Book excerpt: The Hunter Region, between the Hawkesbury and Manning rivers in eastern New South Wales, hosts a rich diversity of vegetation, with many species found nowhere else. Spanning an area from the coast to the tablelands and slopes, its rainforests, wet and dry sclerophyll forests, woodlands, heathlands, grasslands and swamps are known for their beauty and ecological significance. Flora of the Hunter Region describes 54 endemic trees and large shrubs, combining art and science in a manner rarely seen in botanical identification guides. Species accounts provide information on distribution, habitat, flowering, key diagnostic features and conservation status, along with complete taxonomic descriptions. Each account includes stunning botanical illustrations produced by graduates of the University of Newcastle's Bachelor of Natural History Illustration program. The illustrations depict key diagnostic features and allow complete identification of each species. This publication will be a valuable resource for those interested in the plants of the region, including researchers, environmental consultants, horticulturalists and gardeners, bush walkers, herbaria, and others involved in land management.

Book Synopsis Native Orchids of Trinidad and Tobago by : Richard Evans Schultes
Download or read book Native Orchids of Trinidad and Tobago written by Richard Evans Schultes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native Orchids of Trinidad and Tobago provides detailed descriptions of the native species and varieties of orchids from Trinidad and Tobago. The Orchidaceae is the largest family of flowering plants with between 15,000 and 20,000 known species and varieties in from 500 to 600 genera; and new ones are being discovered by almost every botanical expedition to tropical areas. In Trinidad and Tobago, the Orchidaceae is the second largest family of flowering plants in terms of number of species. The native species and varieties known at the present time number 181, and they belong to sixty-six genera. The genera are enumerated in strict phylogenetic sequence, in accord with SCHLECHTER'S system. The species are listed alphabetically under the genera. An attempt has been made throughout to indicate synonymy as completely as possible even to the inclusion of binomials, which have never been used in connection with the flora of Trinidad and Tobago. The description of each genus has for the most part been drawn up to cover the morphological limits shown by the concept throughout its entire geographic range, whereas the specific descriptions are usually based only upon material collected in Trinidad and Tobago.
Book Synopsis Medicinal Orchids of Asia by : Eng Soon Teoh
Download or read book Medicinal Orchids of Asia written by Eng Soon Teoh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book brings together a wealth of data on the botanical, ethno-medicinal and pharmacological aspects of over 500 species of Asian medicinal orchids. It starts off by explaining the role and limitations of complimentary and herbal medicines, and how traditional Asian medicine differs from Western, “scientific” medicine. The different Asian medical traditions are described, as well as their modes of preparing herbal remedies. The core of the book presents individual medicinal orchid species arranged by genera. Each species is identified by its official botanical name, synonyms, and local names. Its distribution, habitat and flowering season, uses and pharmacology are described. An overview sums up the research findings on all species within each genus. Clinical observations are discussed whenever available, and possible therapeutic applications are highlighted. The book closes with chapters on the conservation of medicinal orchids and on the role of randomized clinical trials.
