate meat and fish, predominantly, and Persia (Pallavas as in Reza Shah Pehlavi, the Shah of Iran – they enjoyed game, vegetables, sour foods etc., they were noted very carefully in these treatises. There were three other countries and lands noted here, but I could not make any mental association of which land they referred to.

These toxins are not harmful to the organisms themselves, but they may be toxic to other creatures, including humans, when eaten. These chemical compounds have diverse structures and differ in biological function and toxicity. Some toxins are produced by plants as a natural defense mechanism against predators, insects, or microorganisms, or as a consequence of infestation with microorganisms, such as mold, in response to climate stress (such as drought or extreme humidity). Well-known groups of natural toxins of plant origin are: cyanogenic glycosides, pyrrolizidine alkaloids, furocoumarins, lectins, and glycoalkaloids. These plant-origin natural toxins can cause a variety of adverse health effects and pose a serious health threat to both humans and livestock. Analysis of Naturally Occurring Food Toxins of Plant Origin is divided into three sections that provide a detailed overview of different classes of food toxins that are naturally found in plants, including various analytical techniques used for their structural characterization, identification, detection, and quantification. This book provides in-depth information and comprehensive discussion over quantitative and qualitative analysis of natural toxins in plant-based foods. Key Features: • Provides a detailed overview of different classes of natural toxins found in plants. • Explains how IR, NMR, and mass spectrometry are utilized in characterization and identification. • Describes applicability of HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS, and HPTLC techniques for detection and quantification. • Discusses progress in the field related to capillary electrophoresis, ELISA, and biosensors for quantitative application of these techniques. Complete with practical exercises and sample dialogues, this clear and compassionate guide will help you let go and become the natural healer you are meant to be.

Many times, you may fall prey to a disease, and then you have to go hunting for the nearest pill in order to “cure” it, but this book is going to tell you all about a large number of ailments and diseases out there, and how people have been preventing those ailments from occurring through natural remedies, down the ages. Nowadays, most of us consider ourselves very lucky because we have state-of-the-art medical technology in order to take care of our health. However, these diseases are still present, even though the medicines to take care of them are supposedly easily available to you either over the counter or prescribed by your doctor. And many times you find out that even though you have taken that medicine, you have not quite managed to throw off the symptoms of that disease or even that infection. So this book is for all those people, who find themselves suffering occasionally from a number of ailments, and wondered just how they managed to get ill. All these ailments could have been prevented with a little bit of judicial usage of spices, herbs, vegetables, fruit, and other natural easily available products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In literary theory, the philosophy of law, and the sociology of knowledge, no issue has been more central to current debate than the status of our interpretations. Do they rest on a ground of rationality or are they subjective impositions of a merely personal point of view? In Doing What Comes Naturally, Stanley Fish refuses the dilemma posed by this question and argues that while we can never separate our judgments from the contexts in which they are made, those judgments are nevertheless authoritative and even, in the only way that matters, objective. He thus rejects both the demand for an ahistorical foundation, and the conclusion that in the absence of such a foundation we reside in an indeterminate world. In a succession of provocative and wide-ranging chapters, Fish explores the implications of his position for our understanding of legal, literary, and psychoanalytic interpretation, the nature of professional and institutional culture, and the place of reason in a world that is rhetorical through and through."--Publisher description.
