Book excerpt: Although it's a piece of history learned by every British student, the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-1913 remains an epic story unknown to many. In this ultimate showing of life and boundless bravery, Robert F. Scott and his five-man team battled the elements--traveling through subzero temperatures with motor sledges and ponies--in the hope of being the first to reach this uninhabited territory. Arriving at the South Pole on January 18, 1913, the adventurers were greeted by their worst nightmare: a Norwegian flag. Disheartened and badly frostbitten, they trudged back toward their boat, only to die just eleven miles from the next depot. This well-documented journey is starkly relived in this waterproof, over-sized edition featuring a historic collection of stunning black-and-white photography on waterproof paper, and excerpts from Scott's harrowing diary uniquely crafted in calligraphy. Limited edition of 150 numbered copies

Book excerpt: The Ross Orogen of the Transantarctic Mountains is the part of the orogenic system that formed at the Pacific continental margin of present-day Antarctica. According to a recent hypothesis, this continental margin was created by the rifting and subsequent drift of Laurentia from Gondwana. With an unparalleled breadth and depth of information, this book provides a detailed synthesis of the history of the Ross orogen. In doing so, it incorporates classical studies with discussions of the most recent and controversial research from the international community. The book also includes a comprehensive bibliography and a historical chronology of all expeditions that have worked on the Ross orogen in the Transantarctic Mountains, from the first sightings by Ross in 1840 right up to the present day. This review of the Ross orogen of the Transantarctic Mountains will be valuable to all geologists interested in these episodes in the Earth's history, and to researchers of the geology of Antarctica.

Book excerpt: Part Nine in the Fishes of the Western North Atlantic series describes in two volumes 180 species in 85 genera (19 families) of eels and related gulper eels found in the western and mid-Atlantic, and the unique larvae known as leptocephali (168 species). Specialist authorships of its sections include detailed species descriptions with keys, life history and general habits, abundance, range, and relation to human activity, such as economic and sporting importance. The text is written for an audience of amateur and professional ichthyologists, sportsmen, and fishermen, based on new revisions, original research, and critical reviews of existing information. Species are illustrated by exceptional black and white line drawings, accompanied by distribution maps and tables of meristic data.

Book excerpt: The McMurdo Ice Shelf and associated faunal remains were examined in the vicinity of the easternmost Dailey Island. Stratigraphic, petrographic, and chemical composition studies of cores from 2 holes drilled through the ice shelf show that at these locations the shelf is composed only of fresh water ice. Although cores from the deeper hole possessed glacial textures throughout, much of the ice from this part of the McMurdo Ice Shelf may have been formed from the freezing of a layer of fresh water found sandwiched between the shelf bottom and the underlying sea water. The existence of fresh water under the ice shelf can most probably be attributed to drainage of surface melt water during the ablation season. There was no evidence to indicate that this part of the ice shelf is being nourished by the growth of sea ice onto its lower surface. The fish remains found on the ice surfaces were confined to a narrow zone along the tide crack and are believed to have been left in this vicinity by deep diving seals. The marine invertebrate remains on top of the ice are associated with morainal material and are believed to have been incorporated into the ice at the time of formation of the moraines. (Author).
