Book excerpt: In unconventional resources such as the Haynesville Shale, a proper understanding of natural fracture patterns is essential to enhancing the economic success of petroleum extraction. The spatial density of naturally occurring fracture sets affects drainage area and optimal drilling location(s), and the azimuth of the strike of the predominant fracture set affects the ideal orientation of wells. In the absence of data to directly determine these fracture characteristics, such as Formation Microimaging (FMI) logs, these natural fracture patterns can be analyzed by examining the seismic anisotropy present in the reservoir. Anisotropy introduced from aligned fracture sets creates predictable azimuthal variations in the seismic wavefield. This allows the reservoir anisotropy, and thus the fracturing present in the reservoir, to be studied indirectly through the azimuthal analysis of industry standard 3D seismic data. The work presented here outlines three distinct methodologies, which utilize azimuthal amplitude variations (AVAZ) present in 3D seismic data, to infer fracture characteristics without the need for substantial well log information. Two of these methods have been previously established and assume the reservoir to be characteristic of Horizontally Transverse Isotropic (HTI). The last method is novel and assumes orthorhombic anisotropy when inverting for fracture density and is able to unambiguously invert for fracture azimuth. All methodologies used in this work produced similar results, increasing confidence in the accuracy of these results through statistical repeatability. Fracture density inversion results indicate spatially varying fracture density throughout the area, with a distinct area of higher fracture density present in the Northwestern corner of the area analyzed. Spatially varying fracture density and localized pockets of fracturing is consistent with expectation from analyzing production data and FMI logs from other areas of the Haynesville. Fracture azimuth inversion results showed some variability; however, the novel method presented in this thesis indicates that the azimuth of the predominant fracture set is oriented at a compass bearing of approximately 82 degrees -- rotated slightly counterclockwise from an east-west orientation. Fracture azimuth results agree well with expectations from a regional stress analysis and from examining comparable formations with known fracture patterns in the surrounding area.

Book excerpt: The New Albany Shale is an Upper Devonian organic-rich gas shale located in the Illinois Basin. A factor influencing gas production from the shale is the natural fracture system. I test the hypothesis that a combination of outcrop and core observations, rock property tests, and geomechanical modeling can yield an accurate representation of essential natural fracture attributes that cannot be obtained from any of the methods alone. Field study shows that New Albany Shale outcrops contain barren (free of cement) joints, commonly oriented in orthogonal sets. The dominant set strikes NE-SW, with a secondary set oriented NNW-SSE. I conclude that the joints were likely created by near-surface processes, and thus are unreliable for use as analogs for fractures in the reservoir. However, the height, spacing, and abundance of the joints may still be useful as guides to the fracture stratigraphy of the New Albany Shale at depth. The Clegg Creek and Blocher members contain the highest fracture abundance. Fractures observed in four New Albany Shale cores are narrow, steeply-dipping, commonly completely sealed with calcite and are oriented ENE-WSW. The Clegg Creek and Blocher members contain the highest fracture abundance, which is consistent with outcrop observations. Fractures commonly split apart along the wall rock-cement interface, indicating they may be weak planes in the rock mass, making them susceptible to reactivation during hydraulic fracturing. Geomechanical testing of six core samples was performed to provide values of Young's modulus, subcritical index, and fracture toughness as input parameters for a fracture growth simulator. Of these inputs, subcritical index is shown to be the most influential on the spatial organization of fractures. The models predict the Camp Run and Blocher members to have the most clustered fractures, the Selmier to have more evenly-spaced fractures, and the Morgan Trail and Clegg Creek to have a mixture of even spacing and clustering. The multi-faceted approach of field study, core work, and geomechanical modeling I used to address the problem of fracture characterization in the New Albany Shale was effective. Field study in the New Albany presents an opportunity to gather a large amount of data on the characteristics and spatial organization of fractures quickly and at relatively low cost, but with questionable reliability. Core study allows accurate observation of fracture attributes, but has limited coverage. Geomechanical modeling is a good tool for analysis of fracture patterns over a larger area than core, but results are difficult to corroborate and require input from outcrop and core studies.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the Haynesville shale has become a target for natural gas exploitation, especially with the advent of horizontal drilling and hydraulicfracturing. Located in East Texas and Northwest Louisiana, it is believed to be one of the largest producing natural gas plays in the U.S., with estimated recoverable reserves of around 75 TCF according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA, 2011). Current total daily production for the entire play is around 5.4 Bcf/d. The economic potential of the Haynesville shale gas play is propelled by recent gradual rebounds in natural gas prices, increased industrial utilization of gas, and expansion of LNG export terminals along the gulf coast due to the lifting of the decades-old ban on exporting petroleum products. Consequently, it is imperative to properly evaluate the petrophysical attributes of the shale in order to understand the reservoir characteristics that may ultimately influence production. This study focused on the petrophysical evaluation of wells in East Texas and Northwest Louisiana. Wireline logs and core data were integrated to provide a predictive template for targeting and landing lateral wellbores within the shale in order to provide useful insight for hydraulic fracture stimulation with the view of optimizing production. The critical factors determined to influence the target zones include geomechanical properties such as brittleness, and geochemical properties such as the mineral volumes in the rock. These were calculated from logs using equations previously published in literature and correlated to nearby core measurements for verification. Already drilled and completed laterals were also evaluated to identify potential refracturing opportunities that could remedy production decline. The stimulation techniques and production outcomes of these laterals were examined in an attempt to identify possible trends and contrasts accordingly. The results show that the geomechanical properties vary across the shale play area. The geomechanical and geochemical properties can be useful in target selection for landing horizontal wells and effective fracture treatments, but they cannot by themselves guarantee productivity as other factors have to be taken into consideration such as completions method. The various operational constraints and development patterns such as different lateral lengths and age/style of completions make it difficult to do effective well-to-well production comparison; however the results points to trends such as longer lateral lengths with greater fracture stages to boost production. Additionally, in some areas, it has been established via the petrophysical analysis that there may be additional intervals in which to land a second horizontal well. This will surely lead to better exploitation and increased production from the reservoir.

Natural, vertical extension fractures in sandstone are open or only partly mineral filled in the cored depth range (approximately -5,000 to -10,000 ft), and they are therefore potential gas reservoirs as well as a potentially important influence on commercial hydraulic fracture treatment. Crack-seal structure in fracture-filling quartz shows that fracturing and quartz cementation were contemporary; this result, together with evidence of timing of fracturing and the large water volumes that are inferred to have passed through the Travis Peak, suggests that natural hydraulic fracturing influenced fracture development. Healed transgranular microfractures that occur in sandstone can be used to ascertain natural fracture trends in core that lacks macrofractures, and coring-induced petal-centerline fractures can be used to infer stress orientations. Fractures trend ENE to E. In the upper Travis Peak, borehole ellipticity trends ENE, parallel to fracture trends, and in the lower Travis Peak ellipticity trends NNW, parallel to the direction of least horizontal stress.

Book excerpt: Natural fractures are a critical component of reservoir development within the Devonian shale of the Appalachian Basin due to the extremely low in-situ matrix permeabilites of this reservoir. Analysis of core from two research wells had provided the basis for detailed description of natural fractures in the research area. Joints are found to be common throughout the "Transition Zone" and Lower Huron sections. Several sets (orientations) exist, with an east-west constituting the dominant set based upon greater and more consistent frequency of occurrence, and significantly greater joint height. The pressence of this east-west set and its association with other, intersecting sets may control reservoir quality. Joints are characterized by common en echelon offsets, local dip changes, and limited vertical extent, the latter of which may significantly limit verical permeability within this reservoir. Effective apertures are likely quite small, and joint spacing, while difficult to quantify, may vary between the sets from less than a foot to several feet. Borehole imaging data was acquired from the research wells, including FMS, CAST, and borehole camera data. Each of these tools is a good source of fracture data, and have their own advantages, disadvantages, and guidelines for optimal use. It is crucial that these tools be cross-correlated to whole core data.

Book excerpt: Natural fracture systems are important for production in shale gas reservoirs as they may contribute to permeability of the reservoir, or they may reactivate during hydraulic fracture treatment. However, little is known about their size scaling and spatial distribution. Bed-parallel, calcite-filled fractures are common in shale. Knowing the aperture-size scaling and spatial organization of bed-parallel fractures may contribute to improved modeling of the combined fracture network (hydraulic and natural). Ten fracture data sets were collected from the Vaca Muerta (7), Marcellus (2) and Wolfcamp (1) shale formations. Bed-parallel fracture attributes such as strike, dip, aperture size, spacing, length and texture were collected from outcrops of the Vaca Muerta Formation in the Neuquén Basin, Argentina. Further fracture aperture-size and spacing data for the Vaca Muerta, and for the Marcellus and Wolfcamp, were collected through measurement direct from cores, and from photographic panels of slabbed core. A total of 1093 fractures were measured along 10 scanlines of total combined length of 629m. The aperture size of bed-parallel fractures ranges over 4 orders of magnitude, from 15 [micrometers] to 87 mm. Nine out of ten datasets follow a negative exponential distribution. Fracture attributes such as intensity and size range are different in the 3 studied shales. Even within the same shale formation, fracture intensity and size range can be variable. Aperture size ranges of bed-parallel and vertical fractures in these shales are comparable as are fracture intensities for the Marcellus examples. Bed-parallel fractures, however, have higher intensities than vertical fractures in the Vaca Muerta examples. Spatial organization of bed-parallel fractures is investigated using a normalized two-point correlation technique that allows distinction between clustering, regular spacing and a random distribution. The relationship between fracture spatial organization and stratigraphy and mechanical interfaces within the host rock is also investigated, with preliminary results suggesting that bed-parallel fractures are more intense in organic-rich layers in some cases, but not in others.
