Book excerpt: The Lakeside Dam is an earthen embankment about 428 feet long and 14.1 feet high. The dam is owned and maintained by the DANAC Real Estate Investment Corporation and the Metropolitan Federal Service Corporation. The dam is classified as a small dam with a significant hazard classification. The spillway is a riprap lined earthen side channel spillway located at the right abutment. This reservoir is used for recreation. Based on criteria established by the department of the Army, Office of the Chief of Engineers (OCE), the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) is the 100 Year Flood. The spillway will satisfactorily pass the 100 Year Flood and will also pass 100 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam. Therefore the spillway is adjudged as adequate. The visual inspection revealed no problems or remedial measures in need of immediate attention. There is no regular maintenance operation program or warning system, and it is recommended that a maintenance program and a warning system be established. The maintenance items listed in Section 7.2 should be accomplished as a part of the regular maintenance program within the next 12 months. (Author).

Phase I Inspection Report written by Michael Baker (III.) and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of a Phase I investigaton is to identify expeditiously those dams which may pose hazards to human life or property. The assessment of the general conditions of the dam is based upon available data and visual inspections. Detailed investigation and analyses involving topographic mapping, subsurface investigatons, testing, and detailed computational evaluations are beyond the scope of a Phase I investigation; however, the investigation is intended to identify any need for such studies. Based upon the field conditions at the time of the field inspection and all available engineering data, the Phase I report addresses the hydraulic, hydrologic, geologic, geotechnic, and structural aspects of the dam. The engineering techniques employed give a reasonably accurate assessment of the conditions of the dam. It should be realized that certain engineering aspects cannot be fully analyzed during a Phase I inspection. Assessment and remedial measures in the report include the requirements of additional indepth study when necessary. Phase I reports include project information of the dam and appurtenances, all existing engineering data, operational procedures, hydraulic/hydrologic data of the watershed, dam stability, visual inspection report and an assessment including required remedial measures.

Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wheatlands Dam is an earthfill structure approximately 680 feet long and 71 feet high. The dam is owned by Mr. J.L. Bowman and F.L. Glaize of Stevens City, Virginia. The dam is classified as an intermediate size dam with a significant hazard classification. The principal spillway is a 72-inch corrugated metal pipe (CMP) serving as a drop-inlet that passes into a 60-inch CMP that passes through the dam at low level. The emergency spillway is an open channel earthen cut left of the left abutment. The reservoir was designed to provide recreation. Based on criteria established by the Department of the Army, Office of the Chief of Engineers (OCE), the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) is the PMF. The spillways will pass 100 percent of the PMF or 100 percent of the SDF without overtopping the crest of the dam with normal pool established at the present condition. The spillways are adjudged as adequate. In 1978, the 72-inch CMP drop-inlet was damaged during an ice thaw draining the lake to its present lake level. A portion of the upstream slope eroded as part of that failure. The visual inspection revealed no problems that required immediate remedial measures. However, a professional engineering consultant should be retained to inspect the 60-inch CMP spillway.

The Phase I Inspection and Report are limited to a review of available data, a visual inspection of the dam site and basic calculations to determine the hydraulic adequacy of the spillway. The purpose is to determine if the dam constitutes a hazard to human life and property.

Book excerpt: Based on criteria established by the Department of the Army, Office of the Chief of Engineers (OCE), the appropriate Spillway Design Flood (SDF) is the 1/2 PMF. The spillway will pass 15 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) or 30 percent of the SDF without overtopping the dam. During the SDF, the dam will be overtopped by a maximum of .4 ft for a period of 4 hours at a maximum velocity of 2.7 fps. Flows overtopping the dam during the SDF are not considered detrimental to the embankment with respect to erosion. The spillway is judged inadequate, but not seriously inadequate. The visual inspection revealed no apparent problems, however, two saturated areas encountered on the downstream embankment slope above the toe are concern. An evaluation of the stability condition could not be made since there is insufficient design and construction data for this structure.
