Book excerpt: The Springfield Water Works Intake dam is an approximate 295 foot long concrete masonry structure spanning a gorge in the Little River. This dam is built on a 180 foot radius and appears to be functioning as an arch. The visual inspection of this dam did not disclose any findings that indicate an unsafe condition. The spillway for this dam is able to pass a 1/2 PMF flow from its own drainage area of 3.15 s.m. It must be noted however, that the Cobble Mountain Reservoir, some 2.75 miles upstream, could affect the flow at this site. Should the Cobble Mountain Reservoir be full and overflowing its spillway at a time of flooding conditions, the flow at this site would change significantly. It is recommended that the owner have repairs made to certain spalled areas of the intake structure and wasteway.

Book excerpt: The dam is a sluiced earth fill between massive rock toe embankments. The top of dam is about 730 feet long about 250 above the valley bottom at the toe. The dam is generally in GOOD condition, well maintained, with no excessive or dangerous leakage. The preliminary hydrologic and hydraulic analysis for this LARGE size, HIGH hazard dam indicated that the spillway is adequate. The test field is the PMF and for the tributary drainage area of 45.8 square miles of mountainous terrain which is more than 80% forested, the unit discharge rate is 1440 CFS/square miles. (Author).

Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam is generally comprised of a 401-foot long, 10 to 28 foot high main spillway, a head gate building, an overflow canal spillway and a canal leading to two 8 foot diameter penstocks used in electrical power generation. There are two inoperable gates located in the main dam. The dam is normally operated with two feet of flashboards above the spillway crest. The visual inspection did not disclose any findings that indicate an immediate unsafe condition. The 1 /2 PMF test flood used will produce an inflow/outflow of 70,830 cfs. The dam is a run-of-the-river type and the spillway crest would be overtopped by about 14 feet. The spillway has a capacity of 29,500 cfs (42 percent of 1/2 PMF outlfow) at elevation 166.6, top of non-overflow section. The non-overflow section is overtopped by about six feet. This flow would not overtop the upstream training walls which are at elevation 174.0. The overall condition of the dam is considered fair due to the lack of adequate draw down capacity. Remedial measures consist of removing vegetation from the downstream face of the dam, further observation of seepage at the right abutment, repair the wooden crest cover, and develop a formal warning system to warn downstream areas in case of an emergency.

Book excerpt: The dam is comprised of an earth embankment, a central principal spillway, and and emergency spillway. The embankment has a maximum fill height of approximately 31 feet and a crest length of 170 feet. The principal spillway consists of a concrete intake riser structure, an impact basin, and a 30 inch diameter reinforced concrete connector pipe. The visual inspection indicated the dam to be in generally good condition. The test flood (1/2 PMF) will produce an inflow of 1620 cfs. The resulting outflow through the spillway is 1120 cfs at elevation 1189, a surcharge of 5.5 feet. The spillway has a capacity of 1920 cfs at elevation 1191, top of the dam. The dam is in generally good condition. It is felt, however, that certain items need attention. These include extension of riprap protection along the dike forming the left training wall of the emergency spillway and refastening of two trash angles on the intake riser.

Book excerpt: Chicopee Reservoir Dam is a 545-foot long, 47-foot high earth embankment dam constructed circa 1926. The spillway is a 44-foot long ogee crest which si located at the right abutment of the dam and has a crest elevation (El) 168.0. The outlet conduits are a 24-inch cast-iron former water supply line and a 30-inch cast-iron blowoff. The following deficiencies were observed at the site: high degree of erosion of the principal spillway chute structure and outlet training walls; erosion gullies on the right abutment above the dam crest; brush growth on the downstream slope of the embankment; and seepage from the left abutment downstream of the dam. Generally, the dam is in fiar condition. The adopted spillway Test Flood is equal to the Probable Maximum Flood which yields a peak test flood inflow of 7565 cfs. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the spillway, without flashboards, with the water surface at the top of the dam can discharge 3,950 cfs which is less than the total routed test flood outflow of 6,450 cfs. Thus, the spillway can discharge 60% of the routed test flood outflow.

Book excerpt: The Ware Industries Man (Upper) Dam consists of a main spillway 115 ft. long and approximately 34 ft. high, a spillway extension 50 ft. long and 4 ft. high, a concrete emergency spillway, a gate house with control works to a canal, and a 115 ft. long overflow weir from the canal. Based on a visual examination of the structure, the project is in good to fair condition. There was no evidence of structural failure or other conditions which would warrant urgent remedial action. The PMF outflow of 109,200 cfs would overtop the dam by 11.25 ft. With the water level at the top of dam, the spillway system can pass 7980 cfs which is 7.3 percent of the test flood.

Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dam generally consists of a 190 foot masonry spillway, an earthfill embankment and 2 outlet pipes. The dam was designed in 1955 by Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation to replace an earlier dam, which was damaged by the flood of that year. Construction which utilized portions of the original structure was completed in 1957. The visual inspection showed the dam to be in good condition. However, water passing over the spillway limited the inspection of the spillway. The spillway is capable of passing 96% of the test flood outflow. The top of the embankment, elevation 175, would be overtopped by about 1 foot. However, failure under this condition would only cause insignificant damage as the downstream flooding would have already occurred. The dam is generally in good condition. However, it is recommended that the owner repair the drawdown outlet, and operate it at least once yearly to insure continued adequacy. After this outlet is repaired, or during a period of low flow, the owner should engage a qualified engineer to inspect the spillway without water flowing over it. Also the erosion of a retaining wall downstream of the spillway on the right abutment side should be repaired.

Book excerpt: This dam is a 940 foot long earth embankment dam with a concrete spillway. It is recommended that the areas of erosion both on the upstream and downstream faces where the abutments and embankment interface be repaired. Surface water in these areas should be redirected to prevent future erosion. The riprap on the upstream face should be extended to the dam's crest. The water exiting from the toe and core wall drains should be directed to a control channel and weir where the flow can be periodically measured. The 20-in capped pipe running beneath the dam to the downstream toe should be uncapped and extended to the lower reservoir. This will prevent the potential of a pressurized pipe (should the outlet gate be left open) from bursting and undermining the dam. Although the spillway can not discharge the test flood without overtopping the dam, the spillway capacity is comparatively large. Because of the hydrologic and safety relationships between this dam and the lower reservoir, it is necessary that future hydrologic studies concerning spillway capacities at either project should simultaneously encompass studies for both projects.

Book excerpt: The dams are in fair condition, due to the potential overtopping of the dams during the occurrence of the test flood and the reported overtopping of the dams during prior floods. There is some eroding of concrete joints in the dam, deteriorated concrete on appurtenant structures and observed seepage both from the joints in the concrete and from the embankments. The east dike is heavily overgrown with brush and young trees. Hydraulic analysis indicates that the test flood stage would be at elevation 240.3 which is approximately 4.3 feet above the top of the right embankment. Approximately 95 percent of the test flood would pass over the 60 foot dam, 29 foot dam and the small dam spillways. The remaining flow would be over the right embankment between the screen house and the mill building.

Book excerpt: Kendall Company No. 1 Dam is a run of river facility that diverts water into a flume leading to the company's plant. Within the river channel there is a rock-filled, timber crib spillway structure 238 feet long. This overflow structure has a topwidth of 5 feet, and it has 2.9-foot high flashboards on its crest. The height of the dam, measured at the abutments of the spillway overflow section, is 24 feet. Based on visual inspection, the dam is judged to be in poor condition. The major concerns with respect to the integrity of the dam are deterioration of the wood crib abutment structure at the right end of the overflow section; trees growing in the wood crib abutment structure, on the upstream and downstream sides of the right abutment and on the dike; hazards resulting from the existing breach in the dike; lack of adequate erosion protection on the bank of the downstream channel near the left abutment; trees growing on the strip of ground between the dry stone masonry wall, on the left side of the downstream channel, and the right side of the concrete-lined flume on the left side of the valley; and lack of a low-level outlet for the dam. The spillway capacities are, respectively, about 22 percent and 38 percent of the routed test flood outflows. The depths of overtopping of the dam and dike that would occur during the test flood are 4.2 feet with the flashboards in place, and 3.5 feet with the flashboards removed.

Book excerpt: The South Barre Mill Pond dam is a small dam consisting of two adjacent concrete ogee spillways, a short earth embankment on the right side and an outlet works to a penstock at the left abutment. The present dam, constructed about 1904, was extensively damaged in the floods of 1936 and 1938 and has been reconstructed on several occasions, the latest work in 1944. The dam is in fair to good condition. There are no obvious signs of failure or conditions which would warrant urgent remedial treatment. Hydraulic analyses indicate that the spillway will not pass one-half the probable maximum flood and the spillway is considered inadequate, Recommendations for remedial work include repair of concrete at the left training wall and right spillway weir and restoration of gates to good operating condition. Additional investigation of the right spillway weir is recommended, since no data are available concerning this portion of the structure.

Book excerpt: The dam is a stone masonry gravity dam having a hydraulic height of 26 ft., 100 ft. long, 9 ft. wide at the crest, and a vertical downstream face. The dam is in poor condition and it appears that maintenance of the structure has been neglected. It is small in size with a hazard potential of high. Assuming that the flood plain of the Deerfield River is not already inundated, a major breach of the dam would cause flooding of 2 to 3 feet in the area near the downstream elementary school.

Book excerpt: Congamond Lakes North Dike impounds North Pond which is one of the three ponds which make up the Congamond Lakes. All of the three ponds, North Pond, South Pond and Middle Pond are interconnected by culverts or bridges. Together the three ponds are approximately three miles long and up to one-third mile wide with a total surface area of about 465 acres. The North Dike was constructed to replace an earlier dike (which plugged an old canal) and which failed in 1955. The North Dike is approximately 80 feet long with a maximum height of 29 feet. The present condition of the dike is fair. There is no spillway nor regulating gates at North Dike. The present outlet for the lakes is at Middle Pond where Berkshire Avenue crosses Great Brook about 2 miles to the south of North Dike. During annual floods, the direction of flow in Great Brook reverses itself and flows back towards Congamond Lakes. The outlet structure at Berkshire Avenue has stoplogs which are inserted to prevent Great Brook from flooding back into the lakes. While the stoplogs are in place, Congamond Lakes has no outlet. After the flood stage of Great Brook recedes, the stoplogs are removed and Congamond Lakes are allowed to drain. The PMF inflow into Congamond Lakes, assuming that the stoplogs are in place at Berkshire Avenue would cause the lake level to rise to approximate elevation 232 MSL which is about 2 feet below the top of the dike.
