Download or read book Homo Natura written by Vanessa Lemm and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche coins the enigmatic term homo natura to capture his understanding of the human being as a creature of nature and tasks philosophy with the renaturalisation of humanity. Following Foucault's critique of the human sciences, Vanessa Lemm discusses the reception of Nietzsche's naturalism in philosophical anthropology, psychoanalysis and gender studies. She offers an original reading of homo natura that brings back the ancient Greek idea of nature and sexuality as creative chaos and of the philosophical life as outspoken and embodied truth, perhaps best exemplified by the Cynics' embrace of social and cultural transformation.

Book Synopsis Galen On the Natural Faculties by : Galen
Download or read book Galen On the Natural Faculties written by Galen and published by London, Heinemann. This book was released on 1916 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His writings were so numerous and his reputation so influential that he was obliged to furnish his disciples with two handbooks, still extant, On the order of my writings and On my genuine works. Though the standard edition (by C.G. Kühn, 1821-33) runs to twenty-two volumes, On the Natural Faculties is still the only medical treatise of his available in English. Galen's merit is to have crystallised or brought to focus all the best work of the Greek medical schools which had preceded his own time. It is essentially in the form of Galenism that Greek medicine was transmitted to after ages. -- JACKET.

Download or read book Natura Urbana written by Matthew Gandy and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of urban nature that draws together different strands of urban ecology as well as insights derived from feminist, posthuman, and postcolonial thought. Postindustrial transitions and changing cultures of nature have produced an unprecedented degree of fascination with urban biodiversity. The “other nature” that flourishes in marginal urban spaces, at one remove from the controlled contours of metropolitan nature, is not the poor relation of rural flora and fauna. Indeed, these islands of biodiversity underline the porosity of the distinction between urban and rural. In Natura Urbana, Matthew Gandy explores urban nature as a multilayered material and symbolic entity, through the lens of urban ecology and the parallel study of diverse cultures of nature at a global scale. Gandy examines the articulation of alternative, and in some cases, counterhegemonic, sources of knowledge about urban nature produced by artists, writers, scientists, as well as curious citizens, including voices seldom heard in environmental discourse. The book is driven by Gandy’s fascination with spontaneous forms of urban nature ranging from postindustrial wastelands brimming with life to the return of such predators as wolves and leopards on the urban fringe. Gandy develops a critical synthesis between different strands of urban ecology and considers whether "urban political ecology," broadly defined, might be imaginatively extended to take fuller account of both the historiography of the ecological sciences, and recent insights derived from feminist, posthuman, and postcolonial thought.

Book Synopsis Natura 2000 et le juge/Natura 2000 and the judge by : Charles-Hubert Born
Download or read book Natura 2000 et le juge/Natura 2000 and the judge written by Charles-Hubert Born and published by Primento. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. As part of the activities of the Legal Observatory Natura 2000, this book focuses on legal issues arising from the implementation by the national courts – constitutional, administrative and judicial ones – of the provisions relating to Natura 2000, in order to assess the contribution of the judge to the effectiveness of this regime. The enforcement of this legislation, which encompasses a complex body of technical rules, grounded on scientific concepts difficult to interpret for a non-scientist, is not easy to apply by a non-specialized judge. The use of expertise is essential to determine how a particular standard – for example the «significant» character of an impact – has been met or not. For this reason, the solutions found by the judge to the various problems arising from the application of the Natura 2000 provisions in the different Member States deserve attention and will be rewarding for both researchers and practitioners.
Book Synopsis De Naturae Natura by : Alexander Jacob
Download or read book De Naturae Natura written by Alexander Jacob and published by Arktos. This book was released on 2011 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of European natural philosophy begins with the classical conceptions of Mind, Soul, Nature and the Unconscious and analyses the revival of these notions in the natural philosophy of the Renaissance and the Seventeenth century. The concept of the Unconscious acquired a major importance in the systems of the German vitalist biologists and the Idealistic philosophers of the Nineteenth century. Jacob shows how these various thinkers, as well as the German Romantic philosophers, and especially Schubert, Carus, Schopenhauer, and Hartmann, not only revived the ancient doctrines of the Soul in their metaphysical schemes but also anticipated the psychological theories of Jung, who, as a psychologist and philosopher, serves as the culminating point of the work. In the Appendix, the author points to the natural philosophical bases of the discussions of racial differences that emerged in the Nineteenth century alongside the investigations into the spiritual capacities of mankind. Alexander Jacob obtained his Ph.D. in the History of Ideas from Pennsylvania State University and is the author of Nobilitas: A Study of Aristocratic Philosophy from Ancient Greece to the Early Twentieth Century, and Atman: A Reconstruction of the Solar Cosmology of the Indo-Europeans. His major editions of German conservative political thinkers include Edgar Julius Jung: 's The Rule of the Inferiour, the anthology Europa: German Conservative Foreign Policy 1870-1940, and Houston Stewart Chamberlain's Political Ideals.
